On January 27, 1848, King Kamehameha created The Mahele to protect Hawaiians from foreigners taking over land. During the Mahele, the ali’i, maka’ainana, and the king had 33% of land but over time, it has changed. The Mahele happened because the foreigners wanted to gain control of the land but King Kamehameha III wanted the Hawaiians to have land, too. Their solution was that they made the Mahele to prevent foreigners from gaining control of the land (Cachola). The Mahele was unjustified because it gave Hawaiians only 1% of land when they should’ve had 33%, the government made the land prices too high, and the maka’ainana barely had any resources ever since the foreigners started to arrive.

The Mahele allowed the foreigners to buy, sell, and own much of Hawaii’s land. This was possible due to a right known as “fee simple,” where foreigners were able to own, sell, and pass down certain regions of Hawaii (Cachola). Since the foreigners were the only people who had owned any money, they were the only people that bought land. When this occurred, it became normal to see a nonnative buying a portion of land, and eventually many foreigners roamed Hawaii. This was beneficial because it gave them places to create homes and more power, as more land meant more strength. The gaining of land also allowed
In Hawaii, changes were going by fast as the population of the foreigners increasing and land being in demand, so because of this, the Great Mahele of 1848 occurred also known as the Great Land Division. King Kamehameha III originally divided the land between three groups, kings, ali’i, and the makaainana. This happened because King Kamehameha III didn't want the foreigners to take the land by force (Borreca). The land later on was divided into even more groups and the foreigners were interested in the land. They would take advantage by starting currency in Hawaii, and because of this, most of the Hawaiians had a hard time or struggled to survive (Cachola). The Great Mahele of 1848 was unjustified because the land was taken away by foreigners,

The Abolishment of the Hawaiian Monarchy In this essay I will discuss the changes that led to the overthrow of Hawaii and that forever changed the Hawaiian way of life. The three historical events that led to the overthrow and drastically changed Hawaii were the introduction to trading, the arrival of the Christian missionaries, and the tax and tariff trade agreements between Hawaii and the United States. Many things happened in Hawaii after King Kamehameha took control of all the islands, but I believe these three were the most important. Each of these events drastically and permanently impacted Hawaii because this changed the way of life for the native Hawaiian.
As the oldest island in Hawaii, Kauai has a wealth of history. Over the years, it has gone from ancient battlefields to a modern economy. First inhabited around 200 to 600 AD, the original settlers most likely reached Kauai from the Marquesas Islands nearly 2,000 miles away. Since these early immigrants arrived, an estimated 1,000 of the 1,300 species on Kauai have gone extinct. Centuries later, the Tahitians arrived and took over the island from the shorter Marquesans.
