Why Are The Crusades An Important Part Of Life

It ended with the muslims recapturing Acre. The crusades were a series nine wars that Muslims and Christians fought against each other to get Jerusalem, the Holy Land. The Crusades failed on their goal to get the Holy Land and left religious hatred. This was negative because Muslims and Christians hate each other and for that they kill each other.

The crusades were a bunch of wars in the Middle Ages when the Christians and Europeans tried to retake control of Jerusalem from the Muslims. Jerusalem was important to Muslims during the Middle Ages because it was believed to be where Muhammad ascended to heaven. The Christians found it important because it was believed to be where Jesus Christ was crucified and rose again.

L. The main reason the crusades started was to take Jerusalem from the Turks. Before 1087, Christian pilgrims frequently traveled to Jerusalem, “the holy land”. However, according to document 6, “from 1087 onwards, turks stopped christian pilgrims from entering Jerusalem.” Basically, the Turks claimed Jerusalem as their own, and prevented any pilgrimages. Pope Urban II was not happy about this. He called European Christians to war in 1095 to recapture Jerusalem. According to Document 1, he says, “I, or rather, the Lord, beseech you as christ's heralds to publish this everywhere and persuade all people of whatever rank, foot-soldiers and knights, poor and rich….to destroy that vile race from the lands of our friends.” Basically, Pope Urban II is urging the people to fight the Turks, and win back Jerusalem.

The Third Crusade took place from 1189-1192. The First Crusade was the Byzantines effort to re-establish the territory they lost to the Seljuk Turks. After three years of fighting, the Christians defeated the enemy. Then, in the year 1147 the Second Crusade began when Muslim forces began attacking the Christians. The Christians were defeated, leading to the Third Crusade. The Third Crusade was King Richard’s attempt to recover the Holy Land from the great Muslim leader Saladin. Saladin was a ruthless military leader, but was seen as generous and humane by his followers. He was very powerful, and had made many significant accomplishments for his military. The Crusades which means “Going to The Cross” were joined series of religious and political events performed by thousands of Christian. Their mission statement was to free Jerusalem, the Holy Land, from Muslim which took place between the years 1096 through 1270. This mission failed because the Christians took the wrong approached which included violent instead of trying to win the hearts and mind of the people. They had the right mindset but was unable to execute the plan successfully.

This crusade would grant remission of sin to those who undertook the crusade. The Crusaders took over many of the cities on the Mediterranean coast and built a large number of fortified castles across the Holy Land to protect their newly established territories. The Holy Land surrounds Jerusalem and, to this day, contains sacred sites to Christians, Jews, and Muslims ("Crusades"). These sacred sites were very important to people of these religions and many pilgrimages occurred there ("Crusades"). During the eleventh century, Muslims acquired the Holy Land and expanded their empire ("Crusades"). This prompted Alexius Comnenus, the Byztantine emperor, to write to Pope Urban II in need of trying to reacquire this sacred land ("The Crusades"). This prompted the start of the Crusades. There were four major Crusades and several others that occurred ("Crusades"). The first was probably the most significant out of all of them. The First Crusade allowed for the capture of The Holy Land and also prompted an influence of Middle Eastern culture and ideas to Western Europe.

In 1095, Pope Urban II called for an army to go to the Holy Land, Jerusalem. This was what was later known as the ‘First Crusade’. A crusade is a religious war or a war mainly motivated by religion. The first crusade consisted of 10’s of thousands of European Christians on a medieval military expedition to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims. This doesn’t mean that the first crusade was just motivated by religion. Throughout this essay, I will be suggesting the main reasons of why people went on crusades and which different people went for specific reasons and why.

The reason that the First Crusade happened was because they were trying to capture Jerusalem from the Muslims. They didn’t want the Muslims to have Jerusalem because it belonged to the Christians. The First Crusade was a major event that happened and it still talked about today. Jerusalem was captured by the Muslims, Christians were mad about this when they found out. Many people also volunteered to fight on the First Crusade.

There were many other small crusades throughout this period, which continued into the 16th century, until the Renaissance and Reformation when political and religious climate of Europe was drastically different than that of the middle ages (CBN). The most successful of the rebellion was that of the First Crusade. After taking Nicea, the Anatolian capital of the Seljuks, the Crusaders captured Antoich in Syria and Jerusalem in 1099 (history bits).
