This story is mostly about a ten year old girl named Opal. she wants friends because she is new in Naomi, Florida. She also wants her mama, who left her when Opal was only 3 years old. In the book, Opal learned that she can’t hold onto something that wants to go.
It all started when Opal went to the grocery store and rescued Winn-Dixie. She saw that a stray dog was running around the store, and Opal claimed that the dog was hers so it wouldn’t go to the pound. Opal took the dog home and tried to convince her father (the preacher), to let her keep Winn-Dixie. Since her father is a preacher and helps less fortunates, he let Winn-Dixie stay. Winn-Dixie helped Opal with a lot of problems that she’s having because she is new in Naomi.

When everyone finally arrived, it started pouring, so everyone went into Gloria’s house. Opal realizes that Winn-Dixie is missing, so she ran out of the house. But then, Gloria Dump calls her back to the house and tells her, “There ain’t no way you can hold on to something that wants to go, you understand? You can only love what you got while you got it.” After Gloria said that to Opal, she ran off with the preacher to look for Winn-Dixie. They called his name over and over again, but they couldn’t find him. This reminded Opal of her mama, so she asked the preacher if her mama will ever come back. The preacher said he doesn’t think that she’ll ever come back. The preacher and Opal walked back to Gloria’s house and come inside.
