SUPERVISED BY: Hospital administrator.
SUMMARY:
Carries or-assists patients into and out of vehicle, using a stretcher. Transports sick or
injured by ambulance and renders first aid. Cleans ambulance and performs minor
repairs on same.
DUTIES:
1. Transports sick or injured persons by motor vehicle of up to 1-1/2 ton rated capacity.
2. Carries or assists patients into and out of vehicle, in a manner to minimize the
aggravation of their condition, with or without use of a stretcher. Improvises
stretchers when necessary and may administer first aid.
3. Drives ambulance rapidly during emergency, terrain permitting, and possibly through
congested areas.
4. Keeps vehicle in a clean and orderly condition and makes minor repairs and
adjustments. Checks oil pressure and level, gasoline, water in battery and
radiator, and tire pressure to insure that these conditions are satisfactory for
immediate and continued use of the vehicle.
5. Prepares reports indicating departments and arrivals on calls. Makes trips for the
delivery of packages and mail.
6. Replaces dirty linen after each trip and dresses stretchers.
EDUCATION:
High school education is preferred. Courses in first aid and automobile mechanics are
desirable.
TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
One year of experience driving an automobile. Should know how to make minor repairs to
an automobile and be familiar with traffic regulations and location of city streets. Worker
receives on-the-job training in methods and procedures.
INITIATIVE & INGENUITY:
Tact and sympathy in dealing with a variety of types of patients. Considerable initiative
and judgment involved in moving patients, administering first aid, and driving vehicle
rapidly through crowded streets. Works under general supervision performing tasks that
are usually routine, but may require occasional independent decisions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Lifts and carries patients. Eye, hand, and foot coordination; color vision; depth perception
to drive vehicle. Stoops and pulls stretcher.
EQUIPMENT:

2-1/2 ton rated capacity.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
