Introduction
They Called Us Enemy is a graphic memoir of the life of George Takei, framed by his family’s detainment in Japanese internment camps during his childhood. Before he was a regular on the television show Star Trek (1966–1969), Takei and his family were ripped from their home as suspicion of Japanese Americans increased after the bombing of Pearl Harbor (1941) during World War II. They Called Us Enemy explores not only the horrible conditions and unlawful obstacles the family endured but the conflicting ideals of American democracy compared to the actions of humans who make decisions about it.
