Hayley Chambers ` Blue History Mr. O’Neill May 19th, 2015 Women of Rome and Their Freedom Many women broke out of their stereotypical female role and image, and depending on the social class, most women tried to use their power to help other women, however some used their freedom for their own benefit. Women were treated as lesser beings that needed to be monitored by and they were treated as property, which needed to be taken care of. Male guardians for women was a prominent tradition within Rome. Typically male guardians were either family and or a tutor or husband. Male guardians did not just watch over and take care of the women but also formally represented the women and also protected the woman’s financial interests. Women were allowed to own and inherit land if they had a male guardian to approve and watch over their interests. Also a women was thought that their only proper concern was domesticity, and thus all women had legal disabilities and a formal exclusion from political affairs. This influenced how men thought of women; for example, during Emperor Nero’s reign of power, he killed many women who were either involved in politics and or women he did not like because he had many political suspicions about women, he mainly killed high-ranking women. (A) Potestas was very important in family hierarchy and women’s roles in family life. Many women defied the image set for their gender and subsequently controlled, influenced or were on equal terms with the men
