In literature, characters encounter and react to obstacles created by environmental changes. To successfully navigate these changes, characters must gain awareness of their environments and gain the power to effectively take action. Thus, Janie most successfully adjusts to different environments because she develops self-awareness, attains power, and initiates action; she takes action more efficiently than Young Ju, and she is more self-aware of her circumstances than the Hunger Artist.

Now that their autobiographies have been examined, we can now start to imagine how life in Old Kingdom Egypt was like. One important observation that immediately stood out was the role of the King. In order to keep the plays feeling authentic, they consider many aspects such as costuming, music, and having small acting troupes. One of the most important things they do to remain true is they “do it with the lights on,” meaning they have universal lighting just as the Elizabethan theaters would have had. With universal lighting, the audience can see the actors and the actors can see the audience and play their roles to fit the behavior of the audience.
