Horatio Lloyd Gates was born January 1st, 1727 in Essex, England to the house keeper and butler to the Duke of Leeds. Horatio joined the British army at age 22 and fought for 24 years until leaving to Virginia. Horatio Gates left England just after the war was finished and when he had his first son, Robert to which he wanted to move to Virginia and buy a plantation. Horatio later leaves to fight in an army once again but this time its the Revolutionary war and he fights for the Patriot cause.

That is a load of malarkey. Within that person’s lifetime there will be many unusual happenstances that are directly and wholly related to the amount of success they enjoy today. Henry Louis Gates Jr. was a colored man from a small town in West Virginia called Piedmont, Piedmont was filled with many different races of people, this had a large influence on his life growing up. Growing up as a small child in Piedmont, television had a big influence on Gates,it led him to see white people differently, Television also helped to keep gates up with current events. During his childhood he was affected by his mother's intense hatred for white people and was lead to believe that white people were “dirty”. As Gates matured he began to explore the sexual promiscuity rampant in the black community. This culture lead to many instances of turmoil and conflict in his family caused by promiscuity.

Gates illustrates how racism can perpetuate prejudice that aims to take away individual identity and put entire groups of people down. Yet, the fact that Skip was willing to never look Mr. Wilson in the yes again shows that Gates himself was not going to just take the racism any longer, but was willing to fight it in his own unique way.

In 1975 his friend Paul Allen came up to him while Bill was in college and showed him a Popular Mechanics article about a $350 microcomputer, Gates read this article and was convinced that he wanted to be in the computer industry (“Gates, William Henry, III” 1). As a sophomore in college he and Paul Allen made the computer language BASIC compatible to microcomputers, this took much skill and he was the first to do it (Leaders of info 2).
