corruption in the New Orleans Police Department
Although police officers take an oath to protect and serve citizens in our society. we have some officers that our corrupt and willing do anything just to protect themselves from being exposed from their unethical behavior. In 1994 three officers from New Orleans police department committed an unspeakable crime murder for hire and a violent drug gang. The killing of Kim grove was thirty-two years old and was gunned down by police officer that were there to protect her instead they killed her.
In 1990’s the justice department said that New Orleans was the highest country with complaints of police brutality in 1994 there were than forty officers arrested for bribery, rape, bank robbery and Police corruption has been an issue for many years. Len Davis had worked for the Fifth District with officer Sammy Williams and Paul Hardy as patrolmen. Their salary at that time was $18,000 a year. Davis and his partners took thousands of dollar pleasure trips and took on a leadership role of drug racket getting under table payments to other New Orleans police department recruited to guard warehouse of cocaine (Mustian, 2014).
In 1994 officer Len Davis who was thirty years’ old and was accused of conspiring with Paul hardy 27 and Damon causey 24 in the murder of Kim grove that was 32 years old. Kim groves was gunned down on Alabo street a block from her home. According to authority’s Kim grove had made a complaint to the department’s
In my opinion, most police departments and public employers (city and state) go through their civil service department which alleviates misconduct. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) here in Louisiana hires both commissioned police officers and police support staff through the city’s civil service department. The NOPD does not have a union but does has an Integrity Bureau which investigates all incidents of misconduct (DWI) and citizen complaints (Police brutality) involving the NOPD’s police officers. However, the police department’s personnel wages, benefits and work hours are handled by the civil service department to alleviate corruption and to directly adhere to the city’s needs. In sum, when a police officer of staff member has
Two New York police officers, Frank Serpico and David Durk had previously reported wide spread corruption in the department to several different supervisors, all the way up to the city's department of investigations, and nothing as done. (Dempsey & Forst, (2016).
Police officers all take the same line of oath when they enter onto the force. Unfortunately, there are some that don’t respect their oath enough to stay out of trouble. If anyone takes a moment to google the term “police officer busted”, a million articles come up just within the past year. It’s sad to say that a few bad apples of mix are giving the force a bad name. Other officers take their jobs with pride and integrity. For some, it’s too much not to give into the criminal life while trying to protect others. The article I chose this week discusses an officer in Fairview Township who has been on the force for 17 years.
Corruption within the New York Police Department is a quickly growing phenomenon; to an extent, this is largely due to the cop culture that encourages silence and draws the line at honesty. The good, honest officers are afraid to speak up against co-workers and in the process become corrupt themselves. When police departments were first established in the mid-nineteenth century, corruption quickly followed suit. It began with minor acts of misconduct and today deals with serious criminal activities. Scholars have noted that there is a strong correlation between the officers taking part in corrupt acts and officers wanting to fit in with the culture. In this paper, I argue that the deeper an officer in the New York police department gets into the police culture, the more likely it is that they become involved in narcotic corruption
As a society, we have come to fear the police officers who we have faithfully relied on to protect us as citizens. The men and women who are sworn under a police oath are far too often walk the line between good and evil. Within the United States we often hear of police brutality cases that are gone unpunished. Or when an officer acts without any ethical judgement and is held without responsibility. The police officers who have been hired to serve us have turned into a domestic military, with the arsenal of our army and without any rules to abide.
Police corruption has been something which has been going on in the U.S for quite a long time. It’s been something we hear or see on the news since we were children and we are continuing to see it even our modern daily lives today. The most Common forms of police corruption we hear every day are theft of money and stolen drugs.
In Oakland, California residents voted by margin of 82 percent to approve a “measure that will establish an independent police commission to oversee the city's Police Department.” Initiatives such as this will allow for more in-depth analysis and reform of the Oakland Police Department. This policy is a result of the police scandals associated with the department this year, including sexual misconduct involving several officers and the teenage daughter of a police dispatcher, racist text message exchanges between officers and the resignations or firings of several police chiefs.
Police brutality is not a new subject. It has been around for numerous years, and like most issues, has resurfaced to the public’s eyes. The recent events brought up the question: Does there need to be a reform in the system in the police system? In this year alone, there have been countless cases of individuals being harmed or even killed by police officers for reasons that continuously are not explained. What has people more attentive to this injustice are statistics showing that most victims in these police attacks happen to be African Americans and other minorities.
When you take oath to become a law enforcement officer you are supposed to stand by the area that you work within and serve and protect. While working officers are put in thousands of different scenarios. While growing up you are taught proper ethics and values and should know the difference between what is right, and what is wrong. However; many officers break down and realize that being a law enforcement officer doesn’t pay as much as they like. They fall fortune to being greedy, stealing money, and even getting into the drug trade while they are in uniform. In the end these men and women that put on the uniform are just as bad as the drug dealers who sling dope on the corner. Police brutality is another big issue within law enforcement. At times police overuse the necessary amount of force that is needed and end up injuring and even at times killing another individual. These officers are also just as guilty as the ones that they have been placing under arrest.
The American people are protected by the tireless efforts of wonderful police officers across the nation. From large metropolitan areas to small departments with a couple of officers, men and women have dedicated their lives to protecting and serving the American people. The American police force is made up over 1 million personnel and the actions of a few overshadow the outstanding acts or heroism made every day by police officers across the nation. News that goes viral about police officers usually involves egregious acts that embarrass the force however kind acts out of the love in these officers happens 100 times more. A NYPD officer, who didn’t know he was being watched, stopped and talked to a homeless man one cold night. He went and
Police corruption is a complex issue. Police corruption or the abuse of authority by a police officer, acting officially to fulfill personal needs or wants, is a growing problem in the United States today. Things such as an Internal Affairs department, a strong leadership organization, and community support are just a few considerations in the prevention of police corruption. Controlling corruption from the departmental level requires a strong leadership organization, because corruption can take place anywhere from the patrol officer to the chief. The top

Police corruption or the abuse of authority by a police officer, acting officially to fulfill personal needs or wants, is a growing problem in the United States today. Things such as an Internal Affairs department, a strong leadership organization, and community support are just a few considerations in the prevention of police corruption. An examination of a local newspaper or any police-related publication in an urban city during any given week would most likely have an article about a police officer that got caught committing some kind of corrupt act. Police corruption has increased dramatically with the illegal cocaine trade, with officers acting alone or in-groups to steal money from dealers or
As, the late president, Ronald Reagan once said, “Government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives”; this statement remains true today. Law enforcement is one branch of our government thus the statement by Reagan applies to police officers as well as direct government officials. Police officers have no intention of running or ruining the lives of citizens but to protect them from harm unfortunately this has become hard for the public to believe due to social media. The media has had a negative impact on society's view of police officers. Police officers must do whatever is necessary to protect citizens, this is their job and social media chooses what sides of law enforcement to publicize.
In the United States of America, corruption in the law enforcement department are continuing to be a major problem in the community. Some police officers are using their authority to attain profit and pleasure from resident, while other good police are continuing to do what’s right. Police corruption can happen anywhere, but major cities are dealing with corruptions such as Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and New Orleans. For example, six Philadelphia law enforcement officers were arrested for kidnapping a drug suspect and threating to cause harm to his family, which led to holding the suspect over the balcony railing from a 18th floor building (Assefa, 2014). Their misconduct and unethical leadership became one of the worse situations
Police officers take an oath to protect and serve the community. The community looks to police as a leader. I believe leaders set the standards, so police officers should be held to higher standards than the general public. Police officers are considered to be at the top of the organization chart. A wise saying states, “If the head (brain) is not working correctly the other parts of the body is lost.” The police are considered to be the head and the community is the other part. How could they enforce the laws that have been set by the government if they had no ethics and morals? There would be complete turmoil through the country.
