The story of Beowulf is an epic tale of a heroic great named Beowulf from Sweden. There are many important characteristics that make someone a hero. Beowulf is a hero because of the accomplishments he completed during his time in Denmark. One of the great accomplishments that beowulf is most famous for is killing the evil monster Grendel and Grendel’s mother. This task can only be completed by a true hero. Someone who is braver than anyone. In the story beowulf says “He has done his worst but the wound will end him. He is hasped and hooped and hirpling with pain,limping and looped in it. Like a man outlawed.for wickedness, he must await.the mighty judgement of God in majesty.”(lines 974-78). This is what Beowulf speaks after he kills the evil Grendel. …show more content…

In the story Beowulf speaks "I have heard moreover that the monster scorns in his reckless way to use weapons; therefore, to heighten Hygelac's fame and gladden his heart, I hereby renounce sword and the shelter of the broad shield, the heavy war-board: hand-to-hand is how it will be, a life-and-death fight with the fiend." Beowulf is considered a hero in many ways because he goes through many problems and overcomes many of them. Beowulf puts his life on the line countless times to protect the lives of others and doesn’t really get a reward for it. He is what many believe any kind of warrior or great leader should strive to be. Beowulf should be considered a hero because he stood and faced all his odds head on, puts his life on the line to protect his people, and he displays selfless service for his people. Even though he boasts often he can back it up.

Beowulf is the prince of the geats, and he is called upon to fight a monster named “Grendel” who has been attacking for 12 years. Grendel attacks out of jealousy, anger, and hatred. If you don´t stand for something, how can anyone respect what you do? Most people would rather be recognized by winning that for taking a stand for something they truly believe in. As we saw in the movie, Beowulf lied just to be considered a hero, he only cared about winning, and he didn´t have any ideals or values to stand up for.
In the Anglo-Saxon time period there are certains values you should have to be considered a hero. Although this is defined as “a person who is admired for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities”, in this epic poem Beowulf held these qualities in the great life he lived. Beowulf was the first epic poem written in the English language. For example, Beowulf demonstrates that he is on “a quest” by when Beowulf heard about the terror that Grendel was causing to Hrothgar and sailed the sea to come to the rescue.
There are many great epic poems. They are all different but alike at the same time. Beowulf, which is one of the best, tells a story like no other. He is not just a honorable hero, he is also a man with respect. Getting deeper into this poem, realizing that from all of his encounters with different creatures he fought them equally. Beowulf had always been known as an intrepid hero in the city of New York. He had previously portrayed himself as fierce and poised in his battles against the fiends of the city. He prided himself in protecting the people of NYC and saving their tall skyscrapers many times. His performances fighting against the villains of the city were always showstoppers and the citizens loved taking photos and videos of him. He fought the frightful foes fearlessly. The city had never fallen into the wrong hands with Beowulf watching over it. He was known to be the “silver fox” of individuals and had fought the mightiest of enemies. However, there was one villain that Beowulf had longed to fight since the first day he became a hero.
He demonstrates his strength most frequently throughout the story. He is said to fight with the strength of thirty men and defeats a monster who also has the strength of thirty men in hand-to-hand combat by ripping his arm completely off. Beowulf also shows great strength in the battle with Grendel’s mother. In this battle, he holds his breath for hours and then kills the monster by lifting and swinging a sword made for giants which no ordinary man could lift. When he comes back from that fight, he carries Grendel’s head and the giant sword hilt from the depths of the lake to its surface, where it takes eight of his men to carry that very same head.

In the book Beowulf, there is a hero and a monster. Each one has its own characteristics, and each one can be compared to something real life. Someone could literally make their own “epic” or story based off of heroic and monstrous characteristics of their everyday life. With this being said, the epic Beowulf, which has no author, is about a Scandinavian warrior saving people from a man killing monster, Grendel. One is a hero, and the other a monster, each one containing traits that could be someone or something you know.
“A hero can go anywhere, challenge anyone, as long as he has the nerve.” (Riordan). Beowulf chooses to embrace his fate and boasts that he is the only man who can kill Grendel. He travels to the land of the Danes. His Anglo Saxon society believes in fate rather than immortality. Beowulf wants to achieve immortality through his actions. When comparing these qualities to Beowulf, it becomes evident that Emerson would see Beowulf as a hero.
Christopher Reeve once said “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endures in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” In other words, a hero is a normal person who is able to be strong and persevere despite difficult obstacles preventing them. In the book, Beowulf, the the nephew of the king of the land of the geats, helps Hrothgar, another king, kill a series of monsters that threaten his kingdom. He helps Hrothgar kill Grendel, Grendel’s Mother, and The Firedrake. Beowulf is a hero because he is just an ordinary person who finds the strength to persevere and endure despite the overwhelming obstacles preventing him from doing so. Beowulf embodies Christopher Reeve’s definition of a hero because he defeated the flesh-eating Grendel, who could not be stopped even by groups of elite soldiers. Beowulf also killed Grendel’s mother, a much eviler being who lived in a cave in an endless pool of blood that led to hell.
