Yoga for Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Children with autism spectrum disorder have a unique set of challenges in day to day living. Those who have autism spectrum disorder find communication and social situations difficult. Autisms Spectrum Disorder is “characteristic include markedly abnormal or impaired development in social interaction and communication, and restricted activity and interest repertoires” (page 1 integrated approach to yoga therapy and autism spectrum disorders) Treatment is very different and needs to be individualized for each child. When looking at treatment yoga has recently introduced to the list of options Yoga was introduced in the late 19th early 20th century but it was not until recently it has been shown to help the child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. But can yoga be beneficial and instrumental in helping kids that have Autism Spectrum Disorder?
According to the CDC (Center of Disease Control) Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. Many people with ASD also have different ways of learning, paying attention, or reacting to situations that come up in the day to day living. We don’t know what exactly cause autism spectrum disorder and the symptoms can vary from child to child. Children can be diagnosed early as early as 18 months however most children are diagnosed later in childhood. ASD includes a wide range, “a spectrum,” of
Growing up with a brother that has a mental disability, I’ve become very familiar with organizations that support children with disabilities. Make-A-Wish is a well-known nonprofit organization that grants terminally ill children their dream wish. If I could choose any person to room with it would be Tommy Austin. Tommy Austin is the co-founder of Make-A-Wish and a retired U.S. Customs agent. In the spring of 1980, Austin met a child named Chris Greicius who was dying of leukemia. Chris dreamed of becoming a police officer when he grew up. Austin was determined to not only grant this wish for Chris, but to also give him something to look forward to in life besides doctor visits. With the help of other officers, Austin was able to make Chris an honorary officer just days before he breathed his last breath. This story inspired many people to grant wishes for more children like Chris, thus creating the Make-A-Wish foundation.
The lamb slaughter was a more compelling story. The plot was more convincing. The storyline was also a lot more attention grabbing. “The Lamb to the Slaughter” was more appealing because the characters were better than the ones in the “Trifle.” “The Lamb to the slaughter “ quotes the line ” as to the trifle where it says “she was rockn’ back and forth.
Autism spectrum disorders are a class of developmental disorders that impair social skills, behavior, and communication (Center for Disease Control). ASDs are considered ‘spectrum’ disorders because each patient has a unique experience in the nature and severity of their symptoms (Center for Disease Control). Under the umbrella of ASDs, there are three types of disorders, including Autistic disorder, Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (Center for Disease Control). Autistic disorder is the most severe of the three, and patients exhibit significant problems with language, communication, and behavior (Center for Disease Control). Furthermore, people with Autistic disorder often have some intellectual impairment (Center for Disease Control). Asperger Syndrome is a milder form of autistic disorder where patients have some developmental delays, but their language and intellect are not affected (Center for Disease Control). The mildest of the ASDs is the pervasive developmental disorder. These patients usually don’t meet all of the criteria for autistic disorder, but do show some signs of social and communication problems (Center for Disease Control). The number of children diagnosed with ASD is growing, and currently 1 in 88 children fall somewhere on the spectrum (Mari-Bauset et al., 2013). Boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism, and while the exact cause of these disorders is unknown, both genetic and
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a growing problem throughout the entire globe. Autism Spectrum Disorder is defined as deficits in social reciprocity and communication, as well as unusual, restricted and repetitive behaviors (Lord). Such behaviors may include running back and forth, excessive cleaning, noises, and clapping. These also vary greatly with age and ability, and the notion of ASD has been introduced to recognize these diversities (Firth). Autism was first discovered in 1943 when Leo Kanner observed 11 children with several common traits such as, impairments in social interaction, anguish for changes, good memory, belated echolalia, over sensitivity to certain stimuli (especially sound), food problems, limitations in spontaneous activity,
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a group of conditions of the brain development. (Vries, 2015). The main characteristic of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is that they have difficulties to adapt and interact with other people. Also, individuals with Autism have problems with their development of verbal and nonverbal communication. They show a repetitive behavior that is usually recognized during the first three years of life. Approximately one of sixty eight children are affected with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the United States. (Vries, 2015).
Autism Spectrum Disorders are developmental disabilities with lifelong effects for the person. They are characterized by the repetitive behaviors exhibited by the client with social and communication deficits as well. Clients with ASDs have unusual abilities to learn, they struggle with paying attention and may react inappropriately with extreme tantrums to different sensations. ASDs include and are not limited to autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, atypical autism and Asperger disorder. Research of autism has been tracked by the Centers of Disease Control for prevalence since 1996, however tracking of developmental disabilities began in the 1980s.
According to Wikipedia, "No evidence has been found that indicates Egypt ever suffered such a demographic and economic catastrophe [as the Exodus] or that the Sinai desert ever hosted (or could have hosted) these millions of people and their herds." and that "The consensus among biblical scholars today is that there was never any exodus of the proportions described in the Bible." but is this true?
Autism spectrum disorder is an umbrella term used in diagnosing a collection of developmental disorders of the brain that vary in severity1. People with ASD may have trouble with social interactions, problems with different types of communication, may practice repetitive actions or behaviors1,2, struggle with paying attention, and suffer from motor disfunctions1. ASD is usually diagnosed in children between the ages of 2 and 3, this early diagnosis is very beneficial because it leads to intervention which intern leads to more positive outcomes later in life1. ASD affects 1 in every 68 American children1 and is 4-5 times more common in boys than girls1. Prevalence of this disease is on the rise, with a 10-17% increases in cases per-year1, which could be due to improved diagnostic methods, environmental factors, and other reasons that are unknown1. One well established diagnostic tool is the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) which is 15-point rating scale3 used to diagnose children with ASD and determine its severity2. Another less accredited, but still informative diagnostic tool is the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC)2 which differs from the CARS because it is a parent rater form of measurment2. ASD has no cure, but there have been studies that show behavioral outbursts can be reduced with the use of certain movements and breathing techniques4. This encourages confidence that more aspects of ASD can be improved with similar methods.
Every year one in 68 Americans is diagnosed with autism. There are more than 3.5 million Americans living with an autism spectrum disorder (Autism Society), which makes it the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States, hence the significant amount of studies being done to explore its characteristics and find solutions. Autism, also known as ASD, is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that is categorized by dysfunctions in social situations, communications, constrained interests, and repetitive stereotypic behaviors (Siniscalco et al). These behaviors can range from mild to very severe, and may be accompanied with other disorders. Autism can be diagnosed during early childhood, while symptoms begin to show during the first
Autism spectrum disorder is a lengthy diagnostic category that includes those with impaired social interaction and communication, and those with repetitive stereo-typed behaviors (Persico & Merelli, 2014). The National Institute of Mental Health (NIH), defines the term ‘spectrum’ as a wide range of symptoms, skill, and levels of impairment or disability that kids with ASD possess. It is a disorder in where several parts of the brain have obstacles working together to complete complex tasks. It is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges (CDC, 2015).
Over the years, more people are becoming aware of Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD. The growing number of individuals who are affected by ASD have been increasing over the years. This could be do to the new DSM development of what is considered ASD or simply more children are being born with ASD. Either way, ASD is more predominate in our society today. ASD is defined in the DSM 5 as having abnormal social aspects, lack of social skills, non-verbal communications skills, deficits in development, lack of understanding of relationships, and self-stimulation through repetitive behaviors (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Although these are not all of the symptoms caused by ASD
The term autism spectrum disorders derive various definitions depending on the type of professional is questioned. A medical definition of autism spectrum disorders provided by the Mayo Clinic in 2014 states, “an autism spectrum disorder is a serious neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs a child 's ability to communicate and interact with others. It also includes restricted repetitive behaviors, interests and activities. These issues cause significant impairment in social, occupational and other areas of functioning.” This is not the definition that will be referenced in this paper. The definition that is applicable to this paper is the educational definition, mandated by federal law to be used in public schools. The educational definition of autism spectrum disorders according to the book Exceptional Learners: An Introduction to Special Education by Hallahan, Kauffman, and Pullen is “a disability wherein symptom fall on a continuum from relatively mild to severe; DSM-5 divides them into two general domains: ‘social communication impairment’ and ‘repetitive restricted behaviors.’” A
Autism is a life long disability, however each person is affected differently. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the name used for describing the different types of Autism. These include Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome or High Functioning Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (The Australian Psychological Society Limited, 2017, para. 1). The word spectrum is used as children who are diagnosed have different characteristics. These characteristics can be present very early in a child’s development, assisting in early intervention (The State of South Australia, Department of Education and Children’s Services, 2007, p.2). The main characteristics young children with ASD have are social and
Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD, is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a negative effect on a child’s ability to be able to communicate and interact with others due to the negative effects of a neurodevelopment disorder. Along with the following communication and interaction issues Autism Spectrum Disorder is also associated with restricted repetitive behaviors, interests, and activities all have been shown to cause impairment in social, occupational, and other functioning areas (Mayo Clinic, 2014). Included in the qualification of having Autism Spectrum Disorder are a number of different disorders such as autism, Asperger’s syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder (Mayo Clinic, 2014). Recently until May of 2013 all of the previously stated disorders were in their own category but in May or 2013 the DSM-5 diagnostic manual placed them under the classification of Autism Spectrum Disorder (Autism speaks, 2016). About 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with ASD which is why it is important to public health for people to have knowledge of the signs and symptoms as well as how to treat the different forms of ASD because there has not been a cure found yet for it (NIMH, 2016). Autism Spectrum Disorder has been see to be more prevalent in boys rather than girls, boys are diagnosed 1 in 42 and girls are diagnosed 1 in 189, both of these numbers fall into the 1 in 68 children who are diagnosed in the United States. Within the last 40 years there has
Autism is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts (“Autism” Def). It’s a disability that affects a person’s communication skills and/or changes in behavior. Autism is usually diagnosed before three years of age and has a lifelong persistence. The causes of this disorder is unclear and there is currently no cure for it. There are two core characteristics of autism. The first being a deficiency in social communication and social interaction. The second is a restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, and activities. Clinical features of autism include walking on tiptoes, lack of eye contact, extreme dislike of certain foods or sounds, poor communication skills, repetitive behaviors, and
