What does it mean to be American?Well it all depends on who you ask, because everyone has their own opinions. Being an American mean has and had many definitions for many centuries. During WW1 being an American was helping server the war or help the war. In WW2 it was the exact same thing. Women in this age thought being American was having the same rights as men. But being American is something that can be broken up into three big categories. One of them having our right and freedoms to do whatever we please, two having a democratic republic, third of all having people of different nationalities coming together. Our freedom in the United States is what makes us who we are. This defines us because we are protected by the Constitution and Bill …show more content…
Johnson). Another way of using some of the amendments is by protesting and petitioning. Many have done this to get the right to vote. This is why having freedoms makes us American because it allows to do and get what what we think is right.Talking about having the right to vote our country allows us to do so, because of our democratic republic. This type of government has three branches to keep us balanced and not have one overpower the others. Our government helps allow us to choose our leaders with like-minded opinions to give a voice for us. It helps us connect to people with the same ideologies to fight for the same reason. Having our government is to help the people it is something we should be proud of because unlike many countries ours is different. Our country is an example to others because our government has worked for many years. Being an American means having a government looking out for you even if it's something you do not want. For example when FDR came up with the New Deal many were upset because most people thoughtthe government was taking over and becoming more communist
The soil of the middle-east stained with the blood of our American soldiers just so we can not take advantage of our right to vote. Though sometimes questionable, America's overall image portrayed to other countries is an honorable one. America is known for its democracy and as well as being a land of opportunities and many freedoms. America's assortment of ethnicities and cultures is proof that our country is a desirable one. Wars are being fought at this very moment to defend these freedoms.
To be an American means many different things. It means to be kind and help others. It means that no matter what we stick together and fight for our country. What really is an American? Being an American is not just being born in the USA as most people would think, that is just the technicality of it. For centuries Americans have defined themselves not by their racial, religious, and ethnic identity but by their common values and belief in individual freedom. Not just being able to say “The Pledge of Allegiance” and being able to vote for the president, but being able to be free and to be proud that you live in the United States of America.
What does it mean to be an American? In my eyes to be an American means to have privileges, rights, and freedom. America isn't perfect, but it is one of the only countries that have rights given to people of different diversities and gender. America does not have tremendous poverty. Instead we have choices given to us by the people who fought and died for the American people. Without George Washington and the other patriots who planted the first seed in the ground and help plant the American nation we live in now who knows what America would be like now.
The first thing that comes to mind about being American is to have freedom. Being an American means to have the right to choose what school I want to go to, to travel around the country without any trouble, and be able to achieve my career and educational goals, without any any pressure from the government or military groups. To be American means that you will not be judged by your religion or ethnicity, and if you are, you have the right to defend yourself. It means being especial because you can be from other ethnicity and still be American that’s what it means to be an American.
What it means to be American is how you contribute to this country. Fighting for equal rights, fighting for America, fighting to be American everyday. To be American you have independence, determination to fight for what you have.To be American is to be proud of my country and defending our rights and our freedom rights.Being American is something we should be proud of we have a lot of freedom. Many people dream about being an American. They dream because they envision America as the land of peace and prosperity. But is it? At times it has been, and at times its not. It is hard for the United States to be correct all the time because they have been unwilling designated as the "World Police". Throughout history there have been examples politically, economically, and socially, where being an American is rewarding and times where it is embarrassing. To be an American means progress. We evolved from a world ruled by white men to a world of equal opportunity.
What does being an american mean to me? Being an american means that I have freedom to do things that I want, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness which the military fights for. Another thing I have is rights that means that I have choices to pick things that I want to do in life like pick a job or do whatever because of the military fighting for are country. I also have justice which means that things are fair and you have a fair trial if I go to court and can not just go to jail.
Do you consider yourself to be an American? Being an American is not just having a citizenship or living in America it is much more. America doesn’t just allow the people inside the country to stay, but America gives everyone a second chance at life and give them more opportunities. Many people tend to classify being American as living in the country called North America. Some people think that being American means to be a person living in a free country. Others may also think that it means to be a person living in a free country, but not having everything come free to you. What does it mean to be American? Webster’s defines an American as: Of or relating to the United States of America or its people, language, or culture. My definition to be American means that you’re free. Free to say what you want. Free to choose your own religion. Free to vote for whom you want. Free to grow up and pick the occupation you desire. Free to go where you please. Free of being a slave to no one! Free to love whom you want. Most importantly, free to get a good education. Just being free period! As a child, I was taught those things to grow up and realize you’re not as free as they portray us to be.
What it means to be American? Everybody you ask this question to will have a completely different response. Some responses might have similarities but none will be exactly the same. In the beginning of the year my response was “To be an American means having a rich history, having opportunities to better ourselves, and having freedoms.” Unfortunately not everyone has had the same opportunities or freedoms. Native Americans, who are indigenous, dealt with having their freedoms taken away, less opportunities even though they had rich history in this land before it was taken away from them. Look at what Zitkala-Sa endured. Not only that, but African Americans have fought long and hard for freedom and equality as well. W.E.B. Du Bois stood for

Being an American means to have opportunities that are available to us that others don’t get in other parts of the world.
