Hello Sarah, great post. I agree with you that law enforcement agencies must follow certain protocol with strict rules that standard for everyone. This is because over the years, these procedures are put in place because after many years of researching individual that best fit for law enforcement. Thus, police department have come to realize that officer must meet the necessary requirement to qualify for employment. An example is that extensive background check as well polygraph examination, education, and the ability for individual to able to pass a physical ability, and the minimum requirement is a must. Moreover, police officers are individual that are entrusted with a lot of responsibility so law enforcement agencies throughout the country
They were trained to serve and protect, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t mess up from time to time. Now, I am not sticking up for those who don’t deserve it, and I will admit that there are some Officers in the world that shouldn’t have a badge anymore. But when you look at the whole of Law Enforcement, people have to realise that not every single Officer is racist. Not every Officer has the same exact mindset, or opinions of things. We are all people, and every single person is different in their own ways. There are no reasons for you to judge a single Officer, because of the actions and words done by another Officer. If you were a waitress at a diner, and your fellow waitresses are very rude and disrespectful.. How would you feel, if every customer that came in, assumed that you were just as rude? Or what if you worked for the Department of Homeland Security, and people automatically assumed that you just wanted to make their day horrible? Although police officers take an oath to protect and serve citizens in our society. we have some officers that our corrupt and willing do anything just to protect themselves from being exposed from their unethical behavior. In 1994 three officers from New Orleans police department committed an unspeakable crime murder for hire and a violent drug gang. The killing of Kim grove was thirty-two years old and was gunned down by police officer that were there to protect her instead they killed her.
Many people know of the police officers of today’s world and that it is their job to enforce the laws set by their government, but not many people know the history of your typical everyday United States police officer or how they came about. The idea for neither your everyday police officer nor his or her department they work for or how a police department operates, originated in the United States. Over the years though America has made changes and adapted its system over the years to make it more suitable for its countries beliefs and practices.
Following directions is one of the most important skills in life. The ability to follow direction the way you are told and the way it is suppose to be done is a recipe for success. Following directions helps avoid preventable mistakes that may cause costly mistakes and as it pertains to law enforcement, someone’s life. Making sure you are paying attention to instruction is critical, and nowhere is this truer than in the workplace. Always follow steps carefully, know what you are supposed to do and when you are supposed to do it. In regards to law enforcement following directions is crucial to the safety of yourself and to others whether it be, firearms, officer survival, enforcing the law, or just contacting a citizen.
Throughout history, there has been very few careers that require such a high degree of an ethical standard such as the one required for law enforcement. There is, however, a multitude of careers that require the dedication and heart such as required for a police member. Where this dedication and heart differs relies solely on the difference in the job. Officers are required to be aware of their surroundings nearly all the time as if something were to happen they would be required to navigate through the situation successfully. Somebody such as a CEO for a multimillion dollar company would not require this same quality due to the fact it is not part of their job description and the only individual that he/she needs to be worried about is themselves. However, in today’s society, and with media being an ever growing aspect, some police officers have decided on their own personal way to handle justice. So unfortunately, this small percentage of police contract a huge amount of negative eyes to the profession. This small number of individuals bring a negative view to the police department as a whole and for this cause an issue in the public’s eye. Regardless of what many individuals believe, many of the police officers decide on the ethical side of the job and are hardworking professionals who seek out to just serve the public. I believe leaders set the standards, so police officers should be held to higher standards than the general public. Police officers are considered to be at the top of the organization chart. A wise saying states, “If the head (brain) is not working correctly the other parts of the body is lost.” The police are considered to be the head and the community is the other part. How could they enforce the laws that have been set by the government if they had no ethics and morals? There would be complete turmoil through the country.

I understand police officers everywhere have their own lives on the line, every time they suit up to protect and enforce the law amongst the population. I do appreciate the risk they do to keep us safe from absolute chaos. However the authority these policemen have is mostly abused in one way or another, John Cassidy’s report in the NY Times article “ The Statistical Debate Behind The Stop-and-Frisk Verdict” provides statistical evidence that Black and Latino citizens are stopped a lot more frequently than White citizens. This is because racial profiling, this practice of racism should be ceased completely, especially with law enforcement. They are clearly directed towards minorities, which is a violation of the fourteenth amendment, which guarantees equal protection under the law.

Even though there are lot of limitations on how law enforcement does their work on a daily basis, there are two main limitations in criminal law that stand out amongst the rest. These two concepts of criminal law that affect the day to day operations of the law enforcement profession are known as statute of limitations and ex post facto laws. Each of the factors associated with these two concepts severely impact the work of law enforcement in some way shape or form.
