Writing 102 Reflection

Writing 102 has been a great journey with so many hurdles and loopholes, but overall it has been an exciting experience. This class has exposed me to areas in my writing that needed improvement – especially my punctuations and grammar. One major struggle I had was learning to use more formal words instead of using slang. I learned the importance of structure and the importance of writing in order to organize my ideas and convey my message appropriately to the reader. This class made me realize my greatest fault as a writer, which was not being able to comprehend directions, being unable to write without using first person words, and learning the importance of using peer reviewer’s comments are also barriers I have broken. Before taking the class, I was not exposed to using only third person pronouns in writing. I struggled with this system for a while, but eventually it taught me a valuable life lesson: Life is continuous learning. Nobody can ever know it all. The difference between the mediocre and the great is the ability to see every setback as an opportunity to learn and grow. The following sentence is a sentence from the first paragraph on the first page in my research paper:
“Coming from a different country to America is a big change for many. It is like moving a saltwater fish into fresh water, it is still water, yet it is not the same thing to the fish. Immigrants usually have problems finding food they like, which are foods that taste just the same as what their tongues are used to. But the process of getting native foods that they are accustomed to can be a difficult task”.
This was very difficult to compose without using first person words, because I was trying to use my experience as an immigrant to explain how difficult it could be when moving to a different country. But I found a way to make it work, and this taught me a lesson that there is always a substitute for something else if you are motivated enough to look for
