"The American is a new man, who acts upon new principles; he must entertain new ideas, and form new opinions." An American is someone who has the control to be able to make their own decisions and act upon what they want, and what they believe. The American in my opinion, is someone who has their rights, and follows laws but still has a freedom of choice.
First of all, we have the privilege of being able to have rights. Our rights are our basic Amercian freedoms. Without our rights we wouldn't be the people we are. Our rights are what protects the things about us that make us who we are, and protect us as citizens. As an example, we have the Freedom of speech (Amendment I). Without this amendment we wouldn't be able to truly express how we feel. Having this right is such an important thing to each and everyone of us, because not only is it a way of expression, but a way of showing who you truly are. Could you imagine what it would be like if you couldn't speak your mind? Nobody would know how you feel.
Second, not everyone decides to make the right choice and do the right thing. This meaning, we are left with having to have laws so that the world is separated from right and wrong. For example, we have what is called "Title Nine". This law is something that we need because not everyone has the same mindset of the fact that we

It means so many things and is different for each person. But to me, what it means to be an American is someone who has the Freedom to express what they feel, to be protected locally, and nationally, and still be able to decide your future. As an American, we have the right to be successful, and that's a very important thing. We take our freedoms, and what we are blessed with for granted by not putting your head in the books, and working hard for what you want. It's one of the many things that makes being an American such an amazing
The soil of the middle-east stained with the blood of our American soldiers just so we can not take advantage of our right to vote. Though sometimes questionable, America's overall image portrayed to other countries is an honorable one. America is known for its democracy and as well as being a land of opportunities and many freedoms. America's assortment of ethnicities and cultures is proof that our country is a desirable one. Wars are being fought at this very moment to defend these freedoms.
The Americans are the pilgrims from the west who have carried a great mass of sciences, arts, industry, and vigor, which began in the east. They were once scattered all over Europe but have been incorporated into one of the best systems of inhabitants in the world. The American is a new person acting upon new principles, forcing him to entertain new ideas and come up with new opinions. He was
Being American Being American can mean a lot of different things. To me being American means that you have your right to do whatever you want and choose what what you want. This is the biggest thing of being American because you’re free to do what you want. This is important because no one can necessarily control you and what you do but instead guide you with laws that protect you.
What does it mean to be an American? In my eyes to be an American means to have privileges, rights, and freedom. America isn't perfect, but it is one of the only countries that have rights given to people of different diversities and gender. America does not have tremendous poverty. Instead we have choices given to us by the people who fought and died for the American people. Without George Washington and the other patriots who planted the first seed in the ground and help plant the American nation we live in now who knows what America would be like now.
What does it mean to be American? Webster’s defines an American as: Of or relating to the United States of America or its people, language, or culture. My definition to be American means that you’re free. Free to say what you want. Free to choose your own religion. Free to vote for whom you want. Free to grow up and pick the occupation you desire. Free to go where you please. Free of being a slave to no one! Free to love whom you want. Most importantly, free to get a good education. Just being free period! As a child, I was taught those things to grow up and realize you’re not as free as they portray us to be.
What it means to be American? Everybody you ask this question to will have a completely different response. Some responses might have similarities but none will be exactly the same. In the beginning of the year my response was “To be an American means having a rich history, having opportunities to better ourselves, and having freedoms.” Unfortunately not everyone has had the same opportunities or freedoms. Native Americans, who are indigenous, dealt with having their freedoms taken away, less opportunities even though they had rich history in this land before it was taken away from them. Look at what Zitkala-Sa endured. Not only that, but African Americans have fought long and hard for freedom and equality as well. W.E.B. Du Bois stood for
Many people dream about being an American. They dream because they envision America as the land of peace and prosperity. But is it? At times it has been, and at times its not. It is hard for the United States to be correct all the time because they have been unwilling designated as the “World Police”. Throughout history there have been examples politically, economically, and socially, where being an American is rewarding and times where it is embarrassing. To be an American means progress. We evolved from a world ruled by white men to a world of equal opportunity.
Being an American it means to respect the freedoms as an American whether you agree or disagree with the choices our country makes. Not everybody agrees with the way our country is run but it's still up to all the American people to respect the law and our freedoms. As an American you have many freedoms that don't restrain you from any religion or group and any color or gender can be an American. You should respect your rights as an American.
What Being an American Means to Me Being an American is associated with many things but I believe it all falls under freedom, opportunity, and acceptance. When you are an american you automatically you get that freedom every American has. The Bill of rights protects Americans freedom. “ Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof ;or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press ; or of the people peacefully to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

Being an American means having a government looking out for you even if it's something you do not want. For example when FDR came up with the New Deal many were upset because most people thoughtthe government was taking over and becoming more communist
Being an American means to have opportunities that are available to us that others don’t get in other parts of the world. The United States of America is a country that is based on being a free country for citizens to have more freedom than anywhere else. It is one of the only countries that give rights to people of different diversities and genders. To be an American means to have opportunities, rights, and freedom.
Since this great country was first established many intuitive minds have tried to answer the question; "What is an American". This country is full of individuals of many backgrounds, and diversities and each person has a different opinion on this question. In my opinion, an American is someone who values freedom and equality and pursues the "American dream." Every American exercises these rights and these are great adjectives to describe our country. Each of the seven readings, and the one image I compiled help mold this broader definition into a more precise description of an American.
According to Generation Zs to be an American means to have freedom and to be able to make choices that will benefit you, your family and your nation. Walt Whitman shares a similar view of being an american in his poem Song Of The Open Road written in 1856.
To be an American, it means that you can be whoever you want. It means that no matter where you come from, you can be who you want to be. It means to have freedom.
