Society as a whole has been immensely effected by the social realm. In the fashion world, it is media that creates the trends and genres of different types of clothes. This is seen as an identity. The fashion world markets their clothes to society thru the media. Using various sources such as, television, internet, newspaper and magazines. However there is a dark side to this industry. Today's society faces controversy about women's body figured. Size zero has become a behemoth fad in the modeling world. The size zero topic has caused a revolution, women around the world trying to enter the modeling industry are now harming their bodies in countless ways in order to achieve the "ideal" body. Women today face a lot of criticism about their appearances due to the superficial ideology created by the media. This has brought a lot of criticism from feminist around the world who state that women have died from starvation only to model. Today's world has stereotypes formed from various forms of media. Stereotypes have been created ethnicities and cultures. As growing individuals we see distinct relations between the two. When we see a certain ethnicity portrayed in a particular way we judgments tend to be formed enforce them on that particular ethnicity. Eventually many
The exploitation of women in production, and the exclusion of women from consumption is not the only ways in which the female body is harmed as a result of the globalization of the fashion industry. Perhaps the most obvious occurrence of female body harm in the fashion industry is a result of fashion modeling. An up-close look into the modeling industry as a microcosm of the fashion industry reveals the severe objectification and commodification of fashion models for the sake of consumption.
Females have been constantly shamed for generations if one does not act, dress or look a certain way. The media has been a major influence on women from a young age on how one is perceived in society. The media has created an impossible goal for women to achieve. The media will take multiple different parts of women that are seen as perfect and Photoshop them and put them on billboards (Kilbourne, 2010). This makes young girls lead a life where one will inevitably fail to what she has always been shown as the ideal women. This causes eating disorders, depression and low self-esteem in women, which leads to mass amounts of unnecessary cosmetic reconstruction surgeries (Kilbourne, 2010). This is just one negative issue with the way societal norms degrades women. Women are constantly portrayed as objects and to be viewed as lesser than a male. The way men are shown of needing a masculine side and cannot show femininity
“When all you see is a body type that only two percent of the population has, it’s difficult to remember what’s real and what’s reasonable to expect of yourself and everyone else.” This was stated by Arielle Cutler, who studied the recent effects social media has on the female body image. Not only has media made women feel insecure about their bodies but it pinpoints exactly what bothers them. It could be weight, skin problems, height, and even a clothing style. The media sends subliminal messages into a female’s brain that makes them think they need to reach the expectations of what they read on the internet and in magazines or what they see on television (TV). The pressure a female is put under to become the “ideal woman” is detrimental to their health, not only physically but also mentally. The images of beauty are unrealistic and are constantly changing, making it hard to keep up with the latest body trend.
Today women are mainly controlled by clothing companies, makeup companies, people, and “social norms”. Grebe explains that, “These companies set up unrealistic and unattainable goals for women, knowing women will always fail to achieve them and maximum profits will follow” (22). These companies not only take women’s money but women’s dignity as well. Grebe explains that, “The media is perpetuating the social ‘norm’ of women focusing on their physical appearance and constantly loathing their bodies” (22). There are plenty of companies that have skinny women modeling their clothing instead all sized women. In modeling women must be a certain size in most agencies, which is extremely skinny, sizes 0-3. If the women is not that certain size and
In this day and age, mass media has become epidemic all around the world. It is one of the most useful essences of human life. Mass media has been evolving through the ancient periods. Even a brief history of media can leave one breathless. The power and speed of technology are humbling. The development of mass media has had a great influence on one’s life, both for the better and for worse. In general, mass media is a means of public communication reaching a large audience, therefore it is everywhere. The long-term exposure to the media has a tendency to influence how people behave and think about the world. It is essential to consider the pros and cons of mass media as it plays a ginormous role in shaping people’s ideas, and also a very prominent role in the lives of everyone. This essay will look at the global perspective, before moving on to discuss the influences of advertising, followed by an analysis of the changes due to peer pressure.
Media is something every female and male look to for guidance when it comes to fashion, beauty, and information. “Magazines and advertisements are used to help women better themselves by giving information and products to make them look and feel better” (Serdar 1). Without magazines and advertisements there wouldn 't be an exact focus on beauty standards.. People would have the freedom to choose what they like and what they consider beautiful instead of following the crowd. “Sociocultural standards of female beauty are in every aspect of popular media. Mass media 's use of unrealistic models sends the message that in order for a woman to be beautiful, she must be unhealthy. Women are negatively affected by the constant exposure to unrealistic media ideas of beauty”(Serdar 1). Because women of the American culture constantly compare themselves to models and actors, they push themselves to diet and exercise in an unhealthy manner to achieve a goal that is both bad for them physically and mentally. “The ideal of beauty is a form of self-oppression. Women see themselves in pieces” (Sontag 1). Because females are so self observant of themselves they tend to put more attention on things that don’t actually need attention. Therefore, they feel as if their not as beautiful as a person they see on television. “Very small percent of women in western countries meet the criteria the media uses to define beauty. So many women repeatedly exposed the media images that send a message that

Video games in general are not to be blamed but a certain category that majority of the gamers play is called violent video games. Adolescents and children are revealed to violent games could have a bad influence which should be controlled in today’s society.
