In our socratic seminar about the article “Soccer’s Corrupt Soul,” we talked about FIFA’s deep-rooted corruption and where their greed has lead the World Cup’s future. FIFA is soccer’s main governing body, an oligarchy composed of very wealthy and powerful people. It has been discovered that these corporate bigwigs were associated with many deceitful and dishonest acts in the pursuit of making more money. During the discussion, people in my class wondered how, after over twenty secretive years, nobody has lifted a finger or even raised the slightest bit of suspicion when their acts of corruption were so seemingly obvious. Students then brought up people who were seen doing things viewed as greedy or corrupt to the public but have gotten away
In the case of William J Jefferson, Louisiana representative, was sentenced to 13 years of jail time due to 11 of 16 counts of corruption. This man use a number of fronts, to hide his bribery money, left a huge paper trail, and was even recorded in four different angles of accepting the bribery money, and have the audacity to try and prove he was innocent. He stated that the FBI gave him the money, so that he could give it to the Nigerian President, it was all part of the plan, and the only reason he helped the money will show all the facts of the plan would be understood. If that was the case, why did he hide the money in the freezer, inside a Pillsbury pie crust box? Its mind blowing that a politician, with all his years of education could
Taking down a corrupt part of a company is no easy task, but yet it is possible. The main target to defeating FIFA is the sponsorships (Oliver). Since FIFA is a non-profit organization, they rely on their partners such as Adidas, Coca Cola, and Mcdonalds. Fifa is estimated to making about $45bn (Critchlow) from sponsorships. FIFA recently lost Sony and Emirates as a sponsor due to the corruption scandals. That meant that FIFA lost $420 million dollars

It is by far the most viewed, played, and biggest attendance sport throughout the countries, with the exception of the USA. Being the biggest sport in the world means having the biggest fan base as well. This sport has become as close to many fans hearts just as the bible can change people who read it. In Chapter Seven, Foer discusses soccer in relation to politics and how many politicians have used it to gain power and favour in different social groups in Italy. Money is what keeps many stadiums going in Italy--as well as the government. This chapter connects these two things all the while further explaining soccer economics in
Someone who is abusing the power that is given to him or her defines corruption, however, the word in its self is more than a simple idea; it is an intricate network. Since people’s views about ethical and moral behavior affect the way corruption is examined, the word has a slightly different meaning to each person. Additionally, misconduct across various societies is viewed differently due to social and cultural borders. The criminal justice system has had many instances where corruption had affected the outcome of a case and has inserted itself into the legal process.
Soccer, the most popular sport in the world that has brought cities and nations together can be used as a metaphor to show how the world has grown together over time. Soccer, more commonly known as “The Beautiful Game” or “The World Game.” When the world stops for 90 minutes to witness that one thing we all understand, this is soccer. Soccer was first Recorded during the second and third centuries B.C. in China, where people would kick balls into small nets. The football association was started at the Freemason’s Tavern in 1863; it eventually would change to FIFA in 1904, as countries from around the world would join the association. (Jezek) Eventually as the association would expand and gain popularity they
As stated before no two people are the same, and now two people’s thoughts are the same. But at the end of the day everyone’s views on ethics boils down to knowing right or wrong. For example, if someone were to rob a bank that person knows for a fact that is it wrong and that he may go to jail. There would be no “Maybe it was right for him to rob the bank.” This is the same for FIFA. Allowing bribes to be placed on the next place that should hold the world cup
Ricardo Kaka, Zindine Zidane, these are the names of two legendary soccer players who represent the polarized sides of a very diverse spectrum of player attitudes, behaviors, and perspectives. Each player demonstrates a very high level of skill and determination that has brought them fans from across the globe, however one has conducted himself to a higher standard following respect and demonstrating fairness and honorable behaviors, whereas the other has acted disgracefully on multiple occasions and has sealed himself into the infamous side of the history books. These ideals must be reviewed and analyzed in order to understand what we have become as audiences, and what we venerate in society. Will we promote ethics or immorality? I believe these reflections can reveal a great sum about how we conduct ourselves and how we truly regard ethics in sports.
One major point that there is corruption in the United States Government is all the scandals that have occurred in the past. One of the most known is the Watergate Scandal. This occurred during Richard Nixon’s presidency. Nixon was drove from office before he could be impeached for obstruction justice.(Grossman) ”Although no one in power profited financially from the matter, Watergate nonetheless is perhaps the most egregious example of political corruption because of the effect it had in subverting the political process.” “Responding to a request from
Political corruption is a major problem in the US today. It involves almost all levels of government and affects people from all walks of life. Public office is a noble post and citizens put their trust in government officials to carry out their constitutional duties for the benefit of the citizenry. The problem comes in where both elected and unelected officials perform their duties with the goal of personal gain in full view of the law. The ethical and moral wrongs of corruption are unjustifiable in any context.

The culture of soccer is more than just articles written in sport pages, or rumors about players been transferred from one club to another. It includes a bigger picture that covers many different social, political and economic aspects of the game. In countries where the sport is not that relevant, people refer to it as soccer. Political corruption has existed throughout the ages. It believed to be most prominent in positions of power, because of the role money plays in getting people power.
