My geneticist inspired me in a way that made me realize how important genes are in almost every aspect of living things and I want to be a part of it. My goal is to attend two years of community college and earn an associate's degree in science. After two years of community college I will transfer into University for two more years to major in genetics and minor in political science. I want to combine political science with genetics to make our society a better place. My fascination with politics and genetics influenced me to pursue those career paths. Having an ecosystem that is healthy is crucial to our environment. Since I live near the ocean I joined a group of people to help clean up the beach. Growing up I loved biology and understanding
When I was young, I remember enjoying shows like “The Crocodile Hunter,” or “Kratt’s Creatures”. I idolized Steve Irwin and the Kratt Brothers, and would pretend to be them when I’d play outside. The woods were a constant source of fascination ever since I could remember. I think I’ll always be in awe of the wondrous natural world. Subconsciously, its something I’ve always carried through my life. In high school, I had no idea what I was going to do with the rest of my life. Then, I took Biology with Mr. Bill Klein. His teaching reconnected me with the my inner kid who loved nature. I credit my renewed love for biology to him. I started looking into careers where I could do what I loved, study wildlife. Then, I heard about wildlife biology. I fell in love with the thought of walking in the woods, researching the natural
I plan on attending either Hastings College or the University of Nebraska-Kearney in the fall to further my education after high school. Doing well in school has always been a huge priority in my life. I plan to major in Genetics because I love to be able to work in a lab where I can learn new things daily and help others. Ever since I was little I was in love with science, so I feel like that is why I started to gravitate towards genetics more when I started high school. I felt like I had a connection with the field in that I was meant to do something involving science in my life. The next step in my career plan consists of mainly going to school to get my degree in Biology and then continuing on to Grad school for another few years. After I complete my schooling I will be searching for a job pertaining to genetics. The main goal for my future would have to be, being able to work with children and families who are struggling with genetic
Firstly because I want to continue to grow up in a healthy environment. My motivations are seeing all the places in the world that are being destroyed due to climate change. Places like the Great Barrier Reef used to be inhabited by sea creatures and fish but now due to waste and raising sea level temperatures it will be gone in two decades.( Site)
The Midcoast Conservancy seems to truly understand the connection between healthy environment and healthy people. People and the environment are not individual entities. These two things are interconnected, and it is important that people are educated as to how and why we depend on the world around us and it depends on
My educational goals are attending a four year university getting a bachelors degree in science with a minor in chemistry. Throughout my time in university I would also like to become a certified Phlebotomist and EKG technician. With obtaining my bachelors in science and minor in chemistry this will be a step towards my final education goal in applying to a master program to become a Physician Assistant. Being able to understand and know health scientific problems has been a lifelong goal of mines helping people to know more about what they can do to prevent or become better has always been my
While I certainly do not consider myself one who is particularly concerned with the environment, I do enjoy God’s creation and find that making my little corner of the world friendly for a wide variety of flora, fauna, and animal life brings an amount of satisfaction to me. Therefore, my three goals tie into things that are already important to me.
One health profession I connected with was genetic counseling. The presenter was Ms. S. Bonnie Liebers, who was the director of Clinical Services and CEO Genetic Counseling Services. I thought her presentation was interesting to see how genetics plays an important part in one's overall health. She began to talk about how many visit a genetic counselor in search of information regarding their genetics. I was astonished that many that go to her clinic were more worried about their race and ethnicity rather than the probability of getting a serious condition. A genetic counselor begins by asking the medical history and looks for common diseases in the family. Once the information is obtained she performs a test that checks the likelihood of patient's susceptibility to the condition. I was confused by the fact why some patients did not care to know if there are susceptible to disease like cancer. I oftentimes wonder what kind of genetic information I have and if I am susceptible to
As a genetics counsellor I will provide you and your family the necessary information and support regarding any health issues or concerns that you may have. I will provide you with a diagnosis of any genetic conditions and supportive advice and guidance to your concerns. I believe you two appear to be healthy, but are concerned about a disease that runs through one of your families, sickle cell anaemia. You are concerned about any future children that you may have as you do not want them to inherit the disease. To start, let’s go over what we know about the case so far.
[During October and November of my gap year I will be completing my PADI Divemaster qualification in Mexico] and meanwhile undertaking a marine conservation module and [Spanish lessons]. The marine module will give me a much greater understanding of marine ecosystems, but also the effect that pollution is having on the hydrosphere, not only in our oceans. There are many solutions to oceanic pollution…Why does marine ecosystems interest you? Because it is relevant, directly affects humans etc…
“No man’s knowledge can go beyond his experience”, this statement by John Locke captures the essence of why I am interested in taking the Chromatin, Epigenetics, and Gene Expression course. I have always had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. As a child I was always asking questions about why or how things worked. I would always tinker with things, taking them apart and reassembling them. I questioned pretty much everything and longed to be able to do experiments and find solutions to unanswered questions on my own. In high school, I volunteered, participated in athletics, held leadership roles in several clubs, and also worked part-time. Despite my many extracurricular activities, I never lost my thirst for knowledge and academic success remained my foremost goal. To challenge myself I enrolled in the most advanced courses available and took classes offered from a nearby community college, I graduated with both a high school diploma and an Associate’s Degree.
I am fascinated by the ways systems of animals and insects can exist in the same place and work together in their habitat to make the ecosystem function. I already ask questions about the natural world, now I want to ask questions like an ecologist. I want to know why animals live in their specific habitats, and how each habitat perfectly suits the living things that it hosts. Additionally, I want to know how I can take my knowledge of ecology and apply it to conservation. If I understand how a vulnerable or endangered animal perfectly suits its habitat, then maybe I can find out if living factors are affecting its survival. I believe conservation is crucial to keeping the Earth sustainable for all living creatures. The Earth is the only home that humans have and we must take responsibility for our actions that have harmed the planet. If we understand what the Earth needs to heal and we can do anything at all to help it, then we must take those steps to aid its
Genetics undoubtedly plays an important role in each person as it transmits physical and character traits. But is this the only reason why a person is happy or unhappy?
Genetics has always played a role in my personal and professional life, although I may not have recognized how much. I grew up with my best friend having a genetic disorder (Gardner’s Syndrome) although it was not until our adolescent years that I really understood the implications it had on her life and her family’s life.
There are a wide range of jobs in the field of Genetics. Genetics is important because it gives scientists information on the gene’s of the body, heredity, genetic variation, and how each of these things play a part in the function of a living organism. One job in the field of Genetics is a Genetic Counselor. Genetic Counselors work with people who have an inherited risk of acquiring or also carrying certain genetic disorders. They evaluate the family tree to find where the illness stemmed from, who else in the family has had it and the likelihood that they will suffer from it as well. They help patients gain an understanding of the disorder before it occurs so, they will know how to take care of it in the future. Ordering genetic tests in an accurate way to search for illnesses present in a person’s family.
Though currently enrolled full-time for a molecular genetics program, having approximately four months between the pre-final and final year of the program off, I am seeking a summer research/intern program in order to further develop my laboratory techniques while gaining experience in research within the field of genetics beyond my current course requirements to better myself as both a student and a future industry
