From the first moment that I can recall my house has always been a place of silence. "Why aren't you deaf?", "You're lucky, they can't yell at you!", and "How do they communicate with people who can't hear when you're not around?" These are just some of the many questions that have been asked throughout my life. From the day my parents were born they were left without one of the senses that we all take for granted, hearing. Often times the topic of conversation was not about my parents or home life, so I started to just ignore my background and home life, and I refused to tell people about my parents. My parents have always stressed that I must learn to be independent, and I can't be afraid to confront others about certain questions and concerns. When I was just entering my teens, I realized the ability to connect English and American Sign Language fluently. Whenever my parents and I would go out to eat -or just simply try and buy things from a store- I was the one talking. Many people may think that growing up learning two languages is difficult, but the two played hand in hand easily. Learning sign and being able to fluently translate it back and forth within the Hearing and Deaf world was life changing. Coming to the conclusion of what it was like to constantly live in two different worlds and I knew that the connection between the two would only make me a better person. I had become self-sufficient; relying on myself whenever things need to be done. This meant that if I had questions about while out at a store I wasn't afraid to ask for help, if I was confused on something I wasn't afraid to ask, I had already been introduced to the adult world and it was all because of Sign Language. All the times that people put me down because of my parents "disability" only made me want to work harder. To prove to them that just because someone lives with someone that may be considered "different" isn't actually different themselves. Through this I've been taught respect and awareness, and paired with the push and drive that my parents installed, I've been able to realize how much I've changed. The deaf culture teaches many things and these things in turn make me a more complete
