Steve Job’s Leadership Style. Leadership style is a leader's style of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people. There are many different leadership styles such as leaders in the political, business or other fields. Steve Jobs (24th February, 1955 – 5th October, 2011) is one of the most remarkable leadership people in modern history and he is well-known as the co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Apple Inc (Misa, 2011, p. 919). In the flawed response to the Los Angeles riots there were many factors that played a role. One of the biggest is the leadership of the Los Angeles Police Department, particularly the style of leadership that was used during the situation. The style of leadership used by Chief Gates tended to lean on the more authoritative style, as well as a laissez-faire style of leadership in which it appears that “they do not get involved in operational matters. They hope the matter will go away or disappear in some fashion as they choose to ignore any real problem that may exist.” (Sickles, 2015) The best style of leadership that Chief Gates could have used in this situation is a combination of the ambassador, advocate, and should have utilized his experienced guides within the department to help sort out the response to the riots. (Galford & Maruca, 2006) These styles would allow for the chief to rely on his management staff that has the experience in dealing with riots, as well as develop the best plans to deal with the situation at hand both racially and the physical aspect of the riots.
Steve jobs demonstrated to the world just how fundamental technology is in our developing environment. He exemplified a successful and innovative leader, especially in the face of failure. One could argue that although Steve Jobs was an extremely influential businessman of his time, he had numerous tragic flaws. Egotistic is a word that describes this illustrious worker. Credit for ideas were never given to the instrumental “behind the scenes” intellectuals, and without the them, he may never have been so successful. When an individual adheres to the standards and regulation that are set by society, they are considered a conformist in its purest form. On the opposite side of the spectrum, those who do not follow these specific guidelines set by society are labeled as nonconformists. In essence, a nonconformist is an individual who goes beyond the principles of others, at the same time, is able to enhance the well-being and creativeness of other individuals. Steve Jobs, mastermind of Apple Inc., is a nonconformist of the 21st century. Jobs’ ultimate goal during his time with Apple was to inspire the creativeness others through the use of Apple’s technology. Before Jobs founded Apple Inc. in 1976, computers were nowhere to be found in homes, instead, computers were mostly found only in labs or in certain work offices. As someone who changed the computer industry and made the personal user experience possible, Jobs proved time and time again to be a nonconformist at heart by forgoing the standards of technology.
There are many models of leadership that exist across a range of fields (e.g. social work, education, psychology, business, etc.). The ability to transform an organization successfully requires a different set of attitudes and skills. Transformational leadership is an approach where a leader utilizes inspiration, charisma, individualized attention, and intellectual stimulation with their employees (Iachini, Cross, & Freedman, 2015, p. 651). Transformational leadership helps to clarify organizational vision, inspires employees to attain objectives, empowers employees, encourages employees to take risks, and advocates the seeking of alternative solutions to challenges in the workplace (Transformational Leadership, 2015). It allows the leader to engage and motivate each follower identify with the organization’s values and goals.

From its inception in 1976, Apple was run by Jobs with an iron first. He was infamous for being consumed with his sense of importance and brilliance to the point where he unfalteringly damaged others by exploiting and bullying them. He was rightly accused of being egoistic, controlling, manipulative, condescending and impassive. He was often guilty of humiliating subordinates publicly, planning coups against colleagues and overriding other’s opinions and suggestions. His weaknesses lead to his ouster form Apple in 1985. At just 30 years old, he was jobless, branded a public failure and on the verge of depression.
Jobs was definitely passionate about leading, but his true passion was creating. He personally got involved with the best and brightest of Apple. He wanted to know how his product worked. He spent time that he did not have exchanging ideas and opinions with the engineers, concerning everything from the inner paneling of the Apple products to the whether or not the iPad should have round or sharp edges. Ken Segall, longtime Apple employee, claimed in his book Think Simple that when it came to Jobs, “[He] felt [he] had the attention of a CEO who was eager to share ideas and opinions, and one who was also capable of being swayed by someone else’s passionate argument.” One admirable thing about Steve Jobs is that he praised a brilliant idea even if it trumped his own. Being in the position of power he was in and the type of assertive, over-bearing person that he was, it was easy for him to shut down ideas that opposed his own. But that is what made him so great; he was not afraid to be wrong. All he wanted was a perfect product.
