Tipping Experiences
Tips are generally a small amount of money given to a person as gratitude for a service that has been provided. There are many times throughout our everyday lives in which we are put in a position to leave a gratuity. Whether it be dining at a restaurant, getting your hair cut at the salon, or having a few drinks with friends at a bar. In each case there was a service provided to you, now you have a decision to make, how much of a tip is considered acceptable and should you tip everyone that provides a service to you? There are many guidelines for consumers to follow. With modern technology there are convenient tip calculators available as features on most new cellular phones. When deciding on the tip amount the

“Tips are accepted not expected” not always the case. In certain restaurants management will automatically generate a 18% gratuity when there are larger parties being served. In a recent article on the 1010 wins.com website ( “tip dispute leads to arrests at soprano’s“ )the reporter tells of a story where people actually got arrested because they refused to pay the mandatory 18% tip. At some point consumers should have the right to draw the line when it comes to tipping. Michael Lewis says “ our natural and admirable reluctance to enter into the spirit of the thing causes the thing to lose whatever value it had in the first place”(23). Tip amounts should not be mandated by the size of the party. A gratuity should remain based upon the quality of the service that was provided.
Many people have lasting relationships with their salon technicians and other professionals such as a favorite restaurant’s staff, and the mechanic. For example when getting your hair cut or a manicure you tend to stay loyal to one technician due to the fact that he or she does a wonderful job. Tips for these people should be consistent and most importantly appropriate. If someone does an amazing job for you every time you visit then they are deserving of a good tip. The holidays are a good time to be generous with the people who served you satisfactorily all through the year.
In conclusion , tips have
In the essay “Tipping is an Abomination,” Brian Palmer believes tipping should be abolished in restaurants and different workforce. Palmer defines tipping as giving an amount for a worker who did a good service to a customer. Tipping started in the nineteen centuries in Europe where tipping was accepted in restaurants for labour costs. Palmer indicates tipping as a bad custom such as tipping doesn’t show demanding work, having different tip sizes, stereotyping ethnic groups, tipping doesn’t pay for a living wage, and sharing tips with co-workers. Tipping illustrates a bad custom because workers don’t receive the same amount as their co-workers and receive racism from customers. When giving out tips workers and customers in a restaurant should
In his New York Times article titled The Capitalist; The Case Against Tipping, Michel Lewis wonders whether tipping really serves any significant purpose. In his own words, "no lawful behavior in the marketplace is as disturbing to me as the growing appeals for gratuities." Lewis is convinced that people should not be rewarded for doing something they are paid to do in the first place.
Malcolm Gladwell, tends to follow trends and he tries to discover why some things tend to tip and others don’t. His curiosity about some things “tipping” caught my attention, but I was confused by the way he started the introduction. He begins with a recent fashion trend that seemed to come from nowhere, the Hush Puppies. He tells us that Hush Puppies fell in popularity and once they started appearing in the New York City nightclubs, designers started selling them again. What I disliked was how he started with the shoes because to mean it seemed like it came from nowhere and it was slightly irrelevant. However, when I was putting down the book, I noticed the title of chapter one and it’s The Three Rules of Epidemics and now I think this example
My dad is a groomer and I am his grooming assistant. I get paid in tips. When we were working at Lobos Doggie Day Care. I had a tip jar that no one is supposed to touch unless they are putting a money in there. The tip jar is like my wallet. Even if you accidentally drop money in the tip jar it ways mine. If I was not up there to collect my tip and the client paid in cash that they I felt as though they pocketed my tip. There was this one time a lady was bragging about the way she tipped. I had to leave, and guess what I never received the tip. She paid cash.
Finally the reason is should be raised is because of the amount of work a waiter has to do every time they work. Knowing from personal experience it can be a hassle waiting on people with bring their drinks and making sure that they are satisfied with what they order, and yes that is what waiters are supposed to do but it is a hassle when you have to deal with people who are rude and impatient.
The customer typically decides how much tipped workers will receive since customer take on the role of the manager while the tipped worker is the employee. The amount of the tip is contingent upon the quality of
While working as waiter at a restaurant, you should always welcome your customers with a cordial greeting.
From about 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, many customers come in for lunch and from 5:30 PM to about 8:00 PM, there is a dinner rush. During these periods, servers receive many tips due to the large volume of customers. But during the period between the lunch and dinner rushes and the period after the dinner rush, generally, restaurants receive a lot fewer customers, which is something I can attest to having worked in a restaurant this past summer. During these down periods, servers are not acquiring many tips, which means they do not have much to supplement their hourly wage.
I imagine that there are five fundamental intentions in tipping. A few people tip to flaunt. A few people tip to help the server, to supplement their pay and make them upbeat. A few people tip to get future administration. And afterward other individuals tip to stay away from dissatisfaction: You don't need the server to consider seriously you. What's more, a few people tip out of a feeling of
As a recent employee in the restaurant industry, first as a hostess and later as a waitress, I have had the opportunity to experience the system of tipping not just from a customer’s point of view.
The tipping system is to give the reason to a boss of a restaurant that he could pay lower wages;consequently, customers need to pay for the rest of the labor values. For customers, they have to pay the service due to the rule. It gives the boss a more reasonable excuse to pay lower wages to waiters;in fact, some restaurants even pay $0 wage to the waiters, which seems the restaurant only provides food, and waiters provide service.
My son and I were one of your customers today -- and after doing some research about tipping, I believe uber's website information is misleading -- and my fare does not include your tip. Therefore, I would like to somehow get my tip to you. I felt that you were an excellent driver -- and I appreciated your service.
Tipping your waiter almost feels like something that has just always been around in your dining experience inside America. You go with family and friends to your favorite restaurant, your waiter greets you, you order your meal, enjoy it, pay, and leave a tip. However, tipping is an Europe custom we borrowed. Weirdly enough, tipping use to be viewed as rude and disrespectful, much unlike today where it is viewed as disrespectful not to leave a tip. According to Michael Lynn, a professor at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, “tipping in the United States began just after the American Civil War in the late 1800’s.” Lynn suggests that wealthy Americans traveling abroad to Europe witnessed tipping and brought the aristocratic custom back with them to “show off,” or prove their elevated education and class. When you go dine in at your favorite restaurant and finish your delicious meal, how much do you tip? 10%? 20%? Nothing at all? Do you know how much to tip, or even why you should leave a tip? Tipping waiters is not a bonus; it is part of their salary. When you tip, you are helping waiters to achieve minimum wage. Consumers must pay for these costs one way or another. Tipping in America should be required.
They expect me to be patient, clear with orders, not demanding, and aware of what is going on. I must know what food they just told me was done and where to take it, but first I need to pay attention to hear when my name is called. There is usually more tension between the kitchen and waiters than there is with any other workers. The roles are so different. The kitchen staff usually looks at servers as just wanting to get a good tip, and that we do not care the extremities the kitchen has to go to for us. It is important that servers respect the kitchen staff; they are in charge of the food we will be serving. “Servers, as mediators, need their food when their customers demand it: sometimes this is before the food is ready; at other times after. If servers demand food too early, cooks are stressed; but if they don’t pick up the food on time, the food is poor and the cook seems incompetent.” (Fine 105). This is the most true on Friday and Saturday nights. Everything seems to be more chaotic on these nights, since most people decide to go out. This is good because it brings in more business for the restaurant, but then there are always more unhappy customers on these nights as well. Overall, positive interaction with the kitchen staff can make amazing things happen.
If I were the owner of the restaurant, to impose service charge from the customer does not include only a cost of serving foods and drinks to customers but also include other services, for example, cooking, venue, atmosphere of the restaurant, and others materials. Obviously, it contains many factors which the owner said that just only a price of food is not enough for
