According to Monahan (2014) privilege does not require that a person actively do anything. Rather the only requirement is that they occupy a certain class or group within a system of oppression. In evaluating the the concept of oppression we see that it is a lack of power and unjust treatment (Monahan, 2014). Taking a closer look at how our current society has been shaped, it is very easy to see how the concept of white privilege expands into multiple areas. Our society has been predominately created by Heterosexual Christian Euro American males. This lack of diversity has created a divide in classes that reaches further than just White Privilege. For example if you look at gender, most people will agree that woman and men are treated differently. …show more content…
The term “girl” is even used derogatory, for example, when a young boy does not do well at sports, you may hear something like “you throw like a girl” suggesting there is something wrong with being a female. Religion has also played a part in perpetuating the rules about gender (Mulvaney, 1994). In religious text woman are often in a subservient role placing the male in a more dominant role. While society has come along way since the feminist movement, woman still face a great deal of sexism and gender bias on a regular basis (Sue & Sue, 2013). We can see from just this one example that privilege reachers much farther then just White Privilege, males tend to have different privileges and control then woman do. In terms of class privilege it is not hard to see that people with money have access to things people with less money are not afforded. For example people with higher socioeconomic status have better healthcare and education afford to them. This is especially true of immigrants and minorities in our country(Blewett, Johnson,& Mach,
Whit privilege is still a problem in America. Through history, white privilege has been a major civil conflict in American societies. It is still prevalent today. What most people want to know is if there is a way to prevent the continuation of white privilege. By knowing the history, and the various types of white privilege, there might be a way to overcome and eventually prevent it.
Shannon Sullivan reveals what white privilege looks like from someone who deals with it on a daily basis, a white woman. Sullivan discusses how white privilege in this day and age can be an invisible and sometimes unquestioned norm in our lives in America. Sullivan speaks up about her own race and the ways it has affected her life. The book discusses the delicate effects white supremacy has had on America. Sullivan also prompts white people to start standing up to the podium and discussing the issues they see when it comes to race. In Sullivan’s writing, she states how white privilege is not discussed much amongst white people and that she wants them to own up to their privilege and to go against the norms of their environments that allow these activities to happen.
Along with racism’s effect on the economic status of communities, it also impacts African Americans in other aspects of the financial realm. As Peggy McIntosh explains in her essay, “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Backpack,” she, as a white person, “can count on [her] skin color not to work against the appearance of financial reliability” (McIntosh). Thus, institutionalized racism still makes it more difficult for Blacks to become financially stable compared to whites. According the Pew Research Center, the net worth of a white person was 13 times greater than that of a Black person in 2013, even though slavery had been abolished nearby 150 years prior (Fry, Kochlar). Likewise, in 1970 about 4 percent of whites and 62 percent of Blacks
In the online article Explaining White Privilege to a Broke White Person by Gina Crosley-Corcoran she argues with Mcintosh's understanding of the way privilege is perceived in her perspective. Mcintosh states in her article that the white people of her race are granted privileges that people of others “color” are not guaranteed in this world. For example she believes that if you are white, you are likely to have a comfortable living with a great income and family. Therefore Gina responds to her statement in a argumentative manner to prove that her belief is not true by giving a brief summary of her child. As she grew up in world of poverty in her eyes she was limited to many things in life that Mcintosh says are guaranteed for white people.
The social construction of race allows “whiteness” to be regarded as the default race or the normal race. This normalization is apparent when white people ask people of color the quintessential question of “where are you from”. An attitude of alienation and “otherness” is placed on minority groups because, quite frankly, being American means being white. Throughout Peggy McIntosh’s essay, “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”, she discusses the unscathed and unacknowledged effects of white privilege that are rampant in America’s society today. A hierarchical structure revolving around meritocracy is practically entrenched into our society, and those who are at the apex of this structure are able to do a myriad of things at the
White privilege is an apparent part our society, well to me at least. The fact that a white person can kill a black male for simply getting Skittles and Arizona, or selling non taxed cigarettes, or playing loud music, looking threatening and so on without consequences for their consequences is white privilege. White privilege is not having to be followed around a boutique or high class store because of the stereotype of being poor and a criminal. White teenagers can go out at night in large groups without being disturbed. White privilege is an advantage that white people are unaware they have. They can not see that the way in which they live is exclusive to their race. They have special assets that colored people do not. In White Privilege-
Are you privileged , are you only successful because of the color of your skin , was everything in your life handed to you ?
White privilege refers to the benefits that white people gain from society that minority members are not privy to. White privilege is walking around the land of the free and being free. Free of judgement, free of stereotypes and free of danger. When you come across the term “privilege” you instantly think of something being earned. But, if one looks a little further they will see that, this is not the case. In today’s society it is not earned, but given, given to “the man”. An act that happens in everyday life has become a norm to society, in which minorities are suppressed of what we all should have access to. But because of white privilege, the education that the Hispanic boy wants, the director position the female qualifies for or the house
White privilege is the concept that white people such as those in the United States have not only more rights, but more opportunities in their lives that will make them more successful throughout their lives. In the United States you will find that in some job markets whites are more likely to get hired than other minority groups. Also you will find that on average white employees may be paid more on average than their minority colliges.
As an individual with an eclectic variety of European descent, I have experienced white privilege. White privilege, prevalent in Western countries like the United States, is a societal structure that puts those who are non-white at a political and sometimes economic disadvantage. Many who do not face these negative experiences are not made aware of the effects white privilege has on their life, unfortunately. Having grown up in Los Angeles, I naively thought I was well versed in racial injustice. It wasn't until I met my partner, and made a deep connection with an individual whose life is negatively affected by the same privilege that benefits me that I began to understand. By sharing their experiences as a non-white citizen of this country,
The concept of racism has always been seemingly foreign to me. As well, I can sadly remember questioning whether or not white privilege exists. In my ignorance, I questioned this in almost the exact same manner as the guy does to Professor Hunk in Ifemelu’s blog post “What Academics Mean by White Privilege. I even pondered the question the guy asks: “Why must we all talk about race…”(429). This blog offers a beautiful, understandable explanation of what white privilege is to both gift to those who have difficulty expressing the issue with their lighter skinned friends and to educate those who are ignorant to said issues.
The deep but subtly entrenched nature of white privilege into the American social structure is problematic because it creates complications to overcoming this type of racism. The difficulty in detecting white privilege facilitates the denial of the role white privilege plays in affecting an individual’s living experience in America. The reality is that white privilege does make a difference in the opportunities available to certain individuals. However, this difference is not as subtle. The biggest problem white privilege poses, aside from the discrimination and bias it employs, is that it is difficult to identify. Due to its intrinsic nature, eradicating its effects requires a reconstruction of the white supremacist American social system.
America’s society has been built on racial beliefs. As much as we believe that America is a country of acceptance, freedom, and equality, people of color have been thought of and treated as inferior races. As research continued, scientists believed that other white races like the Europeans, Germans, and Irish, were white people in transition and would eventually meet their high standards. They believed that they could assimilate into American society and become white Americans; however, Asians, blacks, or any other minority was immediately disregarded as ever becoming American. Being white was a ticket to citizenship. In 1790, congress passed an act called the Naturalization Law, which stated that only free white immigrants could become naturalized citizens. Later on in 1870, the law expanded
Many white Americans are living with the fear that they didn't really deserve their success, and that maybe luck and privilege had more to do with it, than brains and hard work. There are numerous reasons for the widespread discrimination at all levels, but the main reason for the existence of discrimination is a privilege to certain groups of people, and widespread social prejudice towards certain groups of people. Differences between people have always existed, but they gain in importance only when are different importance given to certain differences, so it creates privileges. People who are privileged in one society are often not aware of their privilege. It is very easy to be oblivious to the privilege. The problem of discrimination
Oppression is when groups of people are pushed down by societies or those in power. The word comes from the Latin root opprimere, meaning "pressed down”. There are several ways people tend to be oppressed in terms of race, gender, class, sexual preferences, disability and age and so on. A person can deal with numerous forms of oppression, it is an unjust use of power to enforce an unequal relationship and deny another’s rights and values. The oppressor disempowers a person or group, often in order to further empower and/or privilege themselves. Oppression prevents people from freedom and opportunities. Different forms of oppression For example, systematic oppression is wide spread in American society which is towards the black community. It has got a bit better since the late 1960’s however it is still going on. Over a quarter of the black community are in demand of basic needs with poverty rates being the highest out of any race in the country. The black community unfortunately dominates the low income markets which then generates low income
