There are many great names that stand out when going through the history of Psychology. There is one name that stands out for American psychology, that name is William James. James who is often referred to as the father of american psychology. The work of William James provides mean and encourages us to be open to experiences. William James was a psychologist, philosopher, doctor, and journalist who had a great major impact on the we look at the world, the body and the mind. William James was born into a wealthy family in New York on 1842. William James grandfather was one of the richest people in the U.S, Williams father inherited a good amount of the money. William James was the oldest of his five brothers and sisters. His father, Henry James Sr. was a philosopher. James schooling took place in New York City early in his life, but he also attended schools in France, Switzerland, Germany, and England. William James as a child had dreams of becoming a painter. Around the year 1858, while the family was living in Newport, Rhode Island, James studied painting for a year with William Morris Hunt. James then decided to transfer to Harvard's medical school in 1864. James was unhappy with medicine and took a break from school. The next year in 1865 he joined Louis Agassiz in his expedition to the Amazon basin. “I was, body and soul, in a more indescribably hopeless, homeless and friendless state than I ever want to be in again,” James wrote about his experience in his book The Letters of William James. James was going through health issues and he decided to not partake in anymore time in the Amazon. James II is 53 when he is crown in 1685. The Parliament, now mostly Tories, were in favor of him, and he claimed that he favored them as well. They rewarded him by letting him raise an army just in time for James of Monmouth rebellion. Monmouth was a bastard son of Charles II and claimed that James had killed quite a few people, including Charles. In July of 1685, the two James met at the Battle of Sedgemoor which resulted in Monmouth’s defeat and eventual execution12. James decided to keep his standing army. Besides being openly Catholic, he also came from a military background. His court was one of dignity. He also kept a tight purse, he doesn’t spend his money on favorites or lavish parties like his brother. He ultimately makes court less interesting and useful for those who wanted to social climb. He believed in order, hierarchy and complete obedience or be dismissed. Although the country, in general, didn’t like Catholics at all, they were mostly okay with James because they knew he was old and was sure to die soon, plus he didn’t have any son, so his successor would be his Protestant daughter Mary. But in 1687 he’s second wife, Mary Beatrice of Modena, also Catholic, became pregnant and on June 10 of 1688, James was born13. Immediately Parliament and the country was in an uproar, Parliament sends word to William of Orange, Mary’s husband, to invade England and take the throne. William agrees and he reaches England in the same year.

William Johnson was a slave before being freed at age 11, along with his mother, Amy, and sister, Adelia. He got his barber shop in 1830 from his half brother, James Miller. After starting his barber shop, he keeps a diary and he used it until he died. He also owned a bathhouse and bookstore.He married named Ann Battles, who was also a free african american. They had about 11 children before Johnson died. He lived in the free town of Natchez, and he almost had about three thousand dollars in 1835. Johnson was friends with other freed african americans like Robert McCary and hunted and fished with them. Johnson and Baylor Winn got into a dispute and it ended in Johnson`s favor in court. In 1948, he became the 19th pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Johns has the ability to speak and read several different languages. He was a community activist who loved helping African-American girls who had been raped by white men and bring them to justice.
