Outsiders: Misunderstood or Misjudged? Outsiders, defined as a person who does not belong to a particular group. The bigger question is: What qualifies them as an outsider? Or how does one determine that this “outsider” really is different from everyone else? Do we get to know this person before we provide them with the title or do we simply give it to them based on the way we view them from afar?

The feeling of being an outsider can occur in almost anybody's life, considering how many people there are in the world, it's almost guaranteed that they have felt different from others at some point. An outsider is someone who feels like they do not belong or that they are different from everybody else. Everybody has felt this in their life one way or another, and with this, we can conclude that being an outsider is universal. As something is universal, it’s described as being well-known or common. We have all experienced the feeling of not belonging, as feeling like an outsider can happen anywhere and at any time, whether it’s due to high standards, conflicting ideas, or social status.

An outsider can be a person who does normally not fit in with the people around them, acknowledging that they are unique and special in their own way. Another way an outsider can be looked at as is “a person not belonging to a particular group, set, party, etc.” (Dictionary.com). With there being different meanings to the word outsider an actual outsider can be timid and absent to the people around them or they can be outspoken and persistent by any means necessary.

The experience of being an outsider is universal. It is something most of of can relate to and an experience that will probably happen sometime in everyone's lifetime. There are many examples of this in literature.

According to Dictionary.com the meaning of outsider is ¨a person not belonging to a particular group, set, party, etc.¨(Dictionary.com) The concept of insiders and outsiders has been around for many year in the all society. From “the black sheep of the family” to the kid that sits alone at lunch, ostracization can be found in every social group and situation. While a person can be an outsider because they are misjudged and misunderstood, some who are on the outside place themselves in that position. The Breakfast Club is one example of people being outsiders.

The first reason why “outsiders” are misjudged is because others judge them on where they live, who their parents are, and their social status. Ever since humans have been on earth, we place each other into a socioeconomic status. Certain people might live in a terrible, broken down house in a dangerous part of town, due to not making enough money. Others might be rich, living in a ginormous mansion, and living like a king. The poorer and less fortunate can't often help that they don’t have a lot of money. Yet, some richer people judge these poorer people on things like where they live or how they might dress. This happens a lot more in high schools, although some adults could do this too. Others might judge the “outsider” because of who raised them. The “outsider’s” parents might have had a “troubled past” in the eyes of some people and they might judge the outsider for being their child. It could also be the exact opposite and others could judge the outsider due to their parents being “wealthy” or “snobbish.” People are judged all the time based on lives that they can’t control. An outsider might want to try and create a better life for themselves

What is an outsider? An outsider is a person who is not excepted by or is isolated by society. Have you ever been an “outsider”? Everyone experiences a situation where they weren’t able to fit in. The feeling of not being able to fit it is universal. Not everyone is the same and in certain situations you may not be able to bond with everyone. Everyone is focused on being judged or being the person who is judging someone. If you are not like everyone in your society group, those people don’t except you. Nowadays our society feels that if you aren’t up to people’s expectations, you are known to be an “outsider”. Being an outsider is universal because not everyone is social, not everyone can afford nice things and not everyone is popular.

Have you seen those people that always alone and don’t hang out with anyone. You might call them outsiders. Before you start judging learn how they are important to society first. Outsiders do have value to society and I’m gonna prove that to you how. Outsiders do have value to society.

Are outsiders simply those who are misjudged or misunderstood? Whether outsiders are misjudged or misunderstood depends on whose perspective you view this question from. When you look at someone you are developing an opinion of them, and you may be misjudging them by deciding they are an outsider. While when you are the person being judged you feel that you are just simply misunderstood. You may have experienced one or probably both of these perspectives. Moreover to truly understand what it means to be an outsider you need to understand both of these perspectives.

Outsiders are continuously surrounding us and leaving a question in what role they play. Outsiders are people who stand apart from what is normal to the area. They will commonly be looked down upon. Outsiders are people who will stand apart from a group they don't want to mix with. Outsiders are usually looked down upon for good reasons sometimes.

Everyone could be an outsider. People could misjudge a person, and unintentionally make him become an outcast. There have been many literary works throughout the time about outsiders, and one of the most popular works is Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis”. The main character of the story, Gregor, was an outside because he was misjudged by everyone around him, included his family. For example, “With his left hand, his father picked up a large newspaper from the table and, stamping his feet on the floor, he set out to drive Gregor back into his room by waving the cane and the newspaper” (149). In the world of popular culture there are many “outsiders,” those who believe they do not belong or are not accepted by society. Many people ponder the question of what makes them diverse from others. Some people may be criticized for their situation in life. An additional reason is they can be judged on their outer appearance, and finally they can be distinguished by their mistakes. There are many faulty justifications that a person can be underestimated.

In Ryszard Kapuscinski’s lecture, “Encountering the Other: The Challenge for the 21st Century”, Kapuscinski argues that everyone is part of another group that is deemed the ‘Other’. Kapuscinski states that “Others are indeed Others, but for those Others, I am the one who is Other” (Kapuscinski, 22). Thus, being an outsider is a universal condition since we are all the Other to someone else. However, some might argue that being an outsider is not a universal condition as humans are by nature social animals so being an outsider is a rare occurence. To this, Kapuscinski also states that being an outsider is universal as “...the Other is a mirror into which you peer...a mirror that unmasks and denudes, which we would prefer to avoid” (Kapuscinski, 28). In other words, being an outsider is a universal condition even though humans are social animals because the Other is a reflection of qualities that define a person and humanity in general. Being an outsider is purely based on the criteria of race, religion, gender, beliefs, values, language, culture and the list could go on. Outsiders do not have the same opportunities as the insiders, they are not as respected by society due to discrimination and lack of respect for their values. Michael Jackson and Barack Obama are both idols of this disturbing occurrence. The American Outsider is a stereotypical checklist that brainwashes those who are followers. Those who are petrified of going against society and understanding that it is wrong to do such cruel things to someone like themselves.
