A friend Elbert Hubbard once said, “A friend is someone who knows everything about you and still loves you.” Markus Zusak's book “The Book Thief” follows Liesel, who moves with her foster family, meets Rudy and navigates their world before and during World War II. By far, Rudy represents the best friend we all need; even though they can be annoying at times, they will always be there for you, no matter the circumstances. Markus Zusak uses the following literary devices to convey this message: stages of the journey and theme. Rudy represents the embodiment of love, as he follows Liesel because he loves her and her traits. His journey through the world is met with love as he goes with an innocent mindset. Rudy’s character is a teaching moment for …show more content…
Rudy, however, despises this realization and continues with his playful character. Finally, as Rudy’s and Liesel’s friendship develops, readers notice how Rudy is a playful character. Rudy is playful, as shown when he teases other people, such as the man whistling. This influenced Liesel: “On this occasion, Liesel followed Rudy’s taunt almost as a reflex action” (Zusak, Chapter ‘The Kiss’, pg. 53. The aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid afor This shows how his playful influence gave Liesel the chance to get out of her shell when she first moved. She slowly gets out of the chaos stage of her life. Before, she focused more on denying her brother’s death, but now, with Rudy, she is a child. This is the connection where children slowly develop themselves with the influence of their friends or family. They copy their actions and decide for themselves whether they like to continue or not and become themselves. In conclusion, Rudy is portrayed as the childhood friend we need through the themes and stages of the journey. Rudy’s character can also be seen in “To Kill a Mockingbird” with
Back in the 1960s a house would cost about $12,400. A couple of weeks after Rudy saying no to buying a house his girlfriend broke up with him. When Rudy's football season at Highschool was over he got to give one last tackle and it was on his coach. Not only was that one of his favorite tackles it was one to remember. Before Rudy went to college one of his friends that believed he would make it to Notre Dame got in an accident in front of his eyes. In the power plant that he worked in had a mess up and his friend didn't make it. Although there were good and bad parts that he went through in his high school life it gets even better in
Rudy’s voice is direct and reveals his character. For example: “Look, I’m trying to get rid of this kid.” At first it’s odd that he calls men and women “babe.” Then we learn he does it to avoid closeness. His habit of barking “today,” shows he’s impatient with people.
Rudy’s perception of himself changed over the course because when he used to live in Hawaii and he used to always skip school. For example he would also run around naked get drunk and smoke weed with his friends in Kahaluu. In the book it clearly states “ every one of my highschool teachers would tell you i was hardly the next einstein “ that means to me that his teachers thought he wasn’t the smartest kid out there. The book also states “ i would party and get drunk with the townies on the weekends and go diving with my kahaluu friends on the weekdays “. I can relate to Rudy’s life because when the waves are big and the swells come in i always skip school just to go surf. In conclusion i think Rudy changed because he wanted to live a better
In The Book Thief, Rudy’s innocence is best represented through his idolization of the runner, Jesse Owens. This innocence was taken away following the conversation his dad had with him. It was
Liesel and Rudy’s young age did not prevent them from realizing they should try to take action against unfairness. Against harsh circumstances, the characters in The Book Thief selflessly aided the Jewish people, synonymous to the brave Germans in real life that disagreed with Nazi ideas during the Jewish
Using the Structural functional approach one can see that Rudy completely defied all of the set functions of his family. The families policies would have been for Rudy to finish high school, work in the factory and then settle down. However Rudy broke this norm and caused a lot of conflict in his family due to his decisions. I feel that this is the best approach for this movie. because the story relies so heavily on the structure and guidelines set by the
The movie relates to one of Rudy's habits of being proactive. Rudy has many steps to be proactive to achieve his goal, but one specific example is Rudy getting a tutor to get good grades. Rudy getting a tutor is being proactive because he is trying to get good grades so he can get into Notre Dame. This is showing he is doing something beneficial to achieving what he wants. Another example of proactive behavior in the movie is when Rudy gets a job as a field maintenance worker at Notre Dame to expand his passion and want to eventually be a player on the field instead of a worker.
His determination and loyalty make him very likeable, but also troublesome. His determination can be seen when he desperately wants to show Franz??? that he is capable of being successful, ‘In the middle of August, a Hitler Youth carnival was being held, and Rudy was intent on winning four events: the 1500, 400, 200, and of course, the 100.’ (Zucker ...), he was so intent that he actually won three out of the four events. However, this determination leads to the Nazis coming to recruit Rudy for a special school, causing his parents to decide to enrol Alex Steiner, Rudy's father.
The second aspect that was noticed bout Rudy was the dedication that he kept consistent. No matter how hard times may have seemed to Rudy, he was too stubborn to give up. He didn't have the grades to attend Norte Dame, so what did he do? He walked into a small catholic school and applied there. He did this to earn credit and to eligible for the fall semester at Norte Dame. That fall semester Rudy got into the school of his dreams and immediately became a hitting dummy for the Football team. Kenneth Turan wrote a review on the movie and he states "It meant a lot for Rudy to play football for Norte Dame, his obsessed determination begins to look more inspirational as the movie goes on" (1).
Once they know more about each other and experience more with each other they begin to grow into a stronger relationship. Rudy does just about anything thing for Liesel, for example when he jumped in the river to get her book and once ergot out he said, "How about a kiss,
rudy wants to be the best athlete like jesse owens, Liesel is dealing with the loss of her mother and her whole world changing because of a mad tyrant hell bent on eradicating the jews, this is mainly seen towards the end of the novel when we see jews being marched toward the death camps in nazi germany, one of the je he was hiding in the the Hubbermans house, Max. Max and Liesel became close while he was in hiding; Liesel being around Max made her more mature because she realized that someone was going through the same problems as her dealing with the loss of family, losing their home and having to relocate, but also it gave Liesel someone to find comfort in other than papa( Hans Hubberman). Rudy had his own problems that he had to deal with; he didn't want to be apart of the Nazi party, particularly because he took favor in being a black athlete, but as the war goes on Rudy must start coming to the realization that his dream isn't possible; Rudy also experiences the hardships of the war which basically destroy his childhood innocence, and forces him to mature, but besides all of that Rudy dealt with bullying and problems at
Also, the race is revelatory to the characters because Rudy wants to show his affection and kiss Liesel. Liesel thinks her and Rudy are only friends while Rudy will be devoted to attract her in for a kiss.
It may seem as if Rudy is the complete opposite of Liesel but it is noticeable Rudy’s personalities rub off on Liesel. At the beginning Liesel was a quiet and scared child, but Rudy showed her that it was ok to speak her mind. An example of this was when Liesel snapped at the mayor’s wife Ilsa Hermann “so you give me the book”..”for pity-to make yourself feel better…”(Zusak 268). After the incident Liesel realized what she had done, but before meeting Rudy she would of never said a thing she would of taken the book and walked away with a simple thank
It may be Rudy’s new found athletic abilities and how well he gets along in his new unit that will later bring the Nazi’s knocking on his door. Will this mean the end for Rudy? Death gave some foreshadow to Rudy’s demise at the point in time when the young man was standing in the freezing cold river.
There are many things that the movie Rudy or Rudy's story is very inspiring in many ways. First Quality that Rudy had was, never giving up on anything. Rudy having a big dream from when he was younger that he wants to complete and to make his dream come true. I can relate to Rudy because I want to complete and be successful in my dream at being a leader or to be a aerospace engineer or continuing Karate and earning my Black Belt. Next Quality that Rudy expresses is, Rudy's Commitment to get work done.
