Why I Write, by Mark Batterson, was a video that caught my attention because of the way he observes writing. Batterson sounded enthusiastic about writing for passion rather than just money, or being the best-seller. He make the viewers see writing from a new window, or maybe his words really affected me. When Batterson mentions, “ If all people do is read my books, then I have failed them… I want my words to inspire people” (Batterson 0:29-0:37). When he said this, I was like wow! I had never tought of myself failing, yet we both have the same purpose which is to be there for our readers; help them out discover, and cause motivation. Indeed he has encouraged me into writing in anew way. I want my writing to be powerful and motivating even
Everyone knows what writing is to one extent or another, but we all have different definitions of how it should be done and varying degrees of seriousness about the art. We all have a process of writing, but each is unique to ourselves and our own experiences. Annie Dillard and Stephen King are two well known authors who have published many pieces, two of which describe how they view the writing process and let their readers get a peek of what goes on through their minds when they write. These two pieces are Dillard’s The Writing Life and King’s “What Writing Is.”
In Mary Pipher’s “Writing to Connect”, Karen Cangialosi’s “Healing Through the Written Word”, and Sam Dillon’s “What Corporate America Can’t Build: A Sentence” each writer talks about the unlimited importance of writing. Each writer has a different but extremely valid piece to their work.
All writing comes in many different styles and attracts a certain audience in which it strikes their minds and opens them up to a new world of thinking or looking at things. “Writing to Connect” by Mary Pipher tells about this concept and elaborates on it greatly to encourage aspiring writers who may be feeling discouraged. Writing to Connect is a chapter in Mary Pipher’s newest book Writing to Change the World, where she discusses the use of powerful writing, changing aspects of the way people view things, and inspiring others to share their own stories and never be afraid of what you feel needs to be shared. Pipher directs the chapter toward aspiring writers to tell her audience they should never give up and inspires them with the use of rhetorical choices. Specific rhetorical choices provide further support for Pipher’s purpose of writing the chapter, she effectively writes to show her audience it’s never wrong to write what they feel, and to take chances in their writing. In “Writing to Connect” by Mary Pipher, she urges aspiring writers to push past their comfort zone of writing with the use of identification, personal anecdotes, and historical texts/occasions to effectively persuade them to never give up on what they feel needs to be said through writing.
Writing may be an enthralling experience for one and a clever way to decompress for another. In general, however, writing has different purposes for a variety of people. “Why I Write,” written in the late 20th century by Terry Tempest Williams, describes various reasons for writing narrated from a female’s perspective. The short essay begins in the middle of the night with a woman engulfed in her own thoughts. She abruptly goes forth by reciting the multiple reasons why she continues to write in her life. Through a variety of rhetorical devices such as repetition, imagery, analogies, and symbolism, Terry Tempest Williams produces an elegant piece of writing that offers the audience insight into the narrator’s life and forces the audience to have empathy for the narrator with the situation she is incurring.
Why do you write? Is it because you love to write or ,you have to write for a school assignment or etc. I know Stephen King writes because he loves it. Every day he is willing to block the world out and just write. He encourages others to be willing to shut a door and write in other words block the world out and get rid of distractions and just write your heart out. I found this quote to be interesting in his piece”When you write, you want to get rid of the world do you not?... When you’re writing, you’re creating your own worlds”(21,King). I love the message this sends use your imagination, express yourself through your writing. That’s what I hope to be able to achieve. On the other hand some writers write because they feel like they have
In my English 1010 class, I have learned to do a number of things through writing essays. I have written a Literacy Narrative, a Discourse Community Analysis, and a Writing Research essay. Firstly, I have learned to identify how an author’s purpose, audience, genre, and context determine effective writing. The purpose of the literacy narrative was to help me understand myself better as a writer (Jones 1). My teacher was the intended audience of the narrative. The genre of the narrative was non-fiction by cause of it being about my experience as a writer. The context of writing made my writing more interesting and more effective. Knowing those elements helps you to compose writing that is more effective due to you needing to know what you need to write about and who is receiving your writing. I displayed these skills by going into detail about my experiences with reading and writing through my life. As shown in the following sentence from my literacy narrative I shared how fun and exciting it was when my second-grade class received the opportunity to write a book, A Book of Future Astronauts, “Everyone in the class was truly excited to be writing our own book,” (Writing is Good).
There are many situations that inspire people to challenge themselves to become a better person or a successful person in life. In the two articles we read in class, both authors were inspired and passionate about finding ways to be successful and have a better life. Baca was inspired to learn how to read and write, so he could express his ideas, beliefs and how he felt in life. Baca stated, “Writing bridged my divided life of prisoner and free man. Writing was water that cleansed the wound and fed the parched root of my heart.’’ For Baco, writing has helped him get justice and becoming a better person. On the other hand, Dr Steve Wright was inspired to find success and happiness by doing activities that have ‘’Flow.’’ Like the two authors,
Everyone on the planet has a goal set in life, but only a handful attempt to improve to obtain their goal by studying the subject their goal is in. In my English class, English 101 this quarter I was astonished by how much I had progressed as a writer sharpening my writing skills and also learned a lot about writing that I hadn’t learned before. In my writing portfolio for this quarter I had to write an autobiography essay, a research essay, and this reflection essay to develop my writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better writer that gave me the self-confidence and skills to take on the world on my own.
Every word written or read is a chance to better yourself or someone else. Our words carry an enormous significance with them. Even if a person doesn’t enjoy reading or writing, they can not deny that fact. I bring this up because reading and writing has shaped me into the person I am today. So it is no surprise that I am willing to rant about how great reading and writing can be.
The three ways that one’s Christian faith motivates him or her towards excellence in writing would be faith, honesty, and loving others. Humanity since the start has communicated through various types of writing. Writing has advanced from the stone age period of drawing into something that progressions a man's thought. History has shown that writing is essential in reaching the intended audience. For example, Biggs stated that, “when an officer develops a reputation as a good report writer, others look to her or him as a mentor. The struggling officers tend to emulate the writing style of the “good writer” and begin to use the same phraseology and word choice,” (Biggs, 2016). In light of the content and presentation of writing one may form
From communicating with the world, to the ability of being skilled in a career, writing is an essential tool to have in life. The importance of writing and its application is covered in video two. It begins with Keena Turner; an athlete from the previous video, discussing how understanding what is being read is one key to being a good writer. He states that “communication…revolves around you being able to read and understand,” and even though taking time to read may not be “glamorous”, it is always better to be prepared. Equally important, it is said in the video that out in the “real world”, writing is more than just a grade. Rush Limbaugh notes that in life, “you’re competing against far more than just the classroom you’re in.” Seeking a
The quote that I most closely identify with is, “A writer is motivated by need—the need to express himself/herself. To put it another way, writers write because they simply have to write. It is their way of dealing with their emotions, with their understandings, with their lives. When poet Alden Nowlan was once asked, “Why do you write?” he answered, “What else would I do?” For me, writing is a never-ending journey of self-discovery. I could no more give up writing than give up breathing. It is as much a part of me as my skin.” –Glen Sorestad. I identify most with this quote because as a writer, you feel the need to express yourself/thoughts on paper to create an incredible novel, poem, short story, etc. You can let all your emotions flow
Years of working several different jobs I started to engaged in the process of creating, understanding, and connecting to knowledge and literacy. I became more involved with my work assignments and connected to and learned materials that were given to me. At the age of thirty six writing is still difficult at times because writing has so many subjective aspects it is more complicated than two plus two equals four. Sometimes I feel if there is not a real purpose for writing it is hard for me to get motivated. However I have learned over the years that literacy helped me with the essential steps, to learn exactly what I needed to earn an important education and career credential. At times I still find it hard to learn
Fortunately, writing is a skill that can be both taught and practiced to a point
Inspiration is often defined as “the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative”. For me, writing ignites my creativity. Per recommendation by my therapist who helped control my severe anxiety and depression, I took a Creative Writing course during my Junior year of high school. The course helped keep me focused and let me destress since having time allotted to putting feelings down on paper gave me a new sense of self as well as allowed myself to have downtime between Advanced Placement classes. I have continuously sought ways to utilize my love for writing in order to keep myself motivated and feel a sense of personal awareness. Despite my love for writing, it is not what inspires me most in life, but it does complement what does: hope.
