Why Cheating Is Becoming a Social Norm Academic cheating is nothing new in the world as we know it today. It is a problem that affects all colleges and high schools nationwide. It is something that almost seems to be expected by students and for that reason there has been the creation of many new plagiarism websites. Plagiarism websites make it a greater challenge for students to be able to cheat but, it also creates a mistrust between the student and teacher. The solution to fixing this problem is to figure out the causes as to why students are moving towards cheating in the first place.
There are many causes as to why academic cheating exist in the world but, one of the main causes is that the semester’s workload seems to become too unbearable for students to handle. This is especially true for students in high school and in college. High school students are required to be in school for about eight hours a day and during those eight hours are required to sit through eight different classes and learn eight different types of material. That much work becomes extremely hard to manage and

There is a pressure put on by parents, teachers and the students themselves to maintain high grades when it comes to school. There is a big belief that grades define who a person is and what they will be able to come later on in life. With that logic hanging over their head cheating can become an intentional thing or simple just a calculated decision in order to get ahead. Academic cheating can come from external pressures as I said before; along with unfair professors with their overly harsh grading, and unfair test designed to fail students. This all then causes students to have performance concerns of needing to excel at any cost with cheating being the go to
75% of college students cheat at one time or another in their college careers due to laziness, competitive pressures, or simply fear. In “Cheating Lessons: Part 3”, by James M. Lang, he explains that certain learning environments unknowingly give students opportunities to cheat. Lang also provides tactics to help classrooms reduce the numbers of cheating, while aiding students to achieve their academic goals with the right “tools.”
As college standards increase yearly, students feel greater pressure to succeed. As a result of the rising academic expectations, cheating has become a national issue and most students have admitted to cheating at least once in their educational career. Overloaded with school work, students see cheating as an advantage and step towards academic success. Thus, cheating results from an urgency to do well in school and being overscheduled.
The article “Moving From Cheating to Academic Honesty” by Eugene Bratek, speaks about cheating and how it is affecting students. It explains that students have learned to cheat to get a higher grade in school, and because of this many students at the top also cheat to stay at the top. Another topic the article spoke of is, that students use copy and paste, cheating by using others ideas and information. I completely agree that students have taken a liking to cheating to get a better score on a test and to get a better grade overall.
Students may accidentally cheat without knowing due to lack of teaching during high school or may purposely commit the crime because they believe they can outsmart their professors. The plagiarists who believe they outplayed their professors because they think the instructors will not see their cheating due to their enormous load of papers and a busy schedule, however, the professors check every paper carefully no matter the workload. In addition to, the professors will always check Google, and many plagiarists tend to forget that the instructor has access to the web address to double check to see if the student stole information. Students who actively plagiarize, remain lazy and seem careless about their future. They have no worries about what copying can lead to because they want to pass, not to learn. Laziness shows the sign of the leading cause for cheating due to students wishing to pay ghostwriters or who copy and paste work from a website rather than paraphrasing. Genuinely confused students who do not understand the concept of plagiarism that well make do with exceptions due to their mistakes although, students who plagiarize have no excuse of their slothfulness because they know the result of
Cheating is the new culture, well it’s not the new culture is has been the culture. Cheating is when you be dishonest in class submitting work and answers to the professor as if they were your own. Not everyone has the same depiction of cheating. According to Rebekah Nathan, cheating has been part of the college culture for the last couple of centuries (Nathan 28). In college there is many ways to cheat. Throughout Nathan article, “The Art of College Management: Cheating”, she gives the readers a student perspective on cheating also their reasons and justifications. Not everyone feel the same way about the topic of cheating how Rebekah Nathan do. In Mathieu Bouville journal article “Why Cheating is Wrong?” he discuss the reasons why cheating is wrong also how it affects students in the long run. Cheating will become a more often thing and schools will continue to report high numbers of academic dishonesty. Keeping it part of the culture. Which is acceptable to Nathan, but she failed to layout the consequences of cheating. Throughout the four articles on cheating each author view it differently, but Rebekah Nathan article offers effective insight about the college culture and the practice of cheating.
In Cait Rohan’s article, “Cheating the System,” she argues that students will cheat because they believe it is the only way they can receive high grades and pass the course. Rohan states, “The root of the problem lies in the pressure they feel to succeed at any cost”(Rohan 2). She explains that students will do anything in order to pass and be
177 cases of academic cheating were reported in the 2013-2014 school at the University of Wisconsin (UWIRE 1). Academic cheating has been a huge problem in the educational setting for a long time. The effort to limit cheating is there, but has not always been the most effective or very well thought out. Academic cheating is present in every type of educational setting, whether it be the middle school, high school, or college level. It is present and it is a problem, which means that something has to be done. Academic cheating comes in many forms. These forms include using a technological device, asking other peers for the answers, and writing answers or helpful information down on objects, such as water bottles, phones, pieces of paper, or
Upon analysis of these two text, it is clear that Blum and Pérez-Peña share similar ideas concerning cheating on college campuses; however, there are many differences between methods to prevent cheating and where the blame lies. One similarity the two authors convey is students need more education about cheating and how to avoid it. Blum states that “Professors who teach writing and composition struggle to educate students about what citation means and how to avoid plagiarism”(2), while Pérez-Peña gathers that students do not understand boundaries around cheating because the institution does not educate them properly (1). Another common idea the authors share is that the 21st century student is different than those of the past. Blum says
There are many reasons why students cheat. Some are too lazy to study. Some want to take a risk to get a higher grade. Some students help others cheat by doing their work because they may need the extra money, even though they may not consider themselves cheating. Neither of those statements should allow you to cheat, those are excuses students make. Oftentimes, students cheat because they think they can get away with it. The feeling of being able to make a good grade without putting in the hard work might make one feel better about his or her self. In addition, some students may be afraid of failure. My generation is exposed to many ways to cheat being that our main resource is the internet. For example, there is a website where you can buy essays written by students from different colleges. Not only is that cheating but that is a form of plagiarism. In other words, cheating has numerous definitions.
“It is not a question of who cheats, it is a question of who cheats the most”. If everybody does it then why does it matter if you cheat every once in a while to get by. If students successfully pull it off then they easily slip by on a test or homework assignment without having to do anything, giving them more time to do leisurely activities. The reason some students cheat is deeper than that most of the time, with college requirements becoming higher, students struggle to reach those requirements without a little help sometimes. Students resort to cheating due to GPA’s, the pressure, and the reward.
Cheating, the way of the dishonorable student. It is usually defined and interpreted by many people as the way a person procrastinates something until the last minute of the due time. That person usually gets desperate because of the on coming bad mark or just plain out does not like to do his/her own work. So to make up for the time lost during the procrastinating that person goes to a person he/she has convinced to aid them in cheating, either by sweet talking them or plain out of the other person fear of their remarks if they do not cooperate with them, and gets the answers from them. In order to prevent this the
Many researchers have indicated that cheating is a serious problem on campuses (Bowers, 1964; Engler et al., 2008; Gallant, 2008; Leming, 1978; McCabe, Trevino, & Butterfield, 2001). Studies completed by Bowers (1964) and McCabe and Trevino (1996) revealed nearly identical results regarding student-cheating behavior despite the 30 year time span; both studies identified that
Cheating is always happening weather it's for school or sports or even jobs. People are gonna cheat no matter what people say or do. They are not gonna change. People like t sometimes do this for fun and just to make people mad. But there are people who put there time to make things and other people just steal there work and that's plagiarism which People could go to jail or get in trouble in that objective. So at the end it's sometimes good and bad to cheat. Just know when it's the right time to cheat and when it's
Being a college student is hard. College requires plenty of work. Some students have other things to do besides going to school; some of them need to work in order to pay for their tuition. When school isn’t the only thing students have to worry about, they might get behind in their classes, but they can’t fail them so they have to find out a way to stay on both their job and school. A large amount of students are pushed into cheating; they do it so often that suddenly it becomes a habit. Nowadays, plagiarism is extremely popular. Students don’t like using their brain anymore; they just copy and paste. To avoid plagiarism, students should do their own work; learn how to cite in a proper form, and understand that plagiarism can result in
Cheating has been prominent forever. Scandals related to cheating are in the news most of the time. Especially from prestigious institutions. It has been a way for people to get by in society with certain things instead of working hard. It has been a way for people in many educational institutions to get by with hard work. Cheating by definition is an act of dishonesty to gain advantage in examination and to avoid something undesirable by luck or skill. Cheating is very much frowned upon in nearly all educational institutions.
