The reason the United States Of America celebrates holidays is because the people or events that have in some way affected the whole country in a good way. For example the reason why the United States celebrates Presidents’ Day is because it is George Washington's birthday and he benefited the country in the best way possible however, there is a holiday where several Americans feel that it should not be celebrated which is Columbus Day. Columbus Day should not be celebrated because Christopher Columbus is not worthy of being commemorated.
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa,Italy in 1451. He had three brothers and one sister along with a dad named Dominico and mom named Susanna. He left his father’s wool weaving business to join the Genoese Fleet to sail the Mediterranean Sea. During one of adventures his ship crashed in Portugal but decided to stay there with his little brother and then began working with a mapmaker. In the 15th century Portugal desperately needed to find a faster route to Asia so they can have better trading. Columbus then decided he should be the one to find that new route, but with all the rumors on which direction is fastest he thought he found Asia but it was actually America.
In August of 1942 Columbus and his men sailed the ships of The Nina, The Pinta, and The Santa Maria. The first of four trips traveled from Spain all across the Atlantic Ocean. On October 12th he spotted and landed an island in the name of San Salvador but the natives called
Christopher Columbus is not worthy of a holiday because he was very cruel to the Native Americans. In truth it’s very sad what he did. What Columbus did was what some call the American Holocaust. He forced the native peoples to be Christian, murdering and torturing them is they didn’t convert. Columbus pillaged and robbed- eating the food the natives worked hard to get. He forced them to mine, harvest, grow, and plant all of the food and gold. The diseases that were brought killed thousands, wiping out entire groups in a few months. The killing and torture made the relationship between natives and Englishmen worse. Clearly, Christopher Columbus isn’t worthy of a holiday.
Columbus Day is a holiday that celebrates Christopher Columbus an Italian explorer who sailed over 500 years ago with three ships from Spain across the Atlantic Ocean in a daring attempt to expand our knowledge of the known world in hopes of discovering new lands (Obama). He is credited with discovering the New World in 1492. Though this sounds honorable and inspiring, it was basically a search to find new lands in order to claim and take control of them, plunder their wealth, enslave their occupants and murder any who tried to stop him (Zinn). Since the United States is built on the beliefs of freedom, equality, peace, and humanity, I don’t feel that we should continue to honor and celebrate
Christopher Columbus is a famous explorer that is celebrated yearly in America, with his national holiday, Columbus day. However, many people do not know all the negative things he did. America should not celebrate Columbus Day because of his negative legacy, his actions, and his lack of accomplishments. Slavery, death, and rape were all part of Columbus’ negative legacy. He had negative actions such as he brought dogs to attack people, caused Native Americans to end their lives, and cut Natives hands off.
We should not celebrate Columbus day. We should not celebrate columbus day because columbus did not find amaria first people were already living there. In the article, It states, while others may have reached America before him. If people got there before columbus then he did not discover america. Most people celebrate columbus day because he discovered america if he did not discover america why should he get a holiday. columbus just found land he did not even go in america he just found land that already had people on it. In the text it states, if Columbus knew the United States had a holiday honoring him -- even though he never actually set foot in any of the now superpower's 50 states. Why should we celebrate some one who did not even step
Despite Christopher Columbus being celebrated as a hero for centuries, some of his actions would not be celebrated by many. For years Columbus has been considered the first to discover America, but research concludes that a Viking had discovered America long before he did. With more and more information about him popping up, should we really celebrate Columbus Day? Columbus has been given credit for discovering an already discovered country, enslaved the natives of America, and almost completely wiped out the Taino people.
When I was younger, my impression of Columbus was very good, until I learned the truth about him. I was taught that he discovered the New World and was a man worth honoring because of that discovery. Yet, he did not find the New World. The Indians were already there so technically, the Natives found the New World and settled there before Columbus ever showed up. America only celebrate Columbus Day because it is the Day our world was discovered by someone of “importance”.
Do you know why people celebrate the Columbus day and who start it? The United States should not celebrate Columbus Day because it celebrates the mistreatment of Native Americans. One quote from the article that demonstrates this is, “a holiday called Indigenous Peoples Day will instead recognize the contributions, and suffering of Native Americans, people who lived in the Americas before Columbus arrived.” This quote demonstrates that Columbus may have improved some lives, but he destroyed others. Every year on Columbus Day, Native Americans are forced to celebrate the murder and theft of their people, lands, and homes. They should not be subject to this cruelty. Another quote that shows the mistreatment of Native Americans throughout history is, “in the 1850s, California’s leaders wanted to destroy the
Already throughout our American history there have been some efforts to get this federal-holiday status revoked, and although yet it is not, many just simply ignore the holiday entirely. As this being as it is, some people may argue still that Columbus Day should indeed still be celebrated because Columbus Day recognizes the achievements of a great explorer who founded the first permanent European settlement in the New World, but was he the first? Some may also say that the arrival of Columbus in 1492 marks the beginning of recorded history in America making Columbus Day a patriotic holiday. Or others may say that that the
Propaganda is used everywhere in life and books. It has such a complex meaning under what the people or it is saying. In Animal Farm, The Wave, and Night propaganda is used to describe what life was like for all the people in that time and how crucial survival was and how to not get outcasted.
The national holiday of Columbus Day should never have become a recognized Federal holiday. Christopher Columbus did not actually discover the Americas. There were millions of indigenous people already living in the location that he was exploring. It is true he was an explorer trying to find his way to the riches of the Indies and mapping his way for Spain and Europe however, how is it a discovery when people are already living on the land? He didn't even make it to the location he was originally trying to reach. He was also a brutal man that enslaved the people living on the land he "discovered".
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451 as the son of a merchant, most likely into a Christian household. As a teenager, he worked on a merchant ship and gained experience in trading voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. He continued similar jobs at sea until his first voyage into the Atlantic Ocean in 1470, when the French attacked his ship along the Portuguese Coast. Despite his sunken ship, Columbus floated to Lisbon, where he married Felipa Perestrello and had a son. At this time, he also began studies in mathematics, astronomy, and navigation, thus inspiring him to begin formulating his world changing plan. After the death of his wife, he moved to Spain, remarried and had another son. Meanwhile, he
The United States only honors two men with federal holidays bearing their names, Martin Luther King Jr., and Christopher Columbus. When we celebrate Columbus Day, we are honoring a man who helped spark a holocaust situation of the people of America and the Atlantic slave trade. Furthermore, Columbus never set foot on the land we call the United States, nor was the first explorer to reach the "new world". Columbus's arrival in the new world was proceeded by the explorer Leif Ericson and others. The true discoverers of the land Columbus encountered are the ancestors of the native people who were living there when he arrived. Unfortunately, the public education system of the United States has failed to teach the entire truth about Christopher
Shame that is brought down on someone is meant to make them weak and regretful, but it can also make them a stronger, more independent person motivated to make their society better. In the Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he explores how Hester transforms her shame and successfully changes the way other people in her Puritan society perceive her. By Hester choosing to become an outsider living on the edge of town she shows the people of Boston that she is not sinful but is charitable and has an open heart. Furthermore, Hester’s unique and insightful daughter Pearl, makes her a stronger, more-questioning individual able to look at things in a different way than her Puritan society does. Additionally, Hester is not verbally rebellious but

Roosevelt.
