At the end of Chapter 1, Ponyboy says “I lie to myself all the time. But I never believe me.” but before that, he stated that he didn’t care that Darry didn’t love him and that Darry thought Ponyboy was a burden and someone that he could yell at. Ponyboy said that he didn’t care about Darry at all but he often lied to himself. What Ponyboy means is that he does care about Darry but he just can’t accept the fact. However, the reason why he does it could be a variety of factors and reasons. It may be because he is too prideful or arrogant to admit it to himself. Perhaps he is just trying to save himself from the pain of unreciprocated feelings that Darry seems to give out. Maybe Ponyboy is trying to get back at Darry by trying to convince himself
In chapter 3, Darry and Ponyboy got into a fight, in which Darry hit Ponyboy. This fight resulted in Ponyboy and Johnny killing a Soc, runnning away, going missing for five days, and getting Ponyboy injured and Johnny dead. The boys returned home when they were rushed to the hospital after being wounded from a fire. Once Ponyboy came to in the hospital, he saw Darry, crying. "Darry didn't like me... he had driven me away that night... he had hit me...he didn't give a hang about me... Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying... Darry did care about me..." (98). Ponyboy ran to Darry, hugged him, and started sobbing. The two brothers stood in the waiting room, hugging and crying together. Daarry never scolded Ponyboy about him running away, because he was focused on Pony's health. He stayed at the hospital that night. Darry loves Pony, and now Pony knew.
Superman Returns “’Don’t you ever use your head?’” These are the words of Darrel Curtis, or Darry, from The Outsiders by S.E Hinton that he repeatedly states in the novel to his youngest brother, Ponyboy. The Outsiders is a realistic fiction novel that includes two main groups, the Greasers and the Socs, who were always getting into brutal fights with each other. The main problems in this novel are stereotyping and finding your identity. Darrel Curtis is the unofficial leader of the Greasers.
In the letter that Johnny left for Ponyboy,“‘There's still a lot of good in the world. Tell Dally. I don’t think he knows’” (179). The note Johnny left for Ponyboy to tell Dally, but it was too late for that. Ponyboy says, “Johnny worshipped the ground Dallas walked on”(25). This shows that Johnny is just Dally’s pet. Johnny knows that Dally cares about him but he does not show it because is a tough person. All in all, Both characters care for each other.
Ponyboy wasn't in the best shape when he came from Windrixville, because he lost a lot of weight due to only eating candy bars and baloney, but even though Darry thinks he shouldn't participate, he still wants to, as shown in this sentence "I've got to be in it. " His reason for this was because he wanted to help the Greasers beat the Socs in the rumble, and even though he might get hurt because he's not in prime condition, he's still willing to risk it, showing not only courage, but a large amount of grit. Finally, when Ponyboy writes an essay about his life for an English assignment. The moment Ponyboy puts his pen to the paper, he realizes that "someone should tell their side of the story" as shown on page 179.
Lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. I was so bored that I was going to meet up with the gang when i heard yelling from the other room. “ Johnny get in here and clean this room! It’s a mess and I ain’t gonna raise messy children.”, said Dad. I knew i hadn’t made that mess. They got drunk and threw a lot of things everywhere. But, my parents just don’t like me much and I’m used to that. After I finished cleaning the room. I immediately went into the kitchen. They don’t care about me at all. They wouldn’t even care if I died. It was a late afternoon and I was starting to get hungry. I looked in the fridge for something to eat. There wasn’t much. Just baked beans, a loaf of bread and ham. I decided I would have a ham sandwich.
Hey there Ponyboy, and Johnny, the things you guys did was AWESOME, but there’s a few things you did wrong, like stabbing a Social, ran away from the cop, but hey look at the bright side. You guys recused people from the burning church, and got each other back like it was family, but the things you did wrong was to run away from the cops, and your family. As a result people get killed, leaving everyone else behind, and as a result it’s pretty wrong to leave your family without saying goodbye, or even sending letters back.
Why does Darry care about Ponyboy. Maybe to make sure he doesn’t have the life that Darry had. He shows this by checking Pony’s grades and makes sure he does his homework right, or he protects Pony. Another way is that he works 2 jobs just so that he can go to school.
Dally appears as intriguing to Ponyboy, and Pony likes to be inspired by him. However, he is not the best behaved one of them all; he has committed robberies and other various crimes.
First, when Darry slapped Pony, he felt so sad and worthless because he felt like Darry didn’t want him at home anymore. Darry and Pony don’t get along to well in the beginning of the book, but throughout their conflicts, they learn that they love each other very much. Another example is when Pony gets a letter from Soda when he was running away. Soda said that they miss Johnny and Pony very much and wish they would come home. Pony gets very emotional and sad because he misses them so much. Pony and Soda realize that they need each other. They love each other and couldn’t imagine life without them. Pony tells Johnny that they need to go home and turn themselves in for killing a Bob. Pony and Johnny did not want to do this, but it was the right thing. On the other hand, when Darry and Soda were protecting Pony from the fight with the Soc’s he knows that they will never hurt or fight with one another again.
Early on, Pony thinks that Darry doesn’t cares very much about him and would do anything to keep them apart from each other. While walking back home after the movie that pony watched with Cherry Valance, she asked how Darry was compared to Soda. Pony answered, “Darry. . . what was Darry like? ‘He’s. . .’ I started to say he was a good ol’ guy but I couldn’t. I burst out bitterly: ‘He’s not like Sodapop at all and he sure ain’t like me. He’s hard as a rock and about as human. He got eyes exactly like frozen ice. He likes Soda -- but he can’t stand me. I bet he wishes he could stick me in a home somewhere, and he’d do it, too, if Soda’d let him.” (Hinton 42). This demonstrates Pony’s opinion because Pony see's Darry getting along with Soda, Pony believes Darry has the capacity for love, but he just doesn’t have it for Pony. Pony forms his initial opinion because he is very naive. When Darry pushes Pony to get very good grades, Pony believes it is because he wants to be controlling. Originally Pony believes that darry is a horrible guardian but later on in the book he sees the other side of Darry. After Darry and Pony finally got to see each other after Pony ran away, he saw Darry crying while giving him a hug,“Suddenly I realized, horrified, that darry was crying...In that second what Soda and Dally and Two-Bit had been trying to tell me came through. Darry did care about me. Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me.” (Hinton 98). While giving Darry that hug, Pony realized something he never thought would come from darry, Pony saw him crying. For the first time, Pony saw that Darry does everything that he possibly can to help Pony get a better future then what he experienced. Darry tries to give Pony what he missed out on and Pony finally realized is it. This change in opinion for Pony
It is apparent throughout the movie that Ponyboy struggles with his identity. After his parents had passed away, his older brother, Darrel, became the parental figure for Ponyboy and his other brother, Sodapop. Ponyboy had felt that Darrel didn’t like him anymore and feels that Darrel blames
Secondly, Ponyboy did not get sick, resulting no conversation or any connection with Ponyboy and Darry. In the book, the conversation helped Ponyboy and Darry get closer, and helped form a better relationship between the two brothers. The film included Ponyboy being sick, but not to the point where Darry was worried sick and wanted to talk to Pony. The cutting of this moment was not needed, because from the movie's point of view, it shows that Darry and Ponyboy have no bonding moments, but in the book Ponyboy and Darry have this kind of brother relationship without
At the end of the book Ponyboy finally comes to terms with the deaths of Johnny and Dally, and he finally realizes that violence is not the answer when he makes up with Darry. Darry and Ponyboy are shouting at each other, and Ponyboy asks Sodapop to take his side. This causes Sodapop to rush out of the house, and Ponyboy and Darry chase after him. When they finally catch up Sodapop tells them he feels sick of being pulled apart by their fights. Ponyboy sympathizes with Sodapop as he says in the text: “Darry and I did play tug of war with him, with never a thought to how much it was hurting him.” Ponyboy suddenly understands what his fighting with Darry has done to Sodapop, and later in their conversation Ponyboy realizes why he never got along with Darry: “I saw that I had expected Darry to do all the understanding without even trying to
Ponyboy and his family show a family loyalty that is constantly being tested. During the book there are moments where we can see the flashes of loyalty. However there are other moments where there is none for each other or themselves. Darry has a ton of loyalty by not going to
Ponyboy doesn’t feel loved by Darry because he slapped him and Darry doesn’t treat Ponyboy like he treats Sodapop. Darry treats Ponyboy with a tough love because he wants Ponyboy to succeed and not be a dropout like Sodapop. Ponyboy came home at 2 in the morning and the greasers were really getting worried. Darry thought it was all excuses and slapped him this is conflict because Ponyboy doesn't feel loved by Darry. “Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me back against the door.”(pg- 50, S.E Hinton) Ponyboy has never been hit by darry nor has Darry ever hit Ponyboy so it was all just a very big shock to the boys that it took a little while for them to process what really happened. This is a conflict because Ponyboy doesn’t like being hit or for it to make him feel like darry doesn’t like him. Ponyboy is like the baby of the family and the soiled one and doesn’t have to do all the things the older boys have
