Every four years soccer fans around the world tune in to see their nations compete for the most prestigious trophy in the soccer world: The World Cup. Fans of the sport have grown to love the tradition the World Cup has created; however, in the year 2022 the tradition and integrity of the great tournament may be altered. Qatar was selected to be the host of the 2022 World Cup, this selection has sparked a controversy in the “Fútbol World.” Following the selection many FIFA (Federation International Football Association) employees were arrested, tried, and found guilty of accepting bribes from Qatar officials (BBC). The bribes were used to swing votes in favor of Qatar as the potential host of the World Cup. To keep the integrity …show more content…
With the selection of Qatar as host of the World Cup the integrity of the game may be in question. On May 26, 2015 fourteen FIFA officials were arrested on charges of federal corruption. During the investigation it was discovered that these officials were taking bribes from Qatar officials in order to increase the chance that Qatar would be the chosen host of the World Cup. Many fans are calling for a re-selection, and if not granted, plan on boycotting the games. A boycott of FIFA’s largest attraction would be destructive to the entire soccer world. Cut backs would be enforced throughout the FIFA organized leagues which will result in poor field conditions, less money granted to soccer clubs, and poor stadium quality or repairs. These consequences would result in poor game and competition quality. FIFA think again. A leading organizer of the possible boycotts wrote this, “Despite clear evidence that the elections for the World Cup 2022 were ‘bought’, FIFA persists in organising it in Qatar. FIFA thinks it can simply ignore the will of billions of football fans. Don’t accept it as a fact that the 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar. If the whole world wants it, this can still be changed” …show more content…
The extreme heat and lack of safety equipment is the source to many of these tragic accidents. To this date 1,200 construction related deaths have been connected to the building of the World Cup (Ingraham); however, it is suspected that the death toll is greater. The frightening number of deaths should force FIFA to re-evaluate their decision of choosing Qatar. The World Cup is a time for excitement and celebration, it should not be responsible of carrying the burdens of these fallen souls. The country's labor ministry had this to say about the allegations, “We believe that the people helping us build our country deserve to be fairly paid, humanely treated and protected against exploitation. That is why we are reforming our labour laws and
FIFA has been violating human rights for years, and dehumanize people with poor living conditions, unsafe equipment, cheap wage. All this for the construction of unnecessary new stadiums and other soccer monuments. For the 2022 World Cup in Qatar they are currently using migrants as workers. They are paying them cheaply, and a report from the International Trade Union Confederation stated that in the past 5 years 1,200 migrant workers have died constructing stadiums in Qatar. They also predict that 4,000 will die until the first game is played in the world cup (Oliver).
In our socratic seminar about the article “Soccer’s Corrupt Soul,” we talked about FIFA’s deep-rooted corruption and where their greed has lead the World Cup’s future. FIFA is soccer’s main governing body, an oligarchy composed of very wealthy and powerful people. It has been discovered that these corporate bigwigs were associated with many deceitful and dishonest acts in the pursuit of making more money.
Over nemouse years the world has evolved and many changes have taken place. Regardless of your age, gender, religion or race its seem that sports has been one of the things that brings everybody together in the end. Whether it be sharing an interest for the same sport in general or the same sports team. With this being said corruption has entered the sports community, it is not about bringing your team together for the sake of enjoyment. Being victorious is now what is expected among your team, coaches, fans and yourself. Now Athletes and coaches are doing whatever it takes to win. Whether it be breaking the law by placing bids or accepting bids, committing fraud and willingly taking illegal performance-enhanching
As stated before no two people are the same, and now two people’s thoughts are the same. But at the end of the day everyone’s views on ethics boils down to knowing right or wrong. For example, if someone were to rob a bank that person knows for a fact that is it wrong and that he may go to jail. There would be no “Maybe it was right for him to rob the bank.” This is the same for FIFA. Allowing bribes to be placed on the next place that should hold the world cup
This world cup location was very controversial because of Brazil’s economic status. In order to host the world cup, Brazil’s government had to build lots of extremely large, extremely expensive, soccer arena’s and stadiums. They spent billions of dollars on them. And because of this, Brazil had to close down school’s because they had no money to pay the teachers with. There have been 19 World Cups since the first one in 1930.
FIFA has been at the center of a great deal of corruption during the last couple of years. There are endless topics to discuss on the matter of corruption and FIFA, but I wanted to focus on three of the biggest charges of corruption against FIFA, bribery, mistreatment of female athletes, and the use of slave labor to build stadiums to host their games. FIFA has been around for over a century and was a very respectable organization at one time, but that time is now over. This affects international business because there are currently 209 countries within FIFA. FIFA has a far reaching impact because soccer is the most popular sport in the world. To better understand why and how FIFA became so
Jasthi, helps the reader understand the negative financial outcomes of hosting a sporting event like the World Cup and what it does to the country’s economic status. Jasthi’s point is simple yet informative. He compares the spending from South Africa’s World Cup to Brazil’s World Cup. Jasthi argues that Brazil’s lack of budgeting led them spend three times more of what South Africa paid for in the 2010 World Cup. However, that was not the only concern that Jasthi discussed in the article. The other downfall of this spending was that Brazil invested too much money in rebuilding stadiums that were going to be used for a maximum of four games, and were never going to be re-visited after the world cup. Jasthi’s points were quick and concise to the reader, and helps the reader understand how the games can negatively effect the country if the country does not make smart financial

I did that so I could find some kind of reasoning for their actions, lessons I could learn from these previous situations, or how would I react? First, being part of the committee why were they in such denial of incidents occurring previously before the UEFA tournament? Was it because they didn’t want the world to see it or did they truly think nothing of it? What we can learn from these situations is the realization that politics are very much involved in sports. There can or will be certain groups that will take the platform that sports have and try to use it promote their cause. As a possible future administrator if we had a zero tolerance in policy by golly we would follow that policy. Possibly the Ukraine and Poland might have been a good time to show we will not put up with this behavior and would give them two options, one to move the tournament completely and secondly to let them host only if significant change has been made before the tournament. With being a local or citizen of those two countries is their behavior due to demographics slash cultural upbringing? There was some strong agreesive, and radical influences spread there from the World Wars
People can debate the merits of hosting a World Cup all they want. But the one thing we can all
Given the debate on the subject, a proposal of hosting a “Winter World Cup” has arisen. Backed by the likes of Blatter and Platini, the proposal suggests for the tournament to be held in January of 2022, rather than the summer. Blatter has told reporters "Personally, now that the decision
Can Soccer become the fifth major sport? Michael Rowe Ms. Taylor Sports Lit. 8/19/14 The four sports that are considered to be “Major Sports” in America today are Football, Baseball, Hockey, and Basketball.
In some cases, citizens of the host city are very opposed to certain aspects of facilities that are built to house the Games. For example, in the Sydney Olympics, the citizens held a very hostile attitude toward the construction of the Bondi Beach Volleyball Stadium. They argued that the development of that facility would close off a popular surfing beach for six months causing them an inconvenience. The people of Sydney also thought that putting an arena on this stretch of beach might cause environmental problems (Cashman 6). The recent Rio Olympics especially stirred up some controversy. The developers of these games built a golf course in a natural reserve, evicted hundreds of families to make way for infrastructure, and even built their press center on a slave burial ground (Coston). These actions are all violations of universal ethical and moral principles. As Catholics, we know that it is our job to care for the environment. When the maker’s of the Rio Games, Sydney Game, and any other Games for that matter, build a facility that disrupts a natural reserve or natural habitat of animals, it breaks that teaching. We also know that each and every person is made in God’s image and therefore deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. The people that were evicted from their homes or dug up from their graves to allow development were not given that dignity that they deserve. Along with development, the initial bidding process also brings up ethics issues. When a country enters into the bidding process to try to obtain the rights for hosting the Games, local communities often end up being motivated and run by private business interests. This leads to the interests of the citizens of the city not being properly represented. It also leads to the city spending billions of dollars just to have a chance to host the Games, which they may
On December 2, 2010, announced FIFA President FIFA Joseph Sepp Blatter granted Qatar the honor of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2022, will be the most popular competition in the Middle East for the first time in tournament history of 92 years. Where has the honor of Qatar to host the World Cup in the fourth ballot is superior to Australia, Japan and South Korea and the United States. And RPR country winner file privilege management presented the "best organization" World Cup ever, with all stadiums proposed to organize the tournament, 60 km from each other except for one Stadium. The Organizing Committee has pledged to construct nine new stadiums and renovate three other courts; which wowed the Executive Committee of
According to McMillan and Gandz case study, FIFA has had both the success and its failures with the main issue on the case study been its scandals, which include corruption, bribery, and tax avoidance. Other issues highlighted also include FIFA sponsorship deals, reforms, and unfavorable workers’ conditions that has contributed to the attitudes of most of the employees . According to the Transparency International, corruption within FIFA might involve referees taking a bribe, clubs demanding kickbacks for player transfers, or companies seeing nPow (need for power) and government rigging the bids for construction contracts. The case study has only mentioned one successful high-profile lawsuit concerning FIFA corruption due to the allegation of plausible bribery surrounding the awarding of Russia and Qatar right to host 2018 and 2022 World Cup respectively.
