Almost every number has a dimension associated with it-length, time, speed, etc. Some
numbers, like the coefficient of friction, are dimensionless. When reporting numbers it is crucial
to also report its dimension, or unit. In this way, there is no confusion over what the number
represents.
There are two major systems of units that are used in the world today: SI Units (Système
international d'unités), and the English System. SI Units, or the International System of Units, is
the standard in almost every country in the world. These units are also referred to as the "Metric
System." The English System is used mainly in the United States, but eventually the U.S. will
adopt SI Units, which are already widely employed. SI Units are usually much easier to work
with than the English System. SI Units are more organized, and they are based on the decimal
system. A typical example of the superiority of SI Units over the English System is in measuring
and converting lengths.
In the English System, we need fractions to express length, such as: 3 ft 4 13 in would simply
be 1.0366 m or 103.66 cm. Notice that with SI Units we simply move the decimal point when

converting within the system. English Units are not like this: 1 ft =12 in .
Objective:
Get acquainted with equivalent quantities in different unit systems. Practice length, area,
volume, temperature, and compound conversions.
Procedure:
Perform the indicated calculations and answer the following questions. Problems 1-3 just need
to be looked up. The rest of the problems need to be calculated using the methods given in class.
