Have you ever woken up in the morning, looked at your clock and says 5:30am, and thinking, it's so early I'm tired and not ready to get up. This is why all of our schools need to start later in the morning. Schools need to start later in the morning, because people are more awake for the day, less reckless driving in the morning, and are more physically and mentally healthier. One reason schools across the nation need to start later is because, students need more sleep so they can be more awake and ready for the day. Most adolescents need at least 8 hours of sleep. Two-fifth of all students get less than six hours of sleep! That is very bad for your body. A fit body needs sleep. Kids whose brains and bodies are developing, need more sleep than kids normally get today. Most people believe that students get enough sleep, and that it's better because they get out of school earlier. This sounds convincing at first, but they failed to state that people who get more sleep pay more attention and can get better grades and attendance in school. Studies show that kids get harmed getting up really early in the morning. Not just because of more sleep, but because of their health. If your body does not get a good amount of sleep than you will not be very healthy. Once again to conclude …show more content…
Schools should start later because teens will be more aware of their surroundings. Studies show that a rise in crashes happen, because teens drive recklessly because of the lack of sleep they got that night before. Some other people may say that driving in the morning is completely safe and harmless. They lacked to say that teens usually don't like to drive in the early morning. Kids who walk to school are risking getting injured by teens who got only 3 or 4 hours of sleep that night
Early school start times prevent many students and teachers from getting a full nine hours of sleep per night. Some people say that waking up early will help prepare them for later in life; however, this is actually hurting them because of the likelihood of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and many other impacts to students health. Schools should begin later in the morning because it will improve grades, student-athletes that participate in school , and the overall health of the students and teachers. Starting school later in the day will increase the overall health and productivity of a student. Students could develop serious mental health issues and diseases which would ruin them and those around them. The following excerpt is from the book The Promise of Sleep written by William Dement and
School days should start later in the day because there are many benefits to doing so. Such as improved grades, Test scores, and safer roads because teens won’t be as drowsy if they sleep 8 plus hours.
One reason that school should start later is because it is unhealthy for children's bodies to go to school that early in the morning. If school starts before 9:00AM children develop chronic sleep deprivation. Chronic sleep deprivation cause sleepiness, clumsiness, and weight loss/gain. Some kids wake up as early as 5-6AM to get ready for school. Some kids might have to walk to school too.
It is to be true that a regular high school student needs 8-10 hours of sleep so that their bodies can rest in addition to recover from a long day. However, the students bodies are not functioning correctly on a school day which generates a slow reaction speed as well as alertness at school. Their bodies are not functioning correctly due to the load of sleep that they obtain regularly. Statistics from (McKibben, 2015) analyses that 2/3 of high school students are getting less than seven hours of sleep. They are
“They say the early bird catches the worm but for teens in high school, it would be better to catch some shut-eye.” – Nike Kennedy. Waking up early is pretty bad in itself but waking up early then having to sit and listen to someone talk for several hours is even worse. Starting school later would allow for the student to stay awake, and not make teachers feel foolish when their students have their head down falling asleep. School should start later because of the many benefits it would provide for the students and faculty.
The first reason schools should start later is because teens would do better. Evidence for this is that the AASM says that schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. This could help high- and middle schoolers to get better grades in their morning classes if we applied this rule. The second piece of evidence is that this argument isn’t new, other people have been at this for a long time, meaning the dispute isn’t old and the problem has occured to the teens of the past. It’s very difficult for teens to get tired before 11:00 p.m. If we let them got to bed at that time, that means that they would have to sleep in till 7:30 a.m. Schools are starting at 8:00 to 7:50. That doesn’t give them a long time to wake up and get ready for school. (All evidence in this
They need more sleep than the adults. In the same way, getting their proper hours of sleep makes their body and mind ready for school. Students who are tired during school can’t focus and learn at their best, because lack of sleep damage learning, attention, and memory. A recent study from “Start School Later”, “Academic improvements have been show, and overall school climate has been measurable improved when high schools have restored later start times” (1). In addition, teacher won’t have to worry about the students who falls asleep during class.
Whether you admit it or not, everyone promises to wake up in ‘just five more minutes’ whenever they have to get up. Most high school and Middle schools start as early as 7:00 am and this is very unhealthy for a teenagers developing brain. Schools need to start later in the morning for adolescents and teenagers to be able to focus and be alert when learning new things. Teenagers would get more health benefits and it would be healthier for the brain and body if schools started later in the morning. Also, if we started schools later, it would also benefit teachers and parents and overall, the community.
Students hate getting up so early for school. Right? Teenagers on average need at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night. A two thousand twelve study shows that students who start school an hour later than usual saw their math scores on standardized tests increase an average of 2.2 percent. When students are able to get the sleep they need, they are able to get up and make it to school on time. Also when students get the sleep needed, they not only are able to make it to school on time but it gives them the sleep they need to be able to function which improves academically. High School start times should start later because it allows more sleep for teenagers, increases attendance and improves academically.
School can start later because kids and teens have been known to decrease in grades and they are not performing well in school. Kids and teens stay up too late on technology and television. "Getting enough sleep is important for students’ health, safety, and academic performance,” Anne Wheaton, the lead author and epidemiologist in the CDC’s Division of Population Health. School is hard sometimes when you aren't moving around and you sit in a chair all day. You can get really tired, so it is extremely important if you get a lot of sleep at night.
I think schools should start later and this is why I think why. When school start later kids would have better grades. They would get better grades because they could stay up longer to study because school would not start right away in the morning. Some car crashes are made by teens and when teens are hurts like that they can’t attend school so therefor they can’t learn.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! I am pushed out of my blissful dream and pulled into reality, my eyes don’t want to open, just for the noise to stop so I can go back to that wonderful peaceness in my warm bed. It’s my alarm going off, for a second I consider hitting the snooze for those extra five minutes, but I know if I do it’ll be another rushing-to-get-ready-morning. Schools should really start later! Ninety percent of teens are sleep deprived and I am one of them. Starting school about an hour later has many benefits as shown in hundreds of schools around the country. Some of these benefits include: students feeling more awake, better test scores, better attention spans and improved health. Changing school times can help students exponentially.
It has been believed for generations that the earlier that school starts the better a students life will become believing that it is necessary for a student to wake up early so that their brain can be more active. It is also believed that students who sleep in or have a hard time waking up are lazy and some might say that they don't care about their education. These statements are false recent studies show that the earlier that school starts the more it will impact students negatively. Schools should start later because earlier school start times lead mental and physical health problems, later school start times reduces tardiness, absenteeism, and improve the students safety, and later school start times improve academic performance.
One of the reasons that school should be started later is because it does not give growing teens enough time to sleep. Sleep researcher, Wendy Troxel, who spoke on TED, says that high school aged kids’ sleep cycles do no start until 11 p.m and do not end until 8 a.m. This means that whenever students’ alarms go off from anywhere around 5-7:30 a.m, it simply does not
Do you ever wake up and feel like you haven’t gotten enough sleep? The reason is because in reality you probably haven’t. Studies show that schools should not start any earlier that 8:30 in the morning due to teens suffering from sleep deprivation. There are many negative effects this condition can have on a teens body including a direct effect on one’s physical and mental health, public safety and excelling in the future. In the Ted Talk video, " Why school should start later for teens" by, Wendy Troxel. Ms. Troxel explained why school should start later for teens.. Students are very drowsy in the morning and are usually rushing to get to school on time which limits breakfasts times and healthy food options. Schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. for several reasons but sleep deprivation is the most important. Sleep deprivation can cause a direct effect to a child’s general health and behavior, public safety and potentially future success.
