A variety of decisions along with circumstance no one person could account for set the story of Romeo and Juliet up to be a tragedy. Many of the decisions in the play are made quickly and while emotions are running high, so frequently they result in bad outcomes. So, the rash and impulsive decisions made by men in Romeo and Juliet create the problems within the play.

In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, characters have evidently not solved their conflicts very wisely because their decisions are based on their impassivity. Unknowingly, the minor characters in the play have a significant effect on the lives of Romeo and Juliet and are all responsible for their deaths in some way. These characters include Friar Laurence, Lord and Lady Capulet and Montague, Tybalt and Mercutio. The feud between the Capulets and Montagues meant that Romeo and Juliet were forbidden to be together and it forced them to keep their love a secret. They had to turn to Friar Laurence and the Nurse as their parental figures as their own were too consumed in themselves and their hatred for the other family to notice the struggles and hardship their children were going through. Lord and Lady Capulet believed that marrying Juliet to Paris would make her happier, but when they informed her of the wedding she refused. They then forced her into an arranged marriage against her will and the only way out of it was to fake her death. Mercutio and Tybalt’s continued brawling eventually resulted in Romeo’s exile, which split the two lovers apart and forced Friar Laurence’s risky plan to be carried out. Friar Laurence married Romeo and Juliet because he thought that it would heal the rift between the two families. However, his hope blindsided him to the fact that it was an impossible situation and would result in complications later on. He could have put more effort into preventing their deaths such as delivering the message of Juliet’s “death” to Romeo himself, instead of sending Friar John, to ensure that it arrived. Also, knowing that Romeo hadn’t received his letter, it would have been in his best interest to wait in Juliet’s tomb for her when she woke up and to inform Romeo of her true state.
