What was Auschwitz? Auschwitz- Birkenau was the most horrific concentration camps in World War II, it was where the largest number of European Jews were killed in WWII during the Holocaust. Auschwitz was first constructed for Polish political prisoners, who began to arrive in May 1940. The first extermination of prisoners took place in September 1941, and Auschwitz II–Birkenau went on to become a major site to carry out, the Final Solution. Auschwitz II-Birkenau Auschwitz II-Birkenau was the largest for the 40 or more camps and sub camps that made up Auschwitz. In its three year operation it had multi pull uses when the first construction began in October 1941, the idea was for it to be a camp for 125 thousand prisoners of war, it then opened as a part of Auschwitz in March 1942 and was used as another extermination camp of the Jews.
