Beowulf had always been known as an intrepid hero in the city of New York. He had previously portrayed himself as fierce and poised in his battles against the fiends of the city. He prided himself in protecting the people of NYC and saving their tall skyscrapers many times. His performances fighting against the villains of the city were always showstoppers and the citizens loved taking photos and videos of him. He fought the frightful foes fearlessly. The city had never fallen into the wrong hands with Beowulf watching over it. He was known to be the “silver fox” of individuals and had fought the mightiest of enemies. However, there was one villain that Beowulf had longed to fight since the first day he became a hero.

Christopher Reeve once said, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to preserve and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Hero’s are around us in our everyday lives such as firefighters who put their lives on the line to protect people and their property. Other hero’s can be found in literature. These hero’s, also know as an epic hero, exhibit superhuman qualities to help fight and protect others while on their quest. Being a hero means taking on enormous responsibilities. With these responsibilities comes great praise from others which both Beowulf and everyday firefighter receive for their extraordinary work.
Beowulf; a man whose greatness begun when he saved an entire kingdom from the clutches of the vile monster Grendel. Beowulf was known for countlessly putting his body and his life on the line to save his people. His courage and determination is what kept his legacy alive for all of these years. Not only that, but the respect he had for the people around him made him a remembered warrior as well. That’s what I think makes a hero. Being determined to get a job done, having the courage to step in and complete that job, and having enough respect for your people to still obey their wishes despite your apparent fame. The hero I will be writing about is the fictional Marvel Comics character known as the Black Panther (real name T’Challa). He and Beowulf
Beowulf should be considered a hero because he killed 2 monster and later on as king of the Danes he killed a dragon.
What makes a character a hero? What makes a character a monster? A character that is a hero, would be described as an individual who stands up for what they believe in. These individuals would have characteristics, such as determination, dedication, confidence, charismatic, and bravery. On the other hand, a character would be described as a monster, if the individual is cruel and demands actions that would give themselves pleasure. An example of a monster would be if an individual order, other individuals to kill someone for the "monster's" own pleasure. While reading the Beowulf, I feel Beowulf would be considered a hero instead of a monster because how each of the battles took place. Beowulf and his crew members faced three battles. During
Hero: person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities (Webster’s Dictionary). Not everyone has the same definition of a hero - while some may see one person as a hero, others may not. In "Heroism", Ralph Waldo Emerson writes of qualities that he believes makes someone heroic. When comparing these qualities to Beowulf, it becomes evident that Emerson would see Beowulf as a hero.
Brave, strong, legendary, these are words that come into mind when we think of a hero, but what are heros? To become a hero you must complete at least 1 extraordinary task, defeating a monster, saving a damsel in distress, earning your police badge. Once you earn your title, half the job is done, now all you have to do is exist. It's been proven that towns with a police force have less crime than towns without one, what dragon wants to wreak havoc in Beowulf's backyard? A Hero's place in society is up on a pedestal, watching over the community, where no one can reach them.
In Beowulf’s time, a hero was a man who was strong and courageous and willing to sacrifice everything he had to protect his people. Nowadays, a hero is a person, man or woman, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Obviously the meaning of a hero has changed throughout the many years. But the question now, is Beowulf truly a hero?
Aristotle had once said that “Men are marked from the moment of birth to rule or be ruled”. (Littrell, “Aristotle”, 2016). Each trait that one must have to be a Hero is in the following: The hero must be of noble birth, the heroes story must arouse fear and empathy to keep the reader interested and entertained by what could happen happen next, the hero must be intelligent so that he may learn from his mistakes, and lastly the hero must be faced with a very serious decision that he must make. All of these traits are what all four of these characters in these books, stories and plays have in order to be a hero.
The first type of hero in history is the Anglo-Saxon hero, where a man goes out of his way to show a fashion of heroism by doing a task that no one else could be able to accomplish. The most iconic Anglo-Saxon hero is Beowulf, the warrior from Norway who was known for facing against creatures and monsters across ancient Europe without fear, including the man-eating giant Grendel, Grendel’s witch mother, and a dragon. The five qualities Beowulf shows defining his heroism throughout his tale are strength, immortality, respectfulness, bravery, and humility. The first and most iconic task of Beowulf’s character was his brute strength. Beowulf was strong enough to fight off the brute powers of Grendel and resist the drowning attempts caused by Grendel’s
In the poem “Beowulf”, translated by Kevin Crossley-Holland, the protagonist Beowulf is the hero. Many people have the concept that a hero is someone who defeat evil, can stand up to the impossible, and never give up no matter how difficult the situation is to overcome. This character is the hero because he saves an entire kingdom from fall into the hands of a terrible monster. He did not back down when the mother of the monster try to kill him. When other men fall, he persevere and use his skills and experience to think of different ways to defeat Grendel. Beowulf is shown to be a hero because of his abilities to win every fight against evil. The reader can tell that Beowulf is a hero because the poem is all about him. The poem glorify
Heroes give people within a community a hope in a greater future due to their strength in areas that many others lack. This hope provides solace for the hero’s supporters, that have no other person to look toward. These “Heroes” can come in many different forms in the minds of many. But all in all, Heroes are needed within a society because they give their supporters this comfort, the power to overcome certain hardships, and the knowledge they need to overcome other circumstances whether similar or not.
In a time when the Danish king, Hrothgar, and his people were frantic with fear; a man, Beowulf, hearing of this, comes to the Danes rescue becoming the hero they were hoping for. His courage and determination, brings comfort to the Danes. A hero is someone who puts others before themselves; it is someone who will risk everything, even their lives, for the common good. Beowulf fits the profile perfectly because he voluntarily risked his life for the Danes. He not only killed Grendal, but he killed Grendal’s mother and the dragon. These acts proved Beowulf’s heroism, making him fit into the category of being an epic hero. In the epic poem Beowulf, Beowulf possesses the characteristics of a hero through how he is portrayed, through his devotion
Nothing brings more honor and pride to someone than knowing that they are considered and looked up to as a hero. In the time of the Anglo-Saxton it took deep rooted qualities to be put to the match and titled for true heroship. In the epic poem of the Anglo-Saxton warrior, Beowulf, a young kingsman is put to the ultimate test of bravery. When the Danes of his kingdom are in danger from the swamp demon Grendel, Beowulf gathers a group of his men to sail to Denmark in hopes to slay the wicked demon. Through these battles Beowulf displays acts of willingness and determination, his dedication, and loyalty to be admired as a true hero.
Beowulf, an epic poem that has captured everyone's attention since the 8th century until now. What do you think a real hero should have, superpowers? Not all heroes can fly or have invisibility powers. A hero can be anyone that is brave enough to confront evil. The famous poem ¨Beowulf¨ is a great example of the characteristics a real hero should have. Beowulf fights against giant beasts to protect the Deans from getting murdered , along with taking money from a furious dragon to leave it as heritage for the Geats. In every battle he clearly demonstrates that he is a real hero.
