Many students who have low grades or don't have the energy to do what they want might be deprived of sleep. Parents and teachers have noticed the lack of sleep in students, and now schools are wanting to start later in the mornings so students can get the sleep they need. Schools are wanting to start later and I defend this idea because students grades will increase, their moods will get better, and students will be able to take control of their lives.
First of all, I believe that schools should start later in the morning because of the students grades. According to Lauren Gold the students with the best sleep score – those who spent the longest time asleep and most time in deep sleep – were also the ones with the highest grades in the class. (Source D) This shows that the students who sleep more, are more apt to pay attention in class, which therefore means they would get better grades. For starters, sleep loss may result in irritability, impatience, inability to concentrate, and moodiness. (Source H). Have you ever woken up in the morning and been extremely grumpy? This is most likely caused by the lack of sleep you are getting. Not sleeping long enough causes the body to be tired in the mornings and that causes us to be in a grumpy mood. Furthermore, new evidence shows that sleep is essential to helping maintain mood, memory, and cognitive performance. Schools all around the nation have starting times for school, that are too early for the students and teachers alike. Schools starting times should be 8:30 in the morning or later, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sleep loss has become more common in children due to early start times which only gives them 6-7 hours of sleep a night when growing children should have 8-9 hours a night. children suffer the chronic loss of sleep due to the hormonal roller coaster that you call puberty, which only lets them begin to go into a REM sleep around 10 p.m. . It’s also been proven that adolescent children suffer from highers risks of physical health problems, mental health problems, lower test scores, missing school, substance abuse, and being in a car crash due to sleep deprivation. Students end up having to get up before 6:30 to get ready and catch the bus or walk to school, but when you have to study for hours after school, eat, clean up, participate in extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs, and do chores in less than 4 hours to get the sleep they require to be healthy mentally and physically it’s almost impossible. School should start later to better our future generations, with more sleep we could have more positive members of societies.
Having a later school start time can increase a student’s academic grades and awareness. Thirty-three percent of teens say that they fell asleep in class. Even though this is a small portion of teens, falling asleep in class shouldn’t even happen once. Also, this means they are getting less than what they need,(eight to nine hours of sleep a night). A school needs to pack as much teaching time as they can in a day, but if that means waking up a student at a time so early, then there's no point.When a student doesn’t sleep as much, students are not aware as they would be if they had a good night’s rest. If we were to start school later, academic GPA’s (grade point averages) would definately increase. Isn’t this what we want in our school? It is proven that the more sleep you get, the more awake and alert you actually are. I interviewed Michael Claffey, a sophomore at Newington High School, he stated “ Goooooud.” Also Jorge Premto a sophomore at Newington High School stated “Yes Michael, yes I do believe school should start at nine o’clock am. This will thus help further my education because I will be well rested.” In all, we need school to start later because it will help us with our education.

Without sleep, the human brain cannot fully function, and a person’s common sense may dwindle. High schoolers are not sleeping enough hours a night to help them grow up to be law-abiding, helpful, positive citizens, and early school start times are to blame for this. In the article “Why school needs to start later” from the website Forbes there is a study that says 50%-80% of students are suffering from sleep deprivation, if school would start later then this problem would be solved and help students improve in attendance, grades, and most importantly test scores.

One of the leading reasons why schools should start later is restlessness. According to one of the articles, “teens are often still seen as the root cause of their own chronic sleepiness” (Lewis). It is said that the circadian rhythm shifts during adolescence, resulting in the ability to stay awake later. This decreases the number of hours of sleep a teenager receives daily, so tiredness during school occurs. Also, technology has consumed the lives of many young adults and may contribute to less sleep (Lewis). Personally, my parents used to take my phone before I went to bed because they wanted me to be able to function the following morning. Although I hated that back then, I understand their reasoning today and thank them.
