Progress Report 3

Summary

Charlie is reassured by Professor Nemur and Dr Strauss that he might still be used for their experiment. They praise him as Miss Kinnian’s best pupil and Charlie admits that he really wishes to learn and be educated, even more than those who are smarter than he is.

Charlie admits to being forgetful and yet ambitious enough to apply to a special needs school. He remembers his mother urging him to learn, very much like Miss Kinnian does.

The doctors need permission from Charlie’s family to perform surgery on his brain, since this is the first time it will be attempted on a human being. However, they are unable to locate any of his family members and he also does not remember where they used to live. Charlie does remember having a little sister named Norma though.

Charlie finds writing daily diary entries a tiring task which makes him lax at work. He wants to impress his coworker Gimpy with his newfound intelligence, if his surgery is successful.

Analysis

Charlie continues to be deeply observant. His style is simplistic, like a young child writing a diary, but his observations are keen. He also has a resilient desire to be intelligent and is willing to overcome any challenges to be put through the experiment.

This is the first time he mentions his family but tragically has no idea of their whereabouts.
