Andrew Jackson Downing (1815–1852)

Downing, Andrew Jackson. An American landscape-gardener; born in Newburg, NY, Oct. 20, 1815; drowned near Yonkers, NY, July 28, 1852. His ‘Landscape Gardening and Rural Architecture’ (1841); ‘Cottage Residences’ (1842); ‘Fruits and Fruit Trees of America’ (1845), were long considered authorities on the subjects of which they treat.
