Women In The Progressive Era

The Progressive Era was a time period where many new ideas and activities formed. The Progressive Era held many legacies but of those there are two that were the most important, woman suffrage and government reform.

Hi, Kathleen as you mention in your post woman gain momentum in the workplace. However, women didn’t have the same opportunities as man until World War One. The woman made several advances. (Ryan, 2006). Before that time, there were few professions for women. The woman did numerous jobs that were unheard of before the war. Concerns about social and economical problems were not surprising for women. Since the Antebellum era, middle class black and white women engaged themselves in various organizations that provoked civic activities. These were all related to the social and moral welfare of those less fortunate. Temperance, abrogation, and noble amend activities were under the control of women politics before the Civil War. By the 1870s, females were enlarging their prestige organizations such as the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), which assisted females that were on their own in America’s cities. Women played a big part in the Progressive Movement that occurred in the early twentieth century. Rose Schneiderman was one of that got involved due to the Triangle Shirtwaist company that was in New York City being set on fire March 25, 1911. During this time 146 workers were killed (mainly consisting of women) from them not being able to escape because the fire escapes being faulty and the exits being blocked off. Rose made a speech to the public standing up for woman in society who has had to brush off being treated poorly because of the law cracking down on them every time they tried to defend themselves. Women have always been treated wrong. They were always second to men and overlooked. Because of the progressive era, they were able to find strength and take a stand and actually make a difference that can be known by everyone. This is because of certain acts made such as the ratified 19th amendment which states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex” allowing women to finally vote. Women were impacted for the better in the progressive era compared to before because of the movements of feminism during that time period, causing a desire for a more equal society, just like now where we’re still working on making it happen.

At the time of progressive era, women were limited with job opportunities. They had a low salary. Particularly women in factors were the main targets of progressive era reformers. These workers were young, single or immigrants who were unskilled or semiskilled in their workforce. Their lack of skill promoted low wage for them. However, they had long hours of

Darkness reigned over America as women fought for their freedom. Women suffered from discrimination based on gender for decades, always subordinate to men. This led to protests across the nation during the Progressive Era, and started a 72 year long dispute. After years of discrimination, an amendment finally passed in the states granting women more freedoms and less gender discrimination. Due to the change, America was led into a better future. The Nineteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was finally passed which legalized women’s right to vote and created a voice for women.

The progressive era which was part of a reform (during the 1890’s into the 1920’s) came about to make a change and improve society. Also, improving the laws and constitution was a big part of the progressive era. Before the progressive era women did not have many roles and it was mostly a man’s world, they dominated society. Women were not equal as men but instead they were inferior to them. For example, women could not vote, they could not sign anything without their husbands being present, even in many states would could not serve on a jury – there rights as a woman were very limited.

The Progressive Era began as a social movement and transpired into a political movement in the United States. Gender roles changed and in the 18th and 19th century, men and women developed into different spheres, the private and public spheres. In these spheres men where stereotypically linked to the public sphere which related to the political relationships and surroundings as well as paid employment. Whereas, women were commonly expected to pertain to the private sphere and follow the expectations of a true American women-in the society-as house wives. Women in the 19th century didn’t not have the opportunity to take part in political actions nor decisions. Because of their risk taking and their goal to work together to make a life changing reformation we now have the right to vote, testify in court and have higher education.

During the decades between 1890s and 1920s there was a new age of reform there was so much reform activity that historians called this era the Progressive Era. During this time there were millions of Americans that were organized in association to many solutions to industrialization, urbanization, and immigration problems that brought about a new social reform order. In Unit Two, the Progressivism era emerges during the mid-1890s that continued shaping and changing the role of all women causing them to leave their homes and changed their way of life with gaining equal rights and rights against women suffrage.

What is a woman’s role? Is it to be a housewife and take care of her husband and children? Or is it much more then that. Between the years 1897- 1917 the progressive era came of age. This era not only created rapid economic growth but also created a voice for woman. As woman began to have a voice they were ready to use it and make a change that would affect American history forever.

Between 1900 and 1916, the Progressive Era was in full motion, shaping and changing America into the great nation it is today. Progressivism changed the society politically, culturally, and intellectually. Politically, the Progressive Era sought to solve the problems of the city, state, and nation through various reforms. Culturally, it inspired Americans to express themselves through dance, film, painting, literature, and architecture. Intellectually, America shifted from traditional thoughts to new ideas that involved relativism and the role of the environment in human development. Ultimately, the Progressive Era was an optimistic effort to set America on the track of success.

This was seen as an “extraordinary period” as it produced social change, and further reinforced that “indeed something could be done” (Ritzer & Stepnisky, 2017, p. 169).
