Middle Eastern Literature Essay “There was something about her, a certain strength of purpose and character, which confused him…”(Ayyoub 101). This excerpt from the short story “From Behind the Veil,” written by Dhu’l Nun Ayyoub, displays how differently people treat their beliefs. This story, along with an essay, “A Portrait of Egypt,” written by Mary Anne Weaver, discusses the topic of Egypt and how their past has developed today’s culture. Beliefs tend to portray people depending on how they go about it.
Symbolism is common throughout Middle Eastern literature. The veil preserves their virginity and symbolizes honor and good morals. The veil is considered good, and when women choose to be unveiled, they are judged and looked as the …show more content…

The author shows the festival qualities by explaining that everybody wears colorful robes, gowns and veils. This connects to the essay, “A Portrait of Egypt,” because it shows the differences of the places the texts are based on, Iraq and Egypt. “A European who had never been to the East before might be excused for thinking that its people were in the middle of a great festival”(Ayyoub 98). This excerpt from the story compared to “Cairo specializes in a state of total pandemonium”(Weaver 113), shows that Iraq seems to be more calm and peaceful, whereas Egypt is full of chaos, although, they both are heavily populated. The second example of imagery was the way the men would look at the women in the story. It shows how differently unveiled women are looked upon compared to veiled women. “...expressions of flattery which came their way from the gallants...”and “...make the observer yearn to uncover the magic and the secrets which lie beneath them”(Ayyoub 98). It seems as though the unveiled women are no longer mysterious and seem easier to be with. An example of imagery is when the unveiled women are described as looking anxiously to avoid criticism. The veil defines freedom and faith, but without it, they are the opposite. “...always looking anxiously to avoid criticism”(Ayyoub 99).
