One of the main reason why I think that Athens would be a better place to live is because of their education. The boys in Athens do not have any formal education, but they do pick up a trade from their fathers. They are taught gymnastics and wrestling though. This is better than Sparta because they are not taught anything except how to fight. Another reason why Athens would be a better place to live than Sparta is that of their government. Athens' government is democratic with all free citizens capable of voting or holding a government position. This is better than Sparta's government because Sparta has an oligarchy with only two kings that make all the decisions without anyone's say. In addition, The Athens military was primarily based on
Sparta’s government was said to have a mixture of the major types of government which is oligarchy, monarchy, and democracy. While Athens seems to only have a democracy. In Document 2, an excerpt from “The Spartan Constitution” by Aristotle there’s a quote that states “they praise Lacedaemon because it is made up of oligarchy, monarchy, and democracy..” This quote tells exactly what type of government Sparta had. It’s also said that Sparta is the foundation for the governments we now have in the world. Athens on the other hand had a democracy as stated in Document 3, an excerpt from “Funeral Orations” by Pericles a quotes from this excerpt states “it is true that our government is a democracy, because it’s administration is in the hands, not of the few, but of many..” This quote clearly states that the type of government Athens has is a
Imagine you had to choose between two very, very risky places to live in. Well, that is what people had to do 7,000 years ago. The two places are called Sparta and Athens, both had very harsh and violent laws. Trust me we are all very lucky to live in the places we do now compare to these two places. Now on to having to choose between the two, the only reason on why I would choose this place is because of the different laws for the men. Obviously, I would say that because I am a boy. I would rather live in Athens because of how fair the laws are compared to Sparta. There are many laws in Athens that are better than Sparta. One of the laws includes how they rule their kingdom. In Ancient Athens, it was run by the people themselves in the city. All of the citizens in Athens were happy they had that they had that freedom. In Ancient Sparta, there was not much freedom from voting for their rulers. The only reason that is because only a small group of wealthy, powerful men could rule Sparta. There are many more reasons why I think that Athens is better/ fairer.
Athens is more superior than Sparta through, government, economy, and culture. Athens government is a democracy which means all citizens get to take part. In Athens “ all men are on an equality” which means “ Not of the few but of the many” (doc 3 pericles). Every citizen in Athens is allowed to take part in government, even poor citizens. Unlike Sparta, who has an oligarchy, monarchy, and democracy. The Spartan government is made up of kings and elders only. Not everyone gets to participate.
Sparta, a military city-state, and Athens, a very ethical city-state more concentrated on the arts and a better education, were two powerful city-states in Greece and were often at war with one another. Sparta and Athens were very different from the way they ruled, to the way they conducted their normal life. In my opinion, the better place to live depended on who you were. If you were a boy, Athens would be a more beneficial place to live as boys had many privileges during their childhood. Sparta would be the better place for a women to live because the rights they had, were more than an Athenian women had. If you were a man, the best place to live would be Athens, as he would have more freedoms and choices.
Athens had a better government in my opinion. I think Athens had a better government because they created a democracy. According to the Athens and Sparta Document Set, a democracy means “rule by the people”. The Athens also got to abolish politicians they did not like. Athens also had ten generals, meanwhile, Sparta has two kings. In my opinion, I think that having ten generals is better than two kings because they understand you more. Sadly not all Ancient Athens were citizens, but if a free male would be a citizen if his father was a citizen of Athens. Later on, they changed that law, it was then bothering the father and mother had to be a citizen for the child to be considered a citizen. Sadly the women didn’t get that many rights but they soon they got more status. The Athens also made it to where not only the wealthy can engage in the jury service. In the Athens, you have to be an 18-year-old man to complete military training. On the other hand, in Sparta, you have to be a 30-year-old to complete military training. Basically, I’m trying to say that the Athens had a better
Athens has a better government system then the Roman Republic. some might say the Romans were better. But Athens is more about the people; they are also more secure. They are also carful with who can be a citizen rather then "stingy". They are just more carful.
Athens is superior towards Sparta throughout ancient Greek history. During the Archaic Age, Sparta was solely focused on fighting wars and training their children for these wars. Athens on the contrary, was a city that focused heavily on the arts and was a very relaxed and peaceful city to live in. In Athens, all men born to Athenian parents were citizens, in Sparta, only the wealthy were citizens. In 594 BCE, Salon, the new leader of Athens, he created a constitution that ended the political control of the wealthy. Unless someone was part of the 1 percent, Athens gave members of society more rights than Sparta. By 508 BCE, Cleisthenes came to power in Athens and creates a democratic constitution of all people. While this advancement occurred
EDUCATION IN SPARTA HELPFUL OR HARMFUL? Sparta is the strongest city-state in all of Greece. Their army could smash through their opponents with their battle formation, the phalanx. What made it so that this powerful city-state so strong?
Sparta had the geographic advantage above Athens. Sparta is better because, according to Document G, “The Eurotas River provided much-needed water, while the nearby plains allowed the ancient Spartans to grow all the food they needed.” Sparta was already provided with enough supplies on their own and didn’t have to trade things with other city-states. Having rivers, mountains, and rivers gave the Ancient Spartans the right environments to grow many things such as figs and wheat, the Ancient Spartans also had enough room to raise cows for meat, milk, and cheese. Another reason why Sparta has the geographic advantage is shown in Document F, which states, “Sparta thus came to control some 8,500 km² of territory making it the largest city state
Known as the strongest smallest military in ancient Greece with a government ruled by imperial rulers and having a hard working society. Sparta was better than Athens because it was stronger militarily and was more orderly in society and government. I would rather be a Spartan because its repsents a force of strength and power. Stronger powerful better trained army that, include a society with citizens that were more ready for war than Athenian. Government structure that was imperial and had all the resources a civilization would need to have a society.
Mr.Duckworth states, “ As an Athenian, one could get a good education and could pursue several kinds of art and sciences. Sparta people, on the other hand, were not open to education and they only concentrated on military strength and obedience and they didn’t interact much with the outside world.” This proves that Athens would have been a better place to live because is that Athens has a very open and modern outlook, and that Athenians grow infrastructure wise in the ancient times. Another major reason that Athens would have been a better place to live is because boys were not forced to join the army.
Introduction Athens and Sparta were two of the largest, most powerful, and most influential cities of Ancient Greece. They may have both been big and historically well revered, but their societies were structured and ruled very differently. This difference is especially true politically speaking. (Athens & Sparta: Democracy vs. Dictatorship, 2016) Sparta was very focused on growing and maintaining a strong army, in efforts to ward off any uprising from their rule over the Helots.
Athens had a form of government called a democracy which is what we practice here in the United States. They would put all their citizens name in a pot and randomly choose people as representatives. In ancient Sparta on the other hand, they practiced a form of government called an oligarchy. This means that they had a few people ruling, as in fact they had two kings. The issue there is that the power remains in that family line and cannot change, whereas in Athens it can fluctuate.
It’s me again, today I experienced jury-duty and realized how magnificent it is to be a citizen of Athens. The city-state is just so beautiful and possess great government, morals, values, and so much more. I’m so proud to be an Athenians and dedicate time for the government. We have well-rounded, caring people in our city-state unlike Sparta. Athens is superior compared to Sparta, we’re clearly the better city-state. It’s so delightful having equal justice for those who are citizens because of the fantastic government are provided with. We have three branches of government and they all check and balances each other. I believe this is a crucial part of why Athens is a splendid place. Our democratic government features allow
“Athens and Sparta” by Mr. Duckworth states, “Where they differed was that while the Spartans had militaristic values, Athenians had Democratic.” Even though both city-states had good reasons to live in them, Sparta were better. Sparta would have been better to live in because Spartan women were more fortunate, Sparta used their army to protect others, and Sparta was self-reliant. First of all, Sparta gave women more freedom than those in Athens. The text states, “In sparta, women had rights that other greek women didn’t.”
