The Arabian Nights allows the reader to view the world from an Islamic perspective. One can understand the values that shape and mold their society, such as faith and wisdom. It would not be an exaggeration to state that the Islamic society is based around these traits and are seen as crucial for survival. These traits are a major factor on how males and females are portrayed in The Arabian Nights. Women may either be portrayed as a possession of the male or the male under the influence of the female or the male is portrayed as a gullible fool. In The Arabian Nights one can see the emphasis that God’s will is imposed over everyone. Robert Irwin States this in the novel called The Arabian Nights A Companion, “Sometimes, however, one feels that the doctrine of predestination” (Irwin 197). In order to understand this structure, one must look at the story “The Porter and the Three Ladies". The Caliph Harun al-Rashid is present at this story. During his stay he witnesses what is occurring to these women, which shocks him “Seeing the girl’s condition...he and his companions were troubled.”(Pg.81). To Harun al-Rashid horror he is not able to question these women on why they are doing these barbaric acts, “felt troubled and lost all patience as he burned with curiosity”(Pg.79). This horror is not for the safety of these women’s, but for his duty to God. In order to understand why the Caliph would worry about his own safety one must understand the word itself. The word Caliph itself means shadow of God, which places the responsibility on the Caliph for the justice and peace on earth.
