Chapters 7-9 Summary

Lauren continues developing her new religion throughout 2025. Inspired by plants’ ability to survive after traveling long distances, she names the religion Earthseed. She grows confident that Earthseed’s followers will “take root among the stars” and thrive on other planets after life becomes impossible on Earth. Her own future is uncertain—she only knows she doesn’t want to stay in Robledo.

Lauren’s 13-year-old brother, Keith Olamina, begins spending time in the chaotic city outside Robledo, stealing expensive clothing and money. Lauren and her father are furious at Keith for compromising the family’s security.

Chapters 7-9 Analysis

The linguistic choice of the name Earthseed shows that Lauren’s belief system is intricately connected to nature. Seeds’ resilience in disaster and their ability to thrive far away from their origin make Lauren hope that humans can adopt these same traits. Parable of the Sower imagines human transitions on a generational scale—descendants will settle other planets and move out of their ancestors’ shadows. And seeds, like humans, are agents of change that can alter their landscape.

This comparison helps Lauren think through her own future as she wonders where to put down roots and grow. She’s torn between her obligations to care for her family and her own need to gamble on a better future.
