A Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) for measurement of water vapour in the atmosphere of Mars  emits light pulses at the “on” and “off” wavelengths shown in Figure 1. The recorded backscatter signals are  shown in Figure 2. Use the signals to determine the average water vapour number density (molecules/m3 ) in the height range  between 2.0 km and 2.5 km.  The recorded signals at these heights are as follows:  Non(2.0km) = 0.6 kHz ; Noff(2.0km) = 1.5 kHz Non(2.5km) = 0.27 kHz ; Noff(2.5km) = 0.96 kHz

Question

A Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) for measurement of water vapour in the atmosphere of Mars
emits light pulses at the “on” and “off” wavelengths shown in Figure 1. The recorded backscatter signals are
shown in Figure 2.

Use the signals to determine the average water vapour number density (molecules/m3
) in the height range
between 2.0 km and 2.5 km.
The recorded signals at these heights are as follows:
Non(2.0km) = 0.6 kHz ; Noff(2.0km) = 1.5 kHz
Non(2.5km) = 0.27 kHz ; Noff(2.5km) = 0.96 kHz
