Zachariah

The play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, takes place in the town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. This time in Salem, witchcraft was suspected of almost everyone in the town. Preserving one’s reputation becomes recurring concept throughout the play. The witchcraft accusations are usually made by people that have a biased view against others, which is why everyone tries to make sure their reputation looks well with the rest of the town. This concept is proven through the characters of John Proctor, Reverend Parris and Reverend Hale. These three characters go to great lengths to protect what the town of Salem thinks of them.

Randy Pausch. Who is he? What does he stand for? The day he gave the last lecture... His last lecture he only had months to live. He packed a lot of lessons into his lecture. The claims he gave that stood out were to be optimistic, to be determined, and to take risks.

The witch trials in this play were based on actual events that happened in Salem in 1692. Arthur Miller’s 1953 The Crucible is a dramatization of the Salem Witch Trials. His reasoning for writing it was because everyone was hysteric about the Soviet Union and communism trying to make its way over to the United States. It was like a modern day witch hunt. In the play, Abigail Williams and a group of girls get caught in the woods. They were dancing and doing other things that puritan’s looked down upon. The girls were caught by Reverend Parris, and soon after his daughter became ‘ill’. The girls then started saying that witches came to them and told them to do bad things. Pride can become something that will lead a man to shame and destruction. In The Crucible this happened to one of the main characters, John Proctor, which also is the one of the Tragic Hero in the book. The Crucible is about when some town people in Salem was accused of being witches after four girls were found dancing in the woods. After 200 people were accused of being witches in 1963, 20 people were either hung or crushed by many stones. In the Crucible John Proctor, the tragic hero had a weakness as pride eventually forcing him to face a serious decision and suffering more than he should.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, it takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during colonial America. Throughout the story a group of girls makes accusations a mass of people of practicing witchcraft, one of the worst crimes to commit during that period, and people are being sentenced to hang for denying witchery. In the Crucible there are many lessons that Arthur Miller wants to teach you. To me a lot of the lessons that were taught in this story are important but I feel like one of them is the most important. Arthur Miller demonstrates that one of the lessons implied in the story is people’s character and how it affects those people and others. Examples of character are Giles Corey, John Proctor, Abigail Williams.

Zachariah wants Charlotte to be friends with Charlotte but she tells him earlier, “I don’t need a friend.” Charlotte doesn’t want to be friends with Zachariah because he is part of the crew and she only desires to be friends with someone of the same class. The theme occurred, on page 112, Charlotte says, “I’ve come,” I managed to say, “to be one of the crew.” Charlotte didn’t trust the crew because they were lower class and she was taught to be companions with people of the same class. Once she told the captain of the round robin and the pistol, and he killed Mr. Cranick and Zachariah, she realized he wasn’t who she thought he was.

In True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle Avi talks about how Zachariah is a low rank and slowly becomes a higher rank though the novel. In these paragraphs it will be telling people reading this about the novel True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle and how Zachariah is a marvelous person. First Zachariah gave a dagger to Charlotte to protect herself. Next he also tried to be Charlotte’s friend. In conclusion Zachariah took a punishment for the crew by being whipped. Zachariah is a great person for his actions.

The Crucible is set in the seventeenth- century Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem witch trial. It starts of with Reverend Parris, a man very concerned about his reputation, accusing his orphaned niece Abigail Williams of taking part in witchcraft after his daughter is unconscious after dancing in the woods. A technique used by Parris is characterization, which utilizes the thoughts, actions and dialogues in the construction of characters. Arthur Miller uses characterization to build the character of Reverend Samuel Parris as arrogant , selfish, and deceptive.

All our personalities compare to a character from Lord of the Flies, and I found myself to be an ENFP or an idealist; someone most comparable to Simon. An ENFP or an idealist personality displays characteristics of being extroverted, intuitive, feeling and perceiving which. Furthermore, passionately concerned with positive improvement, being kind, warm, sympathetic, distracted and motivated were all trait described in the personality test for the ENFP. Due to our selflessness, how introverted and extroverted we are, and how we can think both logically and emotionally, makes Simon and I most similar.

In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller involves a character named John Proctor, an even-tempered farmer, who cared about how others saw him as. Procter was a married man to Elizabeth Proctor and a father of three as well. Throughout the book, Procter is shown as a man obsessed with his status to protect his name. The following quote says “... there is evidence to suggest that he had a sharp and biting way with hypocrites. He was the kind of man--powerful of body, even-tempered, and not easily led….”, this shows he was the type of a person to unleash his temper with people often, although it was good because he was well known for revealing hypocrisy. In Miller’s portrayal of the ghastly, sickening inquiry of witchcraft many people in the 1690’s were people of the township were maintaining guard for their beliefs; while others of the community of Salem were cowards who took the easy out of the accusations they were on trial. The townspeople of Salem are going through a day people are courageous even in a way others could not be or were never suppose to be. In this world bad situations occur frequently and it takes a good strong person to handle them in a mature way. Dealing with them this way not only shows that the person has self-control, but also makes them a good role model for people to look up to. In the book The Chosen, Chaim Potok uses Mr. Galanter to express his opinions of a good role model. Acting as a baseball coach and gym teacher, young boys look to him for guidance and motivation every day. Having this kind of position causes stress at times, and requires him to stay calm and level headed. Throughout this book, Mr. Galanter

“My entire body went into shock. Only my eyes moved, slowly opening and closing” (Ishmael Beah 18). Ishmael had just found his family's ashes in their house, that burned down. In a Long Way Gone Ishmael Beah was separated from his family at twelve years old when his town, in Africa, was attacked. When he was eighteen years old, he went through many challenges of being a soldier in the Sierra Leone Civil War. He got through most of his days with the power of alcohol, drugs, and marijuana. Throughout A Long way Gone Ishmael lost, and partially regained his innocence, his will to survive weakened, and the damage of war continued to get worse. Ishmael Beah's theme is survival, and manipulation. Ishmael did whatever he needed to survive, and he was also manipulated during the war to take drugs, drink alcohol, and smoke marijuana.

Bad things happen from people making decisions based on lies and fear, but evil things

In the novel, Zeitoun, Kathy tried many times to convince Zeitoun into evacuating, when hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Unfortunately she was unsuccessful, and therefore he stayed in the city through the hurricane. The novel, explains Zeitoun’s obstinate refusal to evacuate from New Orleans with his wife and children during the hurricane. “[Zeitoun's] grandmother had stayed put during countless storms in her home on Arwad Island, and he planned to do the same. A home was worth fighting for.”(Zeitoun, 70, Eggers). Despite the fact that a house is may seem replaceable, this is actually symbolic of assimilation in the United States, just like Zeitoun’s grandmother refused to leave her house during many storms on Award Island, Zeitoun's has now settled in New Orleans and he is not planning on leaving.
