On average, there is a shooting throughout the country where the victim was left defenseless each day. even with strict gun control laws set in by the federal government, many Americans still have faith in our second amendment. Gun control is proven ineffective, According to Richard Epstein of the New york University of Law, “We can confidently predict that crime will go up unless and until there is a vast expansion of the public police force.” (Epstein 1). While gun control law are in place there are still too many guns for the federal government to keep track of within the country, Richard Epstein states that “upwards of 200 million firearms of all descriptions are available for general use in the United States.” (Epstein 2). Trevor Burrus from Cato Institute's Center for Constitutional Studies showed how the use of guns for good are far greater than uses for the bad. “In the past 20 years, the cases of permit holders using their guns improperly are quite rare.”(Burrus 3). This is a problem for gun control because the valid arguable point for it is becoming increasingly smaller. This is also a problem for the media because they report vague negative gun usage rather than positive because a large majority of the media's reporters are liberal gun control advocates. Americans who concealed carry firearms are better off in a defense position rather than an unarmed civilian. “studies have found that Americans use guns defensively between 830,000 and 2.45 million times per year.” (Burrus 2). This is a problem because a very small percentage of gun related incidents make it to the news, therefore people think that there aren't as many firearm crimes than there is, and could potentially be unarmed in an emergency situation. Also this means that since there are this many people using guns defensively, there are people who die innocently because they are unarmed. From this, the government had make the laws that prevent people from being able to defend themselves in desperate defense …show more content…
To rectify this problem, the United States Government could set laws the lighten the rules on gun control but still having some restriction so unscrupulous criminals cannot purchase military grade firearms. Also there could be extensive background checks so people not fit for gun ownership will not have possession of firearms. In all, gun control is a serious problem to America and many innocent lives have been lost to being unarmed and
Throughout this paper I will be challenging the arguments of Jeff McMahan’s paper Why Gun ‘Control Is Not Enough where he concludes that the only effective form of gun ‘control’ would be for The United States to make it illegal to shoot a gun of any type. He begins this argument by citing the “central pillar” of the argument for those who are anti-gun control is that when more individuals own guns, there is a mindset that the entire population is safer. With this logic, it can be inferred that citizens feeling unsafe in the current environment of their country are those seeking protection, one way being through the purchase and ownership of a firearm. Safety is imperative part of ensuring peace of mind, which then impact the peace of the
Gun control is a very controversial topic that has has a huge impact on the United States of America. One side believes that if guns were taken away as a whole, the country would see significantly less gun related crimes and death, while the other opposing side thinks that taking away guns is not only against the Second Amendment but would lead to an increase in crime and death because the government would take guns away from people who are legally registered to own and conceal guns. The ongoing debate will continue until the foreseeable future but their are plenty of reasons why more gun laws should be made. Taking away guns is not the answer, learning how to deal with gun violence is the key.
Strict gun control is not the answer to America’s problem for the following reasons: First, Criminals can still acquire weapons in many illegal ways, strict gun laws violate the rights and liberties of American citizens, and gun control does not stop crime from happening. According to Laws, “The firearms being used in crimes are overwhelmingly illegal weapons, and unfortunately, the government is unable to track illegal weapons because of their illegal, unregistered status” (Gun.laws.com). First, many criminals can purchase it from a dealer that appears to be legal. PBS Frontline reported that “ The next biggest source of illegal gun transactions where criminals get guns are sales made by legally licensed but corrupt at-home and
To begin with, gun control laws aren’t doing any good in their current state. In fact, from a study done from 1980 to 2009 “assault weapons bans did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level.” This reveals us that it isn’t the laws that are in control, it is the people that are in control. To elaborate, another study found that “states with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crimes.” With crime rates dropping the deaths and injury rates dropped an “average of 90 percent.” In addition to less crime, one law passed by the government was for civilians to conceal carry, which means to carry a firearm undetected. This law being passed is what caused the drop in crime and violence, and again seeing as how a law for gun carriage is good, it is shown how it is on the people to make the right decisions. So, if there wasn’t a law for concealed carry, there may be more accidents. There may be a scenario in which a bank is being robbed, if and when a civilian is there to incapacitate the perpetrator, no harm will occur to the surrounding audience (Gun Control).
The debate over gun control is often perceived to be to control reduce crime. The politicians use it as fodder for the emotional voter. Regardless of your view on gun control guns will be a fact of life in American. The US contains roughly 270 million of the world’s estimated 875 million privately owned guns (McInnis, 2007). All agree we must find away
Crime and victim of crimes are and everyday news headline in the United States. What is never far from these headlines is the high levels of these crimes were committed with a gun. The next ensuing headlines are the topic of gun control. Many will argue that there are too many guns in America. Advocates of gun control subscribe to their argument that guns are easily assessable that there is a correlation between the number of gun crimes and the availability of guns. Gun right advocates will point out that the high numbers of gun related crimes are due to the size of the population. A continued argument is the majority of crimes committed with a gun were obtained illegally. Gun control will not stop crimes committed with guns, it prevent
In conclusion, gun control laws should not exist, and new ones should not be created. Americans have the right to defend themselves. Americans also have a constitutional right to own guns. America is overall safer when there is less gun control. Even though some may think that gun control would help keep America safe, in reality it
Today, there are an estimated 357 million firearms in the United States. Today, there has been an increase in mass shootings since the year 2000. With this sharp rise, debates have begun on how to solve the problem. In order to combat this rise, some argue that there should be restrictions on who, and what type of guns an individual is allowed to possess. For example, Los Angeles, California, is notorious for having some of the strongest restrictions on firearms. Gun control laws such as prohibiting residents to own a handgun or rifle magazine that fits more than ten rounds, has been issued to quell this problem. This requires residents who possess these items to remove, sell or transfer them out of city limits. This law, with the intent to increase the safety of citizens, has in turn taken away their second amendment right to bear arms. Gun control supporters justify this disregard for the second amendment on the basis that the general welfare of the American people will increase. These restrictions although in the name of safety, have taken away the rights of law-abiding
“The United States has a huge number of guns, perhaps as many guns as there are adults, an estimated 300 million”(Carter). The argument on the governmental control over the large amount of firearms is heavily debated in today’s society. I think that this argument is important in our society right now. Gun control is frequently brought to the surface in the news when there are acts of terrorism in America. One side of the argument would say that regulation of weapons would lead to the protection of innocent lives. The other side of the argument believes that more gun regulation leaves civilians defenseless to other people and to tyrannical government. The points of the arguments on both sides are the interpretation of the second amendment, the effect of guns on people’s safety, and strictness of gun control laws.
According to Sean Davis, cofounder and CEO of The Federalists, “More gun laws won’t prevent evil people from doing evil things. Human nature cannot be legislated away,” (Davis,1) For instance, on June 17, 2015, Dylann Roof, a white supremacist, killed nine black people at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. As a matter of fact; South Carolina has some of the strictest gun control laws in the Southeastern part of the U.S., so, is the lack of gun control really the cause of shootings? There should not be an increase in gun control laws because we have the right to bear arms, individuals are able to acquire firearms from the black market, and most mass shootings have occurred on gun-free zones.
Gun Control I believe are great laws that help the country rid themselves of violence by taking away fatal weapons that are used by those unsuitable to use respectively and defensively, but that is what the gun control laws are for. The gun control laws are to take away weapons from the ones who would use them not for self defense, but rather they would use it for reckless murder. To be honest the gun control laws are not 100% guarantee, because of the fact that you really don’t even know if those people the people who have a clean record with the cops. You never know they can change their mind and go crazy and go and do a murder, but it is better than just giving and selling guns to everyone in the United States and allowing anyone to buy and sell weapons. Being able to have people being able to have their weapons in their pockets is a controversial issue, their is a good and bad to it the good is it is great for self defense at critical moments the bad is that that person who has the weapon holstered may just be a person who is going to commit a massacre. You see nobody knows who will not or who will murder people it is hard to tell even if someone has a non criminal background it is still hard to tell. In fact when guns are allowed to be holstered the murder rate in the country rises as shown in Agresti, James D., Smith, Reid K. & Guerra, Rebecca. “Gun Control Facts.” Just Facts. 6 November 2017. Web. 8 November 2017. (-- removed HTML --) . When gun control laws are thrown to the curb they put many more lives at risk such as this website showing murders in states increase when weapons are holstered.
The key issue in the gun debate of today is whether or not guns should be for the exclusive use of the military and law enforcement personnel. Gun control advocates believe that today there is no need for a regular citizen to own or carry a firearm because there are law enforcement agencies such as the police to protect us from crime. This is a naïve way of thinking in order to justify an invalid argument that cannot be further from the reality that the victims experience when confronted by criminals. In America, there are less than 1 million police officers. This number is irrelevant when the population is more than 300 million. When you Add this to the fact that, in less than 3% of reported incidents, police arrived in time to stop the crime or to arrest the offenders, ( Kates & Beard, 2013, p.1691-1692). Gun rights activist believe that it is foolish to not be armed and ready to defend yourself and your family. Even the United Nations and other non-governmental organizations have declared that “there is no human right to self-defense or to the possession of defensive arms”, (Kopel, Gallant & Eisen, 2014, p. 1-2).
Guns are used 80 times more often to protect a life than to take one. According to statistics by the FBI, nearly twice as many people are killed by hands and fists each year than are killed by murderers who used rifles. Our laws claim to regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, or use of firearms, but what they can 't control is the people themselves. This not only relates to gun owners but every citizen in the U.S. who doesn 't stand for the fact that these laws are restricting the rights and freedom a person has. Gun control is not effective as a law because it contributes to more violence, violates individual liberties and does not even accomplish it’s main purpose of preventing gun-related deaths and injuries and reducing crime.
The second amendment in the constitution has given American citizens the “right to bare arms”. Laws have been placed to restrict firearm ownership and rules have been set if you do own a firearm. Does placing these laws of ownership stop the crime or protect the citizens? These questions have been asked by many citizens and lawmakers when creating laws regarding gun control. However, the debate on gun control is nothing new. In 1924, Presidential candidate, Robert La Follete said, “Our choice is not merely to support or oppose gun control but to decide who can own which guns under what conditions.” This debate has been brought up multiple times still in modern day due to no one settling on laws regarding ownership of a firearm. Statistic rates show gun control laws in fact do work, so why haven’t law officials put these into act? School shootings are happening more; fear is being driven into citizens as they go about their daily life. Gun control laws need to be enforced by law officials in order to control the harm guns can bring to citizens.
Despite the fact that, since 1968, more than three hundred thousand Americans have been killed by guns. Today, just autos cause more deadly damage. As of late, the normal number of individuals murdered by a handgun for every year is twenty-four thousand. The U.S. Congress and state lawmaking bodies have discussed limitations on gun possession for quite a while. Endeavors to battle crime are best served by concentrating on the criminal component and not with gun control enactment. Hoodlums ought to realize that when they violate the law there will be quick apprehension, indictment, and discipline. Exploration is starting to demonstrate laws don't lessen the measure of brutal crime in our general public. Gun laws have just succeeded in incapacitating the law tolerating and making the criminal's workplace more secure (Unfocused 1). Official Executive of the National Rifle Affiliation Neal Knox told the subcommittee on the criminal law of the United States Senate, "Gun laws come up short on the grounds that they don't address the issue. The Issue is not ownership of the guns, but rather abuse of guns. We can't anticipate that lawbreakers will comply with gun laws when they have as of now demonstrated carelessness for law and a request by their criminal activities. The main individuals influenced by gun laws are quiet, law-standing native, who never manhandle their gun right (Gottleib
