Deplorable Fate When James Cook said, “Do just once what others say you can't do, and you will never pay attention to their limitations again,” he was reminding the world what he has learned from being a British Royal Navy captan: that you should control your thoughts and expectations, by allowing no other person to put negative limitations on your dreams. Nowhere is this more obvious or tragic than in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, where unfortunate factors result in countless, unnecessary and unexpected deaths. At the start of the play, Shakespeare immediately informs the audience of this hostility when Gregory and Sampson, two Capulet servants, are on stage. When the Montagues enter, Gregory tells Sampson, “Draw thy tool. Here comes / of the house of Montagues” (1.1.32-33). As if the Capulets and Montagues are in the midst of battle, Gregory is ready to fight. The fact that his immediate instinct was to take out his sword and fight them shows he doesn’t like them. The hatred limits the actions of Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, by forcing them to see each other only in private throughout the rest of the play. When Juliet and Romeo first express their love towards each other, Romeo is in the Capulet’s garden and Juliet is on her balcony. Juliet says to herself, “Romeo, doff thy name, / And, for thy name, which is no part of thee, / Take all myself” (2.2.50-52). Juliet is saying that she loves everything about Romeo except his name. She recommends that he get rid of his last name, which is the only reason her family does not like Romeo, then he can have her. The issue within their love is caused by the conflict between the Capulets and Montagues, which limits their opportunities. A mini-battle exists between their families, limiting their options, but that does not stop their love.
