Although Shakespeare and his work have proven themselves significant and have been able to last to even the modern day, much of Shakespeare’s life is a mystery. The only two primary sources that can be used to look at Shakespeare’s life are his works, his legal documents, and his church documents.

Childhood
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford on April 23, 1564 and he was later baptized on April 26, 1564. His parents were John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. William was the third of eight children, three of which died in childhood. John was a merchant and high bailiff in Stratford. Because he held a position of an official in Stratford, his children would likely have been waived tuition for their education. Although there are no records to prove it, historians infer that Shakespeare went to the Stratford Grammar School due to his knowledge of Latin and Classical Greek. Because his tuition was waived, Shakespeare was able to learn writing free of cost, and this likely had a huge effect on the brilliance of his writing later in his life.

This time period between 1585 and 1592 is called “The Lost Years” as no one is fully certain as to what Shakespeare did during that time period. Between these seven years, Shakespeare went from a married man with three children in the small town of Stratford to a successful playwright and part owner of a theater company in London. Much of what happened during these “Lost Years” is merely speculation. It is said that Shakespeare was fond of poaching and that he poached deer and rabbits from Sir Thomas Lucy from Stratford. Many say that Shakespeare had to leave Stratford in fear of the punishment that Lucy would have given him. Others say that Shakespeare left Stratford with a band of actors or that he left as a merchant but much of what is said about these years is just
