Written Assignment #1
1. Describe how you've used media over the last few days in these four areas: cognition, diversion, social utility, and withdrawal. Now describe how the media has helped you during this same period in terms of: surveillance, interpretation, linkage, entertainment, and formulating values.
I was married on May 3rd and we left on our honeymoon to Marathon and Key West, Florida on May 4th and will return home on May 14th. During this time, I have used mass media within the four areas in the following ways over the past week or so:
Cognition – I used the internet a few times to look up information regarding the town we stayed in for a

She asked me to prepare a chart summarizing information regarding some of the grant programs I oversee. She always asks for a “ton of information” which often results in my re-doing the work which I have already done.
During the encoding process, she was not very clear on what she wanted. During the coding process, I asked for a sample chart, which she said she would not provide. It was up to me to prepare it. The message was not clear since she really did not know what she wanted – and the message was verbal. I then communicated back to her via email, and asked her to provide me in writing what exactly she is looking for. The email was a little clearer and I prepared the document. As the receiver, I sent the document via email to her.
I think from the beginning she could have sent me an email detailing the information she needed and I could have just responded to her email. A lot of time the verbal communication is not clear from her and she drifts off onto other subjects. Email communication is much more succinct and helpful. Sometimes there may not be actual noise during the verbal communication; but there is “noise” in my head since I’m saying to myself this is a waste of time, etc.
3. How does the critical/cultural perspective on mass communication view the media? How does it view the audience?
The critical/cultural perspective would look at the capitalism side of the
6. Many drug safety research studies are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies that would financially benefit if the results of the study are favorable. Is this an example of a potential confounding factor?
But for another example a pizza shop in competition wit a fried chicken shop would be indirect because the products are not the same but they are still competing for sales.

A. As we (as nursery nurses) are the ones that spend time with the children and look after them, we are the first contact for not only the children but for their parents too. So it’s very important that we are seen as professional and competent people at all times. I, as an individual, work alongside a small team of professional childcare workers to support, inspire, care for and look after all the children within my care. I will maintain a safe environment for the children to explore, learn and play in. I am polite to other staff, children and parents and communicate well with everyone.
In stage one I started deciding that I was going to carry out a one to one with a patient. I decided to talk to them and begun to think about what I was going to ask the patient. In the second stage I decided that I was going to use verbal communication and then decided what I was going to ask them. I chose to say ‘are you going back to clinic?’Thirdly, I started to send my verbal message across to the patient and ask them
These theories will be useful in determining my underlying motivations behind my choice of media and content and how my experiences help shape the meaning I provide to the former. Although I have a very active lifestyle, media does consume the largest portion of my time. For the sake of this analysis, the table above simply refers to the television shows and movies I watched throughout a week, however it is important to note that in addition, all time spent of the phone, computer, reading and listening to radio also comprise of media consumption.

media The media is another main topic discussed in the course that is present within the film. The mass media refers to the technological mediated means of communication while communication signifies the exchange and transmission of knowledge, understandings, ideas and their meanings (Brym, p. 101). A critical structural functionalist view on the media is that it is controlled by a certain minority whom hold a great deal of power in society and shape the media to benefit their interests. This results in the media not always having an objective view on events and may even leave certain news out of the mass media.
My interest for the Attorney Advisor position with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) arises from my longstanding commitment to constantly improve myself. I have always enjoyed legal research, writing, and the complexities of intellectual property. I have no doubt that my enthusiasm to research, my eagerness to learn, and my strong ability to communicate clearly, work efficiently, accurately, and quickly, will make me an invaluable asset to the USPTO. I believe these traits combined with my unique skillset, developed as a result of experiences working for the Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball (Diamondbacks), Nike Inc. (Nike), and the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, Liability Management Department (AG Office)
The following Monday, when Scotty is walking to school with his friend, Scotty tries to persuade his friend to tell him what he has bought him for his birthday however his friend doesn’t say anything. Also after Scotty has been hit by the car, his friend asks him what it was like to be hit by a car but Scotty doesn’t answer his friend. Again the idea of a lack of communication. There are further instances in the story in which there is a lack of communication. There is the instance in where Ann tells the technician ‘I don’t understand this,’ when the technician starts to take Scotty’s blood. Ann (as anyone would) expects some explanation from the technician but it is not forthcoming. He continues without discussion or explanation, to take Scotty’s
The mass media has become a big part of our society and its counterparts. In a time span of 50 years this medium has influenced society to an extent where it has created wonders. This immaculate tool can control almost every action we perform, from speaking to the actions that every human being performs in society. The mass media has brought upon a new era of idea's and changes in the world we live in. As we analysis media in depth we will find many aspects of media which overlap and some of the smallest factors and aspects of media, which create the biggest impact on society.
When an individual takes a glance at the current status of the media world, there is generally a quick understanding to the fact that there is a wide range of theories under which mass communication can be examined. As learned, sometimes these theories complement each other...other times, they oppose each other. In the textbook, McQuail's Mass Communication Theory, there are five general theories listed that are effective for the research of mass communication theory and are “described as: social scientific, cultural, normative, operative and everyday theory,” (McQuail 13). While these are the specific theories that can be viewed, there are underlying perspectives that are useful for the clarification of an individual's personal stance to mass communication theory. By looking more closely at my personal stance in regard to mass communication theory, one should be able to see that I understand social-materialism to be the current standing of media, however, social-culturalism is a better alternative.
