After Hamlets father’s death, he was allocated with a responsibility of killing his father’s murderer at a very young age that emanates to him as a shock. Before his father’s death hamlet was just a normal child who was far away from the evil side of the world; his own nature causes great conflict within him. To illustrate where on one hand Hamlets desired to kill Claudius the other he was continuously trying to find a way to get purge from the responsibility but his love and loyalty towards his father was coming in-between his own values. Hamlet said to Horatio and Marcellus that “The time is out of joint. O cursed spite that ever I was born to set it right.”(1.5.8) this elucidates that hamlet never wanted to take the responsibility of killing
Although deeply sorrowed by his father?s death, he did not consider payback as an option until he meets with the ghost of his father. The ghost tells Hamlet King Claudius, his own brother, murdered him. The ghost then tells Hamlet ?to revenge his foul and most unnatural murder? (I.v.25). In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the main character is angry and expressed his anger through the medium of allusion. An allusion refers to a mythological person, place, or thing. Many things around the city of Denmark are changing for the worse. Hamlet is angry with his mother because he fills betrayed that she would merry another man after two months of his father’s death. The allusion Hamlet expresses those feeling is when he said, “With which she followed my poor father’s body, / Like Niobe, all tears. Why she ever she –” (1.2.148-149). Hamlet is comparing his mother to Niobe. Niobe is a woman who turned into a stone and weeps for her fourteen children, which Hamlet’s mother only cries for his father for only two months. Hamlet’s expression of his mother shows the reader that she is a gold digger and was not truly in love otherwise she would have grief longer. Furthermore, these lines can only mean that he was the only person who truly care and loved the ex-king of Denmark. Meanwhile the others had already forgotten about him. All in all, Hamlet though that maybe his mother would be more impacted by the death of the King, but instead traded him up for his Uncle. Moreover, Hamlet was in denial that his Uncle was going to be the king and his new father. For him, the only true king was his father and no more. Throughout the play Hamlet, many different opportunities arise for individuals to take responsibility for themselves or others, but it is what motivates them to take that responsibility that can influence their outcome in life. From the beginning of the play, Claudius’ selfish desire when seeking responsibility inevitably leads to his death, as it causes him to take the life of his innocent brother, as well as trying to cover his tracks by acting like a father figure for Hamlet. While Hamlet’s motivation to take responsibility for his father’s death was with the safety of the people in mind, Hamlet’s personal desire to kill the king as soon as possible overcomes him, causing the lack of sorrow for killing innocent people in his path.
He shows in the soliloquy that he has done wrong and he feels now after that the guilt that he is witnessing is stronger than the reason for killing his brother. He feels terrible about the death of his brother but he must continue with his plan to obtain the power instead of allowing Hamlet to have it. He manipulates Laertes, who Claudius has turned against Hamlet, to help in Hamlets murder. He coaxes Laertes to have a duel with Hamlet so that Hamlet will be killed, Laertes asks “to cut his throat i’th’ the church” (4.7.123).

This all sets the stage for Hamlet’s mental state prior to learning that he was killed by somebody in his family. These themes of death and betrayal lead into the end of the first act when Hamlet is tasked by the ghost of his father to seek revenge against Claudius for what he did. Hamlet believes that he was “born to set it right” (1.5.190). The extremes of this line reveal that Hamlet believes that the whole reason for his existence is to avenge his father. This need for revenge drives Hamlet for the rest of the play. He wants justice for his father, but he also wants to punish Claudius for his murder and marrying his mother. He gives in to human nature when he starts striving to avenge his father’s death.
Hamlet had the opportunity to kill Claudius at the chapel but restrained himself, he believed it was too good of a death for Claudius and that if he were killed his sins would be forgiven. This shows his lack of action and proves he is a procrastinator. In his soliloquies he constantly criticizes himself for the obvious avoidance of responsibility saying, "Am I a coward? Who calls me villain? breaks my pate across? Plucks off my beard, and blows it in my face? Tweaks me by the nose? gives me the lie i' the throat, as deep as to the lungs? who does me this?" (Act 2 Sc. 2, 571-575)
Hamlet really wanted the revenge on Claudius but was really on the fence of what to actually do to follow through with then plan. Claudius was brave to feel so free, as Hamlet had opportunities to take advantage of him and had plenty of hate towards him for more than one reason. The action Hamlet may want and outcome of it, may be completely different as to what his father would do or like him to do.
Shakespeare wrote the play so Hamlet would be very dynamic, so he shows an array of good and bad characteristics throughout the play. When he is first brought into the story in Act I- Scene 2, you see Hamlet being a nice, sensitive young prince who is grieving the death of his father, who was King. His dad’s death was a surprise to Hamlet and the whole city. He was asleep in his garden and a “snake” poisoned the King. As Hamlet learned later in the story "The serpent that did sting thy father 's life now wears his crown" (Shakespeare Act I Scene V), which meant that Claudius was the one that killed his father. After his father’s death his mother then immediately married his uncle. This made him even more upset. Mixed in with his obvious sorrow about his dad are feelings of anger because what his mother did. Shakespeare wanted to emphasize this emotion it leaves you feeling sympathetic for Hamlet. In his mature, adult mind, he knows that he must avenge his father, but there lives an innocent child in his conscience who does not want to commit murder; and Hamlet perceives this as cowardice. It seems as though Hamlet is struggling with what he knows he must do, and actually doing it. While instead of pursuing his father’s revenge, he lets his emotions dictate his actions (in this case, his lack of action). So, in self-justification, he tucks away his apprehension and decides to seek proof of Claudius’s murder of Hamlet’s father. Furthermore, Hamlet is beginning to question his identity as a “pigeon-livered coward.” What is more noteworthy, however, is that both soliloquies exhibit Hamlet to be an immature boy, as he speaks on impulses of emotion, rather than logic itself.

Although Hamlet knows well enough that he must avenge his fathers’ death, the action of revenge does not come easily to him. Hamlet throughout Hamlet is contemplating the revenge for his father’s death. Hamlet is indecisive, hesitant, and contemplative yet at other times impulsive. He is still, as it is, being influenced by his reason taking into consideration that Hamlet is a scholar. He does not act upon his feelings immediately but decides to investigate further on the suspicions he has about Claudius and his fathers’ death. This attitude tends to make Hamlet procrastinate and only until he has done away with his scholastic characters will he actually play out his Acton.
According to Kastan, “Hamlet is prevented from enacting his revenge by the discomforting ratios that his literary imitations generate” (4). He is also stopped from executing his revenge because of his inability to separate himself from his father, to be different from what generated him (Kastan 4).
